Netflix is not officially available in mainland China. A VPN or other cross-border connection may provide access to a Netflix account, but it can be blocked, detected, slow, legally sensitive and unable to show a complete foreign catalog. For a short visit, downloading shows before departure is the most dependable plan; treat live streaming as a backup experiment rather than a guarantee.
Is Netflix available in China?
Netflix’s official availability list excludes mainland China, although the service operates in more than 190 other countries and regions. See Netflix’s country availability list.
Mainland China should not be treated as interchangeable with Hong Kong or Macau. Their service availability and network conditions can differ, so check the situation for the specific territory you will visit.
A Netflix account does not let you freely change its home country to obtain another library. Netflix says the account country generally changes only when a subscriber moves to a new residence: Netflix account-country guidance.

The China-facing Netflix website and its download messaging do not override the company’s statement that mainland China is an unavailable market.
Decide what you actually need to watch
- Occasional entertainment: download films and episodes before leaving home.
- Your normal home-country catalog: you will need a working international route, and the catalog still may be incomplete.
- Netflix Originals: some are licensed worldwide, but availability can still vary.
- A mainland-China Netflix catalog: Netflix does not offer an official mainland-China catalog.
- Television viewing: plan for device, casting, HDMI and hotel-network limitations rather than assuming a phone VPN covers the TV.
Prepare before entering mainland China
International VPN applications and related services can be difficult to obtain or reach after arrival. Install and test everything while you still have unrestricted access.
- Confirm your Netflix email address and password.
- Update Netflix and the operating system on each intended device.
- Install and activate a paid VPN or other chosen connection outside China.
- Test it on the exact phone, laptop, tablet, streaming device or router you expect to use.
- Save the provider’s support instructions and contact details offline.
- Download films and episodes in the Netflix app.
- Turn on airplane mode and verify that the downloads play without a connection.
- Save any VPN configuration files or manual-setup instructions that could be hard to obtain later.
- Bring a second connection option, such as international roaming, rather than relying on one provider.
- If TV viewing matters, check HDMI output, casting compatibility and whether a travel router is practical for your hotel.
Downloads are tied to the Netflix app and device, not ordinary video files. Leave enough storage for delays and check each title’s download expiry and licensing limits.
Step-by-step: try Netflix through a VPN
1. Subscribe and install before arrival
Choose a provider while outside China. Paid services are generally a better streaming fit than free VPNs because free services commonly impose bandwidth limits, data caps and crowded servers; none is guaranteed to work in China.

2. Connect before opening Netflix
Launch the VPN first and select a server in the country associated with the catalog you want, such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada or Australia. A selected U.S. server does not guarantee the U.S. Netflix library: Netflix uses several location and proxy signals.
3. Check the apparent country
On the same network, open fast.com. Select Show more info and check the country shown beside Client, following Netflix’s VPN and proxy instructions. If it does not match the intended location, the route is not behaving as expected.
4. Open Netflix in diagnostic order
- Open
netflix.comin a browser. - Try the Netflix mobile or desktop app.
- Only then test a smart-TV app or streaming device.
The browser test helps separate an account or regional issue from an app, DNS, device or television problem.
5. Test more than one title
Play a title known to be available in the intended country, then test a Netflix Original. Check playback quality, subtitles, audio and downloads. One successful title does not prove that the full library is available.

Why a VPN may not show the full catalog
Netflix says that when it detects a VPN or proxy, it may show only titles for which it has worldwide rights. VPN use is also unsupported for live events and ad-supported viewing experiences. See Netflix’s explanation of VPN restrictions.
- Regional licensing may exclude the title.
- Netflix may identify the VPN or proxy address.
- The account may be routed through a country different from the selected server.
- Rights may have changed since your last visit.
- Your plan may be ad-supported, or the program may be a live event.
Troubleshooting and recovery
“You seem to be using a VPN or proxy”
Netflix’s official advice is to turn off the VPN, which conflicts with the cross-border route needed in mainland China. If you choose to continue troubleshooting, use this sequence:
- Disconnect and reconnect to another server in the same target country.
- Fully close and reopen Netflix.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Restart the device.
- Test in a browser.
- Disable any second VPN, antivirus VPN, proxy, Smart DNS or corporate tunnel.
- Recheck the client country at
fast.com. - Try hotel Wi-Fi, mobile data or an international-roaming connection.
- Ask the VPN provider for current China-specific instructions.
If the route still fails, stop changing account-country settings and use your downloads or another connection.
Netflix thinks you are in the wrong country
Check the VPN and IP information, reset network settings, restart the modem or router, and contact the internet provider if the location remains wrong. Netflix’s Chinese-language troubleshooting page explains the client-country check: Netflix location troubleshooting.

