Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) gathered overlapping photographs, millions of laser measurements, navigation data and 4K video at roughly 3,800 metres (12,500 feet). Processing those observations produced a full-scale digital twin of the wreck as it lies today—not a digitally restored version of the intact 1912 liner.
The distinction matters. The model documents surviving structures, damage, debris and visible textures. Documentary CGI can then use that measured environment to illustrate the collision, breakup and sinking, but those recreated sequences are interpretations rather than scans of events that happened 113 years ago.

The short answer: it was not one new scanner
The project is best understood as underwater reality capture at archaeological scale. Magellan and Atlantic Productions combined:
- ROVs carrying cameras, lights, laser-measurement equipment and navigation sensors;
- hundreds of thousands of overlapping still photographs;
- millions of laser measurements for geometric control;
- positioning and timing in an environment where ordinary GPS cannot work;
- photogrammetric processing to estimate camera positions and 3D shape;
- a dense point cloud registered into a common coordinate system; and
- photographic textures applied to that geometry for broadcast and interactive visualization.
Magellan describes points in the resulting cloud as carrying Cartesian coordinates, a timestamp and texture information. That makes the output more than a conventional photo mosaic: it is a spatial dataset that can be inspected, measured and revisited.

What the 2022 expedition collected
The wreck and its surrounding debris field were surveyed for more than three weeks in 2022 by two ROVs nicknamed Romeo and Juliet. National Geographic reports approximately 715,000 still images, millions of laser measurements, 4K footage and about 16 terabytes of data. The bow and stern are separated by about 2,600 feet.
| Project detail | Published figure and qualification |
|---|---|
| Depth | About 3,800 m (12,500 ft), according to Magellan and National Geographic |
| Survey date | 2022 |
| Duration | More than three weeks, according to National Geographic press material |
| Still images | Approximately 715,000 |
| Other capture | Millions of laser measurements and 4K video |
| Data volume | About 16 TB |
| Later processing | Magellan reports more than 35% better resolution and accuracy in a later processing of the original data; this is not necessarily a new expedition |
At that depth, ROVs avoid sending divers into an environment far beyond ordinary human diving limits. Their tether supplies power and communications from the surface vessel, while the vehicles can follow repeatable paths around fragile, irregular structures. Public sources confirm the survey’s imaging, laser and mapping functions, but do not provide a complete bill of materials or every proprietary algorithm.
How photographs and lasers become a 3D wreck
Overlapping photography
Photogrammetry uses photographs taken from different viewpoints with sufficient overlap. Software identifies common features—such as rivets, fittings, edges and corrosion patterns—then estimates where each camera was and how those observations fit together in three dimensions. The images also supply the model’s visible appearance: texture, color under artificial lighting and fine surface detail.

Laser measurements
Laser observations add geometric constraints and scale. They help establish distances between features and provide a point-based 3D framework onto which image-derived texture can be attached. The finished photographic model therefore should not be described as something created by laser alone; the documented workflow combines laser-derived geometry with image-derived appearance and navigation.
Registration and texturing
Data from many ROV passes must be aligned into one coordinate system. Navigation and timestamps help relate observations collected at different moments, while processing resolves overlaps and rejects inconsistent matches. The result is a dense point cloud, followed by a textured rendering suitable for inspection, documentary graphics or a web viewer.
Underwater conditions make every stage harder. There is no ordinary GPS signal at the wreck; darkness, suspended particles and changing artificial light affect images; repetitive metalwork can create false matches; and the ship is broken, partly buried and full of occluded surfaces. The exact proprietary pipeline is not publicly disclosed, so claims about particular software or sensor models would go beyond the published evidence.
What “digital twin” means in this project
A digital twin is a spatially organized digital representation of a real object or site tied to measured observations rather than imagined geometry. National Geographic calls this a 1:1 digital twin, while Magellan describes a point cloud carrying coordinates, timestamps and texture.

