Watch the Mission: Impossible films in release order. It is also the clearest chronological order: the eight Ethan Hunt movies follow one continuous screen timeline, and none is a prequel or optional spinoff.
The biggest continuity payoff begins with Rogue Nation and continues through Fallout, Dead Reckoning, and The Final Reckoning. For a first viewing, skipping the earlier entries is therefore more likely to weaken the later films than to save time.
The Mission: Impossible movies in order
-
Mission: Impossible (1996)
Brian De Palma’s original introduces Ethan Hunt and Luther Stickell. It is the 111-minute film that establishes the franchise’s core ingredients: covert operations, identity deception, impossible assignments, and the pressure placed on an agent when an operation goes wrong.
Do not confuse its release year with 1998, a date that appears in some incorrect watch-order lists. Paramount identifies the first film as a 1996 release.

Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)
John Woo directs the second movie. It is a straightforward sequel, not a prequel or a side story, so watch it after the 1996 film.
-
Mission: Impossible III (2006)
Directed by J. J. Abrams, the third film shifts more attention toward Ethan’s personal life and the consequences of keeping his work secret. Paramount lists it as a 2006 release with a 126-minute runtime.
-
Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol (2011)
Brad Bird directs the fourth entry. It continues Ethan’s story while expanding the scale of the set pieces and the international team dynamic that becomes increasingly important in the later films.
-
Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation (2015)
Christopher McQuarrie begins his run as director with the fifth movie. This is the point at which the modern run of Mission: Impossible becomes particularly interconnected, making it a poor place to start if you want the later character and organization developments to land properly.

-
Mission: Impossible—Fallout (2018)
The sixth film is a direct continuation of important character and story threads from Rogue Nation. Watch those two consecutively if possible rather than treating Fallout as an isolated action movie.
-
Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning (2023)
This is the seventh film. It was originally released and marketed theatrically as Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One. Older articles, theatrical materials, and physical releases may still use that longer title, but it refers to the same movie; current Paramount listings generally call it Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning.
-
Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning (2025)
The eighth Ethan Hunt movie follows the events of Dead Reckoning. Paramount lists it as a 2025 PG-13 film with a 169-minute runtime. Its title is The Final Reckoning, not Dead Reckoning Part Two.

Is release order the same as chronological order?
For this franchise, yes in practical terms. The films do not require a rearranged timeline, and there are no movie prequels or spinoffs that need to be inserted between the numbered entries. Release order also preserves the way the series develops: the earlier movies are more episodic, while the later run builds more directly on preceding films.

Should you watch every movie?
For a first-time viewer, watch all eight. The first four films can feel more self-contained than the later entries, but they establish Ethan’s working relationships and the franchise’s evolving approach to espionage and spectacle. From Rogue Nation onward, continuity matters much more.
The Final Reckoning is especially dependent on the history built across the series. It revisits or connects with elements from earlier films, so a complete marathon gives its returning characters and plot threads more weight.
If you have very limited time, the minimum sensible modern sequence is Rogue Nation, Fallout, Dead Reckoning, and The Final Reckoning. That shortcut is not the recommended first viewing, but it preserves the most direct late-series arc.
Where to stream the movies
As of August 9, 2026, Paramount+’s official franchise guide says all eight films are available to stream on Paramount+ in the United States. Check the official Paramount+ Mission: Impossible collection before starting, because catalogs can change by country, date, and subscription tier.

Individual films may also appear through services or channels such as Paramount+ Amazon Channel, Paramount+ Roku Premium Channel, Peacock, Pluto TV, FXNow, YouTube TV, and paid digital storefronts. Those listings are title-specific and can change, so use a current local search rather than assuming that one service carries the complete series.
What about the television series?
The 1966–1973 television series and its late-1980s revival are separate productions. They are not required for an eight-film Tom Cruise marathon. Begin with the 1996 movie if your goal is to watch the feature-film series in order.
