Do not fact-check a true-crime documentary by checking a few dramatic scenes or searching the case name. Build an auditable claim ledger: record every factual statement, image, clip, interview assertion, statistic and caption; attach its original source, date, provenance, corroboration, contrary evidence, the subject’s response, your confidence and any unresolved limitation. Check that ledger before picture lock and repeat the review whenever a material fact changes.
The aim is not to make a story sound certain. It is to let another editor reproduce your reasoning, distinguish a court finding from an allegation, and see exactly where the evidence is strong, disputed or missing.
What verification means in a true-crime film
A documentary can mislead without containing an invented sentence. A selective quotation, an old photograph presented as current, a reconstructed scene cut next to real footage, or a confident caption can create an impression that the underlying records do not support. Verification tests both the literal claim and the implication a reasonable viewer is likely to take from it.
Recommended Free Tools
For each item, ask four questions:
- What exactly is being asserted?
- What evidence would establish it, and what evidence would disprove or limit it?
- Can an independent editor find the same original material and understand its context?
- How will the film describe uncertainty, disagreement or a source’s interest in a particular narrative?
Keep a separate record for each claim, even when several claims come from one interview. A single source may be accurate about what they saw but unable to establish motive, timing or what happened outside their view.

Build the claim ledger before editing
Start with the script, rough cut, transcripts, graphics, captions, music cues and source folders. Number each factual unit so an editor can move from a line in the film to the supporting file in seconds.
| Ledger field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Claim ID and exact wording | Copy the narration, interview assertion, on-screen text or implied factual proposition verbatim. Note the timecode and version of the cut. |
| Claim type | Classify it as a court or government fact, official statement, witness or family account, expert interpretation, visual item, statistic, or social-media material. |
| Primary source | Give the issuing body or original owner, document title, date, page or timecode, URL or archive reference, and the precise passage that supports the claim. |
| Provenance | Explain how the material was obtained, who supplied it, whether it is complete, and whether it has been copied, translated, edited or recompressed. |
| Corroboration | List independent records and explain what each confirms. Do not count multiple outlets repeating the same wire report as independent confirmation. |
| Contrary evidence | Record denials, conflicting dates, alternative interpretations, exculpatory records and facts that weaken the proposed account. |
| Response | Log when and how the accused person or organization was approached, the material supplied, deadline offered, response received and any refusal or non-response. |
| Assessment | Label the item established, supported allegation, disputed account, inference or unknown. State confidence and the reason for it. |
| Limitations and action | State what cannot be verified and whether to qualify, remove, shorten or replace the material. |
Save the ledger with the project, not in a producer’s personal inbox. PBS and FRONTLINE guidance expects producers to be able to show sourcing in a fact-checking document or annotated script. That standard also protects the production when a challenge arrives months after broadcast.
Step 1: Define the claim precisely
Rewrite ambiguous language into a proposition that could be tested. Separate observation from interpretation and interpretation from opinion. For example, police knew he was dangerous could contain at least three claims: an officer received a particular warning, a report was entered on a certain date, and the warning should have changed police conduct. Each requires different evidence.
Separate fact, implication and opinion
- Direct fact: a judgment states that a hearing occurred on a specified date.
- Allegation: a witness says a person threatened them; the statement is not itself proof that the threat occurred.
- Inference: a sequence of calls may suggest coordination but does not establish an agreement without additional evidence.
- Opinion: an investigator believes a suspect acted from a particular motive.
Write down the hidden assumption. If a narrator says a person was the last one to see the victim, does that mean the last person identified by investigators, the last person known to have entered a building, or literally the last human contact? A fact-checker should test the underlying assumption, not just the surface wording, as Full Fact’s guidance recommends.
Set a falsification test
For every claim, state what would change your assessment. A timestamp that places a phone elsewhere, a complete unedited interview, a later court ruling, or a newly found witness may be decisive. This prevents confirmation bias and makes later corrections faster.
Step 2: Find the original record
Begin with primary material: indictments, judgments, hearing transcripts, exhibits, police or government records, contemporaneous photographs and footage, first-party correspondence, and complete interview recordings. A news article can help locate a record, but it is not a substitute for reading the record.