For Titanic, that representation includes the separated bow and stern, deformation and damage, exposed openings, mapped portions of the debris field and objects visible during the survey. “1:1” means full scale. It does not mean the original ship has been restored or that every location has equal resolution.
What the model is not
- It is not a complete model of Titanic as she looked before the sinking.
- It is not a scan of every interior room or every surface hidden by sediment, debris or structure.
- It is not a frame-by-frame record of the 1912 sinking.
- It does not guarantee uniform clarity, color or measurement accuracy across the site.
- It does not replace plans, testimony, expedition records, conservation science or physical evidence.
Lighting, water conditions, camera settings and post-processing can all alter underwater color. Enhanced or colorized views should be read as processed visualizations, not automatically as unaltered photographs of the wreck.
What the model can contribute to Titanic research
The main scientific advantage is a common spatial reference that researchers can inspect repeatedly without immediately returning to the seafloor. It can support comparisons of structural damage, bow and stern orientation, object locations and the relationship between wreck fragments and the debris field. It also creates a baseline against which future deterioration may be measured.
National Geographic says its team identified a steam valve in an open position and presents that observation as support for eyewitness accounts that engineers remained at their posts in Boiler Room 2 after the collision. That is a documentary interpretation attributed to National Geographic, not a conclusion that the scan proves by itself.
Rank #4
A model supplies evidence; historical conclusions still require naval-architecture analysis, materials and corrosion expertise, archival records, testimony and explicit treatment of uncertainty. It can let researchers test whether a proposed breakup or impact sequence is consistent with the physical remains. It cannot independently replay the event.

| On-screen material | What it represents |
|---|---|
| Raw-looking ROV footage | Direct expedition imagery captured at the site |
| Textured 3D wreck | Survey-derived digital twin built from measured data |
| Experts moving through a virtual model | Visualization of the scan for analysis and explanation |
| Iceberg, sinking or breakup sequences | CGI reconstruction informed by evidence, not direct observation |
| Historical photographs and plans | Independent archival sources |
National Geographic’s official photo library labels sinking and iceberg sequences as CGI while crediting other imagery to the Magellan and Atlantic Productions digital twin. The distinction prevents a polished reconstruction from being mistaken for a measurement.
Why image count does not equal uniform resolution
Approximately 715,000 photographs indicate enormous acquisition scale, not identical detail everywhere. Spatial accuracy and texture quality depend on camera distance, lens, overlap, focus, lighting, water clarity and navigation quality. Areas can remain hidden, poorly lit, sediment-covered or missed by the vehicle’s path. A visually impressive rendering may therefore contain gaps, inferred geometry or uneven texture.
Magellan’s later statement of more than 35% better resolution and accuracy refers to reprocessing the original survey data. It should not be read as proof that every part of the wreck improved equally or that a second expedition occurred.

Why the technology matters beyond Titanic
The same integrated method can document fragile shipwrecks and other inaccessible cultural sites, establish repeatable baselines for deterioration, and support offshore inspection or scientific mapping. Its archaeological value is especially important: a digital record can reduce the need for repeated physical visits while preserving spatial relationships that may be lost as corrosion and biological growth continue.
That does not preserve the physical wreck, halt corrosion or resolve ethical questions about displaying personal effects and human remains. Nor does it make the full source dataset public. The roughly 16 TB collection explains why most audiences receive derivative outputs such as broadcast video, compressed imagery or interactive viewers rather than raw, full-resolution files.
Where to watch and explore
National Geographic’s press release announced a U.S. premiere on April 11, 2025, with streaming listed for the following day on Disney+ and Hulu. Availability remains territory-dependent. Disney+ currently lists the program as a 2025 title and displays a 1-hour-9-minute runtime, while National Geographic press material calls it a 90-minute special; runtimes can vary by listing or edition. Check the official Disney+ page.
Magellan’s Titanic TT24 page presents official technical and visualization material. It should not be treated as a promise of access to the original 16 TB dataset.
