This ranking covers fully animated theatrical features from Walt Disney Animation Studios—not Pixar, Disneytoon sequels, or live-action hybrids. “Action-packed” is a judgment, not a measured studio statistic, so the order weighs how often action occurs, the variety and scale of set pieces, visual staging, and how much the action matters to the story.
How this ranking works
The films below are ranked by a consistent editorial rubric: action frequency and duration; variety of major set pieces; scale and stakes; clarity and inventiveness of staging; and the importance of action to the story. Frequency is not the same as craft: a movie with fewer, more elaborate sequences can offer more memorable action than one with near-constant movement. The placements are a watch-guide judgment, not an official Disney ranking or a published measurement.
The candidate pool is supported by Disney’s film and genre pages, Rotten Tomatoes’ guide to Disney animated films, and editorial coverage of notable Disney action scenes. Disney’s action-adventure category is useful for discovering titles, but it includes films beyond the studio-feature scope used here. Disney Movies and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ feature-film list establish the relevant catalog context; Rotten Tomatoes describes its own roundup as fully animated theatrical movies.
1. Mulan
Mulan takes the top spot for making military danger central to the story and building its action around clear, consequential set pieces. The conflict escalates from training and combat to a large-scale confrontation, giving the film more than one kind of physical action. Its staging is easy to follow even when the stakes widen from an individual’s survival to the fate of a community. A Rotten Tomatoes editorial roundup includes the film among Disney’s notable action-scene showcases.

Disney’s official description frames the story as a journey that includes action, while the film’s adventure structure moves through escapes, pursuit, and magical peril. It ranks just below Mulan because its action is one strand of a broader mix of comedy, romance, and fantasy rather than the story’s dominant mode.
- Frequency and variety: A varied run of pursuit, escape, and fantasy-driven danger, though action shares space with comedy and character scenes.
- Scale and stakes: Escalates from immediate peril to a threat with wider consequences.
- Tone and narrative role: Lighter and more playful than Mulan; action keeps the adventure moving and tests the characters.
3. Hercules
Hercules earns its place through mythic-scale confrontations and a hero whose identity is bound up with physical challenges. An editorial retrospective highlights Hercules conquering the Hydra as an iconic Disney action sequence. That kind of set piece gives the film a distinct advantage in spectacle, even though the overall story also devotes substantial attention to humor, romance, and the hero’s personal growth.

4. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is less consistently action-heavy than the films above it, but its danger builds toward a large, high-stakes climax. Its inclusion in a published roundup of Disney action scenes points to the force of that climactic material. The film’s darker dramatic tone makes the threat feel consequential; it is a better fit for viewers who value tension and scale over a steady succession of action sequences.
- Frequency and variety: Action is concentrated rather than constant, with the climax carrying much of the film’s physical intensity.
- Scale and stakes: High in the final conflict, where danger extends beyond one character.
- Tone and narrative role: More dramatic than the other entries; action grows from the story’s central conflict.
5. Tangled
Tangled rounds out the list with nimble, character-led action. A Disney action-scene roundup names it among the films worth considering, and its pursuit and escape material gives the adventure forward motion. Compared with the higher-ranked movies, its action is less centered on battle or large-scale confrontation; the appeal lies in movement, improvisation, and the way peril complicates Rapunzel’s journey.