Check legal and official documents in context
Record the issuing body, document date, procedural status and exact language. A complaint, arrest affidavit or prosecutor’s filing contains allegations; it is not a finding of guilt. A judgment may resolve some facts while leaving others undecided. Note later appeals, amended charges, acquittals, sealed sections and whether a quoted passage is a party’s submission or the court’s own finding.
Check completeness
Obtain the full statement, not a screenshot of one paragraph. Preserve surrounding pages, footnotes, appendices, exhibits and any correction notice. If a record is unavailable, say who holds it, what version you reviewed and what remains unverified. UNESCO’s investigative guidance treats documentation that can confirm or deny source declarations as part of continuing research, rather than an optional add-on.
Step 3: Evaluate every source, including official ones
Authority is not the same as accuracy. The House of Commons Library identifies practical tests that apply to police, experts, campaigners, witnesses and viral accounts alike:
- Authority: Does the source have a legitimate role and direct access to the fact?
- Motivation: Could money, reputation, litigation strategy, politics or personal loyalty benefit from a particular version?
- Accuracy: Has this source been reliable on verifiable details, and are the methods capable of producing the claimed result?
- Relevance: Does the material actually answer this claim, or merely concern the same case?
- Transparency: Can viewers and editors see how the information was obtained and what is withheld?
- Provenance and presentation: Has the material been edited, translated, relabeled or shown out of sequence?
Police affiliation does not prove that an accusation is true, just as a victim’s emotional account does not prove every inference drawn from it. Preserve empathy while testing chronology, wording and independent support.
Step 4: Corroborate controversial assertions
For a controversial allegation, plan on two authoritative, independent sources. PBS Standards generally uses that threshold, and FRONTLINE requires a completion-stage check of every factual assertion, including material claims made by experts and nonexperts. Independence means the sources did not simply copy one another and do not share the same untested origin.

Do not manufacture corroboration by counting a press release, an article quoting that press release and a podcast repeating the article. If only one credible source exists, identify it as a single-source account, disclose the limitation in the film or accompanying material, and avoid language that implies the allegation is established. Consider narrowing the claim to what the source demonstrably knows.

Match evidence to the proposition
Two sources that establish a meeting occurred do not necessarily establish why it occurred. A forensic report may confirm a file’s creation time but not who operated the device. Build corroboration around the precise proposition and document which part each source supports.
Step 5: Seek contrary evidence and a meaningful response
Fairness is an evidence step, not a courtesy added at the end. Before publication, give a person or organization accused of wrongdoing the material needed to answer: the allegation, relevant dates, quotations, documents and the way the film proposes to characterize them. Allow meaningful time, use a reliable contact route and keep a dated record of delivery and follow-up.
Represent the response accurately. Do not turn a refusal to comment into an admission, and do not present a lengthy denial as if it were proof of innocence. If new evidence arrives, reassess the narration, edit and captions rather than burying the response in end credits. FRONTLINE guidance calls for examining contrary information, offering attacked parties an opportunity to respond and correcting errors.

