Paragraphs of a Paige is a forthcoming hybrid documentary and scripted film about educator and former U.S. Education Secretary Rod Paige. Directed by Isaac Yowman, it combines documentary storytelling with archival material and reenactments. Texas Southern University’s latest announcement targets a 2027 release, but no premiere date or authorized viewing platform has been announced.
What is Paragraphs of a Paige about?
The film follows Paige’s life and career, from growing up in segregated Mississippi to working as a teacher, coach, university dean, school superintendent and national education policymaker. Its announced approach blends archival material and documentary storytelling with scripted scenes. The trailer credits Isaac Yowman as director, cinematographer and writer.
The film’s announced opening recreates a moment at Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida, during President George W. Bush’s September 11, 2001 visit. According to the announcement, Bush left the classroom after receiving news of the second plane attack and invited Paige to take his place. That scene is a reenactment, not documentary footage of the event.

When will the film be released, and where can you watch it?
The release timing is not settled in the available announcements. The Thomas B. Fordham Institute reported on October 8, 2026, that the film would arrive later that year; Texas Southern University News had announced on October 5 that it was slated for 2027. The university’s 2027 target is the more recent institutional timing, but neither announcement gives a specific date.
No distributor, streaming service, ticket link or physical release is identified in those sources. There is not yet a confirmed place to watch the film. Follow announcements from the filmmakers or Texas Southern University for verified release information.

Who was Rod Paige?
Born in 1933 in segregated Monticello, Mississippi, Paige earned a bachelor’s degree at Jackson State University and master’s and doctoral degrees at Indiana University. He worked as a teacher and coach, then spent a decade as dean of Texas Southern University’s College of Education, where he established a Center for Excellence in Urban Education.
Paige served as a Houston Independent School District trustee and officer from 1990 to 1994, then became the district’s superintendent. The U.S. Senate confirmed him as the nation’s seventh secretary of education on January 21, 2001. He was the first African American to hold the cabinet post and served from 2001 to 2005. In 2016, he returned to Jackson State University as interim president.

One episode from his earlier career was the Jackson State football team’s 1967 game at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, which integrated the stadium. The film commentary says Jackson State beat Grambling in a game that was Grambling’s only loss that season; that detail should be understood as the film’s account rather than as an independently established finding here.

Why is Paige’s legacy tied to No Child Left Behind?
Paige became one of the leading public defenders of No Child Left Behind (NCLB), the federal accountability law implemented during his tenure. The law established testing standards and sanctions for schools that missed benchmarks. Supporters argued that reporting results by student subgroup could make disparities harder to conceal behind schoolwide averages. In a 2003 National Press Club address, Paige put the argument this way: “The No Child Left Behind Act brings a different way of counting. It says we will not only count some of the students; we’ll count all the students.”
That was Paige’s case for the policy, not a neutral assessment of its effects. Educators also criticized repeated testing and the pressure to teach to the test. Paige defended teaching a curriculum aligned with achievement standards and argued that the law did not require schools to cut arts programs or teachers. Congress pulled back many NCLB provisions in 2015; the law’s requirements should not be treated as a description of current federal policy.

A Houston data issue acknowledged in 2003
The same remarks also addressed a state investigation into Houston dropout reporting. Paige acknowledged that 306 Houston schools had submitted inaccurate data in 2001. He said investigators still needed to determine whether the cause was sloppy recordkeeping or intentional wrongdoing. This records a contemporaneous issue he addressed; it does not establish personal culpability.
How has Paige been remembered?
After Paige’s death, former President George W. Bush called him “a leader and a friend” and recalled their phrase “the soft bigotry of low expectations,” according to the Associated Press. Houston Mayor John Whitmire’s December 9, 2025 statement described Paige as “a Houston hero, respected educator and a dear friend.” Those tributes reflect how political and local leaders remembered him; they do not settle debates about the consequences of the policies he championed.
