The finding was issued on July 24, 2025, more than five weeks after Burrell was found unconscious at her Brooklyn home on June 17. She was 55.
According to the medical examiner, Burrell’s official cause of death was “acute intoxication due to the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine.” The manner of death was classified as suicide.
The wording is significant. Diphenhydramine and cetirizine are antihistamines, while ethanol refers to alcohol. The medical examiner’s report gives a specific toxicological finding; it should not be reduced to the less precise description “a drug overdose.”
What was initially reported about Anne Burrell’s death?
Burrell was found unconscious and unresponsive at her Brooklyn residence on June 17, 2025. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene. An initial 911 report referred to a possible cardiac arrest, but that was not the final determination of the cause of death.

At the time of the first reports, the cause and manner of death were still pending. The New York City medical examiner’s investigation and toxicology review were completed later, with the final determination announced on July 24—37 days after her death.
Cause of death and manner of death are different
In medical-examiner terminology, the cause of death describes the medical condition or injury that led to a person’s death. The manner of death describes how that cause arose. New York City’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner uses categories including natural causes, accident, homicide, suicide, and undetermined death.