The app works but the television does not
- App stores and available apps can vary by TV region.
- A phone VPN does not automatically route a television’s traffic.
- Casting can fail when the phone and TV use different network paths.
- Hotel Wi-Fi may block VPN traffic or require a captive-portal login.
- A travel router can centralize routing for several devices but adds setup complexity and may conflict with hotel rules.
- HDMI from a laptop may be more dependable than casting, subject to hotel-TV and device restrictions.
Fallback connections when streaming fails
| Option | Main advantage | Main weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Paid VPN | Can cover multiple Wi-Fi networks and devices when available | May be blocked, detected, slow or unreliable |
| International roaming | May avoid configuring every device | Cost, tethering and routing vary by carrier |
| Travel eSIM | Convenient for phones and some hotspots | May not route tethered or other devices outside mainland China |
| Offline downloads | Most predictable for a short trip | Limited by storage, expiry and pre-trip preparation |
| Hotel or corporate access | May already provide managed international connectivity | Not under your control and may restrict streaming |
International roaming and eSIMs
A foreign roaming plan or travel eSIM may use a different route from mainland broadband, but results depend on the carrier, local agreements, device, tethering support and traffic routing. Treat it as a possible fallback, not a universal firewall bypass.
Corporate and hotel networks
Managed corporate VPNs may be licensed for business use but can impose monitoring, bandwidth and acceptable-use rules. Do not assume an employer’s connection permits personal Netflix streaming.

Assess a service for the features that matter in China rather than global server-count claims:
- Ability to connect from mainland China, recognizing that performance can change suddenly.
- Installation and activation before arrival.
- Support for your operating systems and, if needed, a router.
- Manual configuration instructions and more than one connection mode.
- Support reachable from China, refund terms and pre-departure payment options.
- Simultaneous-device limits, streaming compatibility, privacy policy and logging practices.
- Clear warnings that China access is not guaranteed.

Is using a VPN legal in China?
Do not reduce this question to “VPNs are illegal” or “VPN use is legal for tourists.” China regulates and restricts unauthorized cross-border internet services, while licensed corporate and institutional VPNs exist. Enforcement can be inconsistent and may include warnings, fines or more serious consequences. Background is discussed by the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China and the U.S. International Trade Commission.
Important: This is technical and travel information, not legal advice. Rules can differ for tourists, residents, companies, institutions and Chinese citizens. Follow Chinese law, hotel and network rules, employer policies and Netflix’s terms. Do not use circumvention tools for prohibited activity, and do not infer low enforcement in one city or month means there is no risk. Check current official guidance, including the U.S. State Department China travel advisory.
What to do for different trip lengths
Short holiday or business trip
Download enough content before departure, verify airplane-mode playback, and regard a paid VPN or roaming plan as optional backup connectivity.
Several weeks or a longer stay
Pre-install and test more than one connection method, keep support instructions offline, and retain downloads for outages. Do not depend on a single provider’s current performance.
Recommended Free Tools
Work travel
Keep corporate access separate from personal streaming. Employer infrastructure may have rules, monitoring or technical limits that make Netflix inappropriate.
The Bottom Line
For mainland China in 2026, prepare offline Netflix downloads first. Install and test any VPN or roaming alternative before arrival, expect catalog and connection failures, and treat legal compliance as your responsibility. No VPN provider can guarantee a complete Netflix library or uninterrupted access.
