To watch a movie or video with friends in VRChat, join a world with a video player, create an instance everyone can enter, and load a supported video URL. VRChat provides the virtual theater and, depending on the world, playback synchronization—it does not provide a built-in catalog of licensed films like Netflix.
What you need
- A VRChat account and the VRChat app.
- A VR headset or desktop mode, plus an internet connection that can stream the video.
- A world with a functioning video player that supports your device.
- A video link the player can load and that you are authorized to watch and share.
- If you are watching together privately, everyone needs to join the same instance.
PC and Android/Quest can resolve supported video links, but that does not mean every world, stream, or video format works on every device. Test the exact world and device before planning a group screening. VRChat added video URL resolving for Quest/Android; individual worlds and codecs can still behave differently.
How to watch a video in VRChat
- Launch VRChat and open Worlds.
- Search for a theater, cinema, home theater, or video-player world. Look for a recent description that says which platforms and sources the player supports.
- Join the world, then open its instance menu and create an instance with an access setting appropriate for your group, such as Invite, Friends, Friends+, or Group. Labels and options can vary by interface.
- Invite your friends and make sure everyone has entered the same instance before starting.
- Find the screen or player controls. Paste a supported video link—an ordinary YouTube watch URL is a useful first test—and choose the world’s Load or equivalent control, then Play.
- Let one person control playback. Depending on the world’s player, that may be the instance master or a designated synchronization owner. Ask late arrivals to wait for synchronization rather than repeatedly loading or seeking the video.
- Adjust the video-player volume and VRChat/world volume separately if needed.
Synchronization depends on the world’s player implementation; it is not guaranteed just because everyone is in the same room.
Finding a suitable theater world
In Worlds, try search terms such as movie theater, cinema, home theater, watch party, TV room, or video player. World names, availability, and player functionality can change, so check the current description and feedback rather than relying on an old list of recommended worlds.

Before inviting a group, check whether the world:
- supports your platform, particularly Quest/Android if you are using a standalone headset;
- identifies the player or supported video sources;
- offers private instances or advises using one;
- has a working player you can test with a short video you are allowed to view.
A polished theater can still have an outdated or incompatible player. Test the actual screen, audio, controls, and synchronization before scheduling a full-length movie.
Which video links work?
VRChat worlds generally provide the screen and player; the video itself comes from an external source. VRChat’s current video URL allowlist includes YouTube (youtube.com and youtu.be), Vimeo, Twitch, Facebook Video, Mixcloud, NicoNico, SoundCloud, Youku, Hyperbeam, VRCDN, Google Video and certain CDN domains, among others. The list can change, and inclusion is not an endorsement or guarantee that every item on a service will play.

For a first try, use a normal YouTube watch link, such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=.... VRChat’s video-player documentation recommends YouTube watch URLs. It notes that Vimeo Basic can use a basic video URL, while Vimeo Pro or Business may use direct video links.
Directly hosted MP4 or WebM files may work if the player, host, and viewer’s device support the URL and encoding. A browser page that contains a video is not necessarily a playable media URL. Login walls, embedded players, redirects, geographic restrictions, and DRM can prevent playback even when the page opens in a browser. Use HTTPS where possible; a shortened or redirected link may fail if the eventual host is not permitted.

Can you watch Netflix, Disney+, or a file on your computer?
Subscription streaming services
Do not expect to paste a Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, or similar service’s webpage into an ordinary VRChat world player. Protected streaming services use their own playback systems; a website URL or embedded player is not the same as a supported video stream. If you want to watch commercial streaming content with others, check whether the service offers an official group-watch option and confirm its current device, account, region, and terms restrictions. VRChat is usually the wrong tool when the film is available only through a DRM-protected subscription app.
Local movie files
A world player generally loads a URL; it does not browse your computer’s hard drive and automatically show a local file to friends. A world creator or host may put a compatible file on an accessible server or CDN and load its URL, but that brings hosting, format, access, and permission considerations. It is not a way around copyright or a service’s restrictions. VRChat’s creator documentation discusses web-optimized video and recommends MP4 fast start for hosted files, using the FFmpeg option -movflags +faststart.

Allow Untrusted URLs and public instances
VRChat restricts video URLs through trusted and allowlisted domains. If a host is not on the allowlist, a viewer may need to enable Allow Untrusted URLs in VRChat settings. Only do this when you understand that the world is asking the client to load content from an external host.
That setting is not a universal fix. Since VRChat’s 2024.4.2 changes, a public instance can refuse an untrusted video domain unless the world creator has allowlisted it. Private instances do not have that same public-instance limitation, though the source must still be compatible and accessible. If a URL works in a private instance but not a public one, the world’s domain policy may be the reason.

Fix common playback problems

Do not assume subtitles, alternate audio tracks, or accessibility controls from the original service will be available in a VRChat player. Test them in advance if they matter to your group.
VRChat or Bigscreen?
VRChat makes sense when the main attraction is spending time together in custom worlds, using avatars and spatial voice chat, and watching a source that the world’s player can lawfully load. It is more flexible as a social environment, but playback quality and controls depend on the particular world and player.
Bigscreen is a dedicated shared-screen and virtual-cinema app and may be a more direct fit if you want a theater or shared desktop experience rather than VRChat’s broader social world. Check its current official listing for supported platforms and features. Neither app should be treated as a way to bypass DRM or a streaming service’s sharing rules. For protected commercial films, an official watch-party feature—if the service currently offers one—or each viewer’s own authorized playback is generally a better route.
Copyright, privacy, and safety
Use content you are entitled to access and share, and check the relevant service terms and applicable law. A private VRChat instance controls who can enter; it does not grant permission to screen a copyrighted film. VRChat’s video-content guidance says users are responsible for obtaining relevant third-party permissions.
Avoid ripping content, bypassing DRM, or entering streaming-service credentials into an unfamiliar world or player. Be cautious with untrusted external URLs, since they direct the client to content outside VRChat’s allowlisted sources.
