Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShort answer: connect your device to a VPN server in the United States, then open Netflix. The VPN routes traffic through a US IP address, so Netflix may treat the connection as US-based. It is not a guaranteed unlock: Netflix can identify VPN addresses, show only globally licensed titles, or block playback entirely.
Netflix also does not support VPNs for its ad-supported experience or live events. If your only goal is one US title, test a refundable or monthly VPN subscription rather than committing to a long plan.
What “American Netflix” means
“American Netflix” means the catalog Netflix makes available when it identifies the viewer as being in the United States. Netflix operates in more than 190 countries, and each country has its own licensed catalog. Shows and films can differ in availability, release timing, audio, subtitles, maturity ratings and downloads. A title described as a Netflix Original is not necessarily identical in every country; regional rights can still affect where and when it appears.
A VPN changes the apparent network location. It does not transfer your Netflix account, billing country or legal residence to the United States.

The simple trick: connect through a US VPN server
- Choose a VPN that offers US servers and supports your device.
- Subscribe and install the provider’s official application from its website or your device’s official app store.
- Sign in to the VPN app.
- Search the server list for United States, USA or a US city, then connect.
- Open Netflix. If the app was already running, close and reopen it first.
- Search for a title known to differ by country, or compare the catalog with a reputable availability database.
A successful connection can produce several outcomes: a US-associated catalog, the same local catalog, only globally licensed titles, a proxy error, or a playback failure. None is guaranteed.
Why a US VPN does not reliably unlock the full catalog
Netflix says VPN users may be shown only titles for which it has worldwide licensing, rather than the catalog associated with the VPN server’s country (Netflix’s VPN guidance). Netflix may also be unable to determine your country when a VPN is active (its location troubleshooting page).
The usual warning is “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy”, identified by Netflix as error E106. Netflix’s supported remedy is to disconnect the VPN and try again; it does not provide an approved way to bypass detection (Netflix error E106 guidance).
Plan restrictions and prerequisites
- An active Netflix membership and a VPN subscription with US servers.
- A supported computer, phone, TV, streaming device or router, plus a stable streaming connection.
- Netflix says VPNs are not supported on its ad-supported experience (Netflix help).
- Netflix says VPNs are not supported for live events (Netflix VPN guidance).
- Provider support varies by operating system, simultaneous connections and router compatibility.
Device-by-device setup
Windows and macOS
Install the provider’s desktop app, sign in, select a US server and connect before opening Netflix in your browser or app. This is usually the simplest setup because the VPN runs directly on the viewing device.
iPhone, iPad and Android
Install the official VPN app, allow its VPN configuration, connect to a US server, then restart Netflix. A VPN changes IP routing but does not necessarily change GPS or other device-location signals.

Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV
Native VPN support depends on the device, operating-system version and provider. Install the provider’s TV app where available, connect to the US location, and restart Netflix. Surfshark, for example, lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV support, but says router or manual configuration may be needed for unsupported hardware (Surfshark device information).
Smart TVs without a VPN app
Use a compatible VPN-configured router, share a VPN connection from another computer, or attach a supported streaming device. Router setup covers more devices but is more technical and routes every device on that network through the VPN unless you create exceptions.
Game consoles
Many consoles do not run standard VPN apps. Router configuration or connection sharing is normally required.

“You seem to be using a VPN or proxy” (E106)
First follow Netflix’s official instruction: disconnect the VPN and retry. If you are testing the unofficial workaround, you can reconnect, choose another US server, restart Netflix, sign out and back in, or restart the device. Also check whether antivirus software has its own VPN enabled and whether the router is applying a VPN you forgot about. These steps may change the result, but they do not defeat Netflix’s detection reliably.
Check which country Netflix sees
- On the same network as the affected device, open fast.com in a browser.
- Wait for the test to finish, then select Show more info.
- Read the country shown beside Client.
This identifies an active VPN or location mismatch; it does not prove Netflix will accept the connection as US-based. Netflix also advises checking whether the connection is using the ISP’s DNS server (Netflix’s connection-location steps).

