Fix Netflix on Android TV in this order: test another app and Netflix elsewhere, restart the router and TV completely, update Netflix and the TV software, clear Netflix’s cache, then clear its data or reinstall it. If Netflix is missing from Google Play Store or reports that the device is unsupported, repeated resets will not restore compatibility; use a supported streaming device instead.
“Android TV” covers Sony, TCL, Hisense, Philips, Xiaomi, NVIDIA Shield and other devices, while Google TV uses a related but different interface. Menu names can vary by manufacturer and firmware.
First identify what is failing
“Netflix not working” can mean the app will not open, remains on a loading screen, crashes to Home, shows a black screen, buffers, signs you out, refuses one title, or displays an error code. Run these quick tests before changing settings:
- Try another streaming app on the same TV.
- Try Netflix on a phone or computer on the same home network.
- Try a different Netflix title and note the exact error code or wording.

Do not assume Netflix is experiencing an outage. Check Netflix’s Help Center or service-status information for the exact code before treating a single TV failure as a service-wide problem.

1. Check the network and restart the router
- Open Settings → Network & Internet or Settings → Wi‑Fi and confirm the intended network.
- Play something in another streaming app. If possible, connect the TV or box by Ethernet; a wired connection that works points to Wi‑Fi rather than Netflix.
- Turn off the TV or streaming device. Unplug the modem and router for at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and router, then wait about one minute (some equipment takes longer) for internet service to return.
- Restart the TV and test Netflix.
Weak Wi‑Fi commonly causes buffering rather than a failure to open. A guest or captive-portal network, VPN, custom DNS, ad-blocking DNS, IPv6 or router filtering can interfere with authentication. Temporarily remove those variables, if safe, and test again. Netflix’s network guidance is at Netflix’s network troubleshooting page and Google’s Wi‑Fi guidance at Google TV Help.
2. Perform a full power restart
A remote-control power press may only enter standby. Turn off the TV or box, unplug its power cable for about 15 seconds, reconnect it and open Netflix. For a frozen Google TV device, Google recommends unplugging it for one minute, reconnecting it, then pressing the remote’s Power button: Google’s restart instructions.
3. Update Netflix and Android TV
Update the Netflix app
- Open Google Play Store.
- Select the profile icon, then Manage apps & games (or the equivalent updates screen).
- Open Updates and select Netflix’s Update, or choose Update all.
- Restart Netflix.
If there is no Update button, the installed version may already be current. If Netflix cannot be found in Play Store, treat that as a compatibility warning rather than downloading a random APK. Netflix explains compatibility at its device-support page.

Update the TV software
On many Android TV models use Settings → About → System software update → Software update (Android TV Help). On Google TV use Settings → System → About → System update → Check for update (Google TV Help). Install available updates, restart and test once more.

Netflix says R-series messages such as R39-1 can mean the app or operating system must be updated. If updating does not remove an unsupported-device message, the hardware or OS may have reached the end of Netflix support: Netflix’s R-series guidance.
4. Clear Netflix cache, then its data
Clear cache first
- Open Settings → Apps → See all apps (some brands place Netflix under System apps).
- Select Netflix → Clear cache or Storage & cache → Clear cache.
- Reopen Netflix.
Cache clearing removes temporary files and is the lowest-risk app reset. Google documents Android TV app maintenance at Android TV Help.

Clear app data if the problem persists
- Open Settings → Apps → See all apps → Netflix → Clear data (also called Clear storage or Clear all data).
- Confirm, reopen Netflix and sign in again.
This resets app settings and normally signs you out; any locally stored downloads may be removed. Have your Netflix password or sign-in method ready. Google’s path is documented at Google TV Help, and Netflix describes the sign-out and download consequences at Netflix Help.
5. Sign out, reinstall, or reset the app
Sign out normally
In Netflix, press Back to reach the menu. If it is at the top, go left to the profile icon; choose Get Help → Sign out → Yes. If the menu is on the left, choose Get Help at the bottom, then Sign out.

Reinstall when the device permits it
In Play Store, find Netflix, choose Uninstall, restart the TV or box, install Netflix again and sign in. Built-in TVs often treat Netflix as a system app and provide no Uninstall button; use Clear data, updates or the manufacturer’s reset option instead. 6. Fix installation, storage, time and account issues
- Free storage: Remove unused apps and downloads, restart, then retry the Play Store update.
- Play Store failure: Update Google Play Store and Google Play Services. Clear Play Store cache; clear its data only when Netflix cannot install or update, not as a universal playback fix.
- Date and time: Enable automatic date and time. Incorrect clock settings can disrupt installation and authentication.
- VPN or filtering: Disable a VPN, custom DNS or router-level filtering temporarily.
- Account: Confirm the Netflix membership is active and there is no billing prompt. App repairs cannot fix a payment suspension.
- Certification: Where available, check that the Android device is Play Protect certified.

8. When Netflix is missing or unsupported
Netflix missing from Google Play Store, marked incompatible, or still reporting unsupported after updates usually indicates an old Android TV version, uncertified box, unavailable manufacturer firmware, missing Google services or hardware/DRM limits. Do not keep factory-resetting such a device or rely on unofficial APKs; sideloading can create security, update and compatibility problems.
The practical fix is a supported HDMI streaming device. A Google TV Streamer (4K) keeps Google’s interface and includes Ethernet; official details are at Google Store and Google specifications. Roku players offer a separate, simple platform at Roku. NVIDIA SHIELD TV is an Android-based premium option for Plex, gaming and advanced playback at NVIDIA. Hardware replacement does not require a new Netflix account.
9. Special cases that need different troubleshooting
- Black screen with sound: Check the selected HDMI input, cable, receiver or soundbar, HDCP compatibility, display settings and firmware. Clearing Netflix cache will not repair a faulty HDMI chain.
- Ethernet works but Wi‑Fi does not: Investigate signal strength, interference, band steering and router configuration.
- Wi‑Fi works but Ethernet does not: Check the cable, router port, Ethernet settings and network isolation.
- Remote is unusable: Try physical TV controls, a supported Google TV phone remote or a USB/Bluetooth input device; support varies by model.
- Everything is slow or frozen: Free storage and update Google TV before blaming Netflix.
10. Factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset erases apps, accounts, settings and stored data and will not fix an unsupported device, an outage, a router fault or an HDMI problem. On Google TV the path is Settings → System → About → Factory reset; Google’s warning is at Google TV Help.
Before resetting, record the Wi‑Fi name and password, Google and Netflix credentials, other streaming passwords, HDMI configuration and parental-control PINs. If Netflix still fails after a reset, contact the TV manufacturer for firmware or hardware help, or use a supported external streamer.