“This title is not available in your current region”
Netflix says this can occur with an active VPN or when it cannot determine the country. Turn off the VPN, sign out and back in after travel, and refresh the device’s connection (Netflix region-error guidance).
Netflix still shows the local catalog
- The VPN IP may be detected or not recognized as US-based.
- The Netflix app may retain a previous session; restart it or sign out.
- The VPN may be active on a router or another network device, not on the device running Netflix.
- DNS or router settings may expose a location mismatch.
- The title may not be available in the United States either, or its license may have ended.
- An ad-supported plan cannot use VPN viewing according to Netflix.
Poor streaming quality
A VPN adds a network hop. Distance to the US server, congestion and your underlying connection can reduce throughput or increase latency. A nearby US server is often faster than choosing a distant city for its name alone. Netflix’s Open Connect system places delivery infrastructure close to viewers; a distant VPN route can work against that optimization (Netflix Open Connect overview).
Traveling with Netflix without a VPN
If you are simply away from home, Netflix’s official travel behavior may be all you need. The catalog can change to match the country where you are physically located, along with available audio, subtitles, downloads, maturity ratings, My List and Continue Watching (Netflix travel guidance).
For frequent travel or a second home, Netflix recommends connecting from the main viewing location at least once a month and streaming briefly, then repeating the process at the other location (Netflix household travel instructions). Downloads are not a dependable way to carry a US catalog abroad: a downloaded title may be blocked in another country (Netflix download restrictions).
Account country and household rules are separate
A VPN does not change the country attached to your Netflix account. Netflix says the account country cannot be changed unless you actually move; the official process is to cancel, wait for membership to end, and restart while physically present in the new country (account-country guidance; moving-country instructions).

Nor does a VPN authorize account sharing. People outside a Netflix Household generally need their own account or eligible extra-member access, subject to plan, country and billing restrictions (Netflix household rules).

How to choose a VPN for this use
- US server access: Multiple locations provide alternatives, but server count does not prove Netflix compatibility.
- Device coverage: Check support for your TV, streaming stick, console or router.
- Connections and performance: Simultaneous-device limits, speed and latency matter for households and 4K.
- Switching and support: Server changes and device-specific help can be useful when an IP is blocked.
- Privacy and jurisdiction: The VPN becomes another intermediary for your traffic; read its policy.
- Price terms: Compare the upfront charge, billing term, taxes, renewal price and refund window—not only the monthly equivalent.
Vendor claims that a paid plan supports streaming are marketing statements, not a permanent guarantee that every US server will work with Netflix.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surfshark | $2.49/month equivalent; $67.23 billed for the first 27 months, including three extra months; VAT may apply | Unlimited simultaneous connections; broad desktop, mobile and TV support | 30 days | Long commitment; Netflix acceptance is not guaranteed |
| NordVPN | Basic $3.49/month ($94.23 first 27 months); Complete $4.49 ($121.23); Prime $7.49 ($202.23) | 10 simultaneous connections on listed VPN plans | 30 days | Renewal prices may be higher or change |

Is paying for a VPN worthwhile?
| Your situation | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| You also want public-Wi-Fi privacy, travel protection or a general VPN | Worth considering, provided your devices and budget fit. |
| You need guaranteed access to one specific title | Poor fit; Netflix can restrict or block VPN traffic. |
| You use an ad-supported plan or need live events | Do not buy for this purpose; Netflix says VPNs are unsupported. |
| Netflix is your only reason and you want low risk | Try a monthly plan or refundable period before a long commitment. |
| You are temporarily abroad | Use Netflix’s official travel behavior instead of changing your apparent location. |
What to expect in practice
A US VPN server is a conditional workaround, not a permanent “simple trick.” It can alter the IP location Netflix sees, but Netflix controls catalog delivery and actively classifies VPN traffic. Check the plan restrictions, test on your actual device, and treat any success as subject to change rather than as a guarantee.

Will Netflix ban my account for using a VPN?
Netflix’s cited help pages describe proxy errors and restricted viewing, not a universal account-ban rule. Netflix can nevertheless limit playback or catalog access.
Can a free VPN work?
There is no dependable guarantee. Free services may lack selectable US servers, have data or speed limits, or raise privacy concerns; Proton’s free tier uses randomly selected servers in ten countries.
Can a VPN change my Netflix billing country?
No. Netflix says the account country changes only when a subscriber actually moves and restarts membership in the new country.
Why do I see only Netflix Originals or a small catalog?
Netflix may be applying its globally licensed-title behavior when it detects or cannot verify the VPN connection.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I watch downloads abroad?
Not reliably. Netflix says regional rights can prevent a downloaded title from playing in another country.
What if the VPN works in a browser but not in the Netflix app?
Restart the app, sign out and back in, and check the device’s network and router for another VPN or DNS configuration. Netflix may also classify the app’s connection differently.