Step 6: Verify photographs, video and audio
Visual material can be authentic yet misleading. Verification must cover identity, time, place, edits and context.
- Locate the earliest available version. Contact the original owner or uploader and preserve the file as received. Record the account, upload time and any stated circumstances.
- Compare versions. Download or archive alternate copies. Note missing frames, changed audio, crops, speed changes, overlays, recompression and edits between versions.
- Reverse-search stills and keyframes. Search distinctive frames, signs, faces, buildings and objects. A reverse match can reveal an older event or a different location, but it is a lead, not proof by itself.
- Test geography and time. Compare road layouts, shadows, weather, language, uniforms, signage and known construction changes. Check whether the claimed date fits daylight and local conditions.
- Inspect metadata where available. Record creation data, device information and file history, while recognizing that platforms often strip or rewrite metadata.
- Cross-check independently. Look for contemporaneous emergency logs, court exhibits, other camera angles, eyewitness accounts or reputable records that place the material at the claimed event.
- Describe edits honestly. If the production has blurred a face, stabilized a clip, translated speech or reconstructed missing audio, label that treatment and do not imply the result is an untouched original.
House of Commons Library guidance emphasizes upload-time checks, reverse-image search, comparison of versions and contextual cross-checks. PBS recommends testing manipulation and linking to the original where feasible.
Step 7: Authenticate social-media material
For a post, preserve the account URL, profile history, post ID, upload time as displayed, archive capture and the original uploader’s contact information. Confirm that the account belongs to the claimed person or organization; a copied avatar and similar username are not identity proof.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Ask who had access to the device, whether the post was edited or reuploaded, and whether the stated location and time fit independent evidence. Contact the uploader without revealing unnecessary personal data. Screenshots alone lose context and can be altered, so retain the underlying file and a record of how it was obtained.
Step 8: Preserve an evidence trail another editor can reproduce
Keep downloaded originals, stable copies or archive captures, access dates, permissions, file hashes where practical, transcript timecodes, translation notes and the reason each item was accepted or rejected. The U.S. Department of Justice uses a broad definition of documentary material that includes paper, photographs, film, audio and video, and electronic recordings; your storage plan should be equally broad.
- Use read-only or access-controlled originals and work from copies.
- Give files stable names tied to claim IDs, such as
C-014_police-report_2024-05-12.pdf. - Store permission terms and restrictions beside the asset, not in a separate conversation.
- Preserve the unedited interview and a transcript with speaker labels, translation choices and uncertain words marked.
- Log every transformation: trimming, color correction, denoising, subtitles, blurring and aspect-ratio changes.
- Back up the ledger and evidence in more than one secure location, with access limited to people who need it.
Documentary material may contain addresses, medical information, minors’ identities or operational details. Protect it from unauthorized disclosure while retaining enough information for editorial review.
Step 9: Label uncertainty instead of hiding it
Use a controlled vocabulary consistently:
| Label | Use it when | Safe wording pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Established fact | A reliable primary record or adjudicated finding supports the proposition and material contrary evidence has been considered. | “The judgment states…” or “Records show…” |
| Supported allegation | A specific person or document makes the allegation and independent evidence supports parts of it, but no final finding resolves it. | “Prosecutors alleged…” and identify the supporting record. |
| Disputed account | Credible sources conflict or the subject expressly contests the claim. | Present the competing accounts and what can be independently confirmed. |
| Inference | The conclusion is reasoned from evidence but not directly stated in a record. | “That sequence may suggest…” and explain the basis. |
| Unknown | The available material cannot answer the question. | Say what is not known and why, rather than filling the gap with implication. |
Do not let ominous music, a dark color grade or a montage convert an unknown into an apparent fact. Context is part of accuracy: PBS Standards describes accuracy as honesty, fidelity to facts and sufficient context so the public is not misled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 10: Reduce defamation, privacy and safety risks
Defamation law varies by jurisdiction and depends on the person’s status, the wording, publication context, fault standard and available defenses. Editorial verification cannot replace advice from qualified counsel, but it can prevent avoidable risk.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Attribute allegations to the person, filing or agency that made them; do not state an unresolved accusation as your own conclusion.
- Distinguish an arrest, charge, investigation, civil claim, conviction, acquittal and dismissal.
- Use precise dates and procedural status so viewers do not mistake an early filing for a final finding.
- Remove unnecessary private details, especially addresses, medical information, contact data and identifying information about minors or vulnerable relatives.
- Consider whether publication could expose victims or witnesses to harassment, retaliation or renewed trauma.
- Check translations, names, titles, pronouns and culturally specific terms with a competent reviewer.
- Assess operational-security risks: revealing a safe location, access method, source identity or investigative technique can cause real harm.
Keep a visible correction process. If an error is found, correct the digital version, note what changed and communicate the correction in a place comparable to the original claim. Full Fact and PBS both emphasize transparent sourcing and corrections.

The evidence matrix for different claim classes
| Claim class | Minimum record | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Court or government fact | Primary document, issuing body, date, exact passage and procedural status. | Originality, legal status and completeness. |
| Police or official statement | Full statement, speaker’s role, date and a clear separation of allegation from finding. | Authority, incentives and independent corroboration. |
| Witness or family account | Recorded interview, consent, exact wording, contemporaneous support and response to contradictions. | Proximity, consistency and independent support. |
| Expert interpretation | Credentials, method, underlying data, limitations and any peer or independent review. | Expertise, method and reproducibility. |
| Photo, video or audio | Original file or earliest post, provenance, metadata, reverse-search results and contextual checks. | Authenticity, date, location and edit history. |
| Social-media material | Account provenance, archive, original-uploader contact and independent confirmation. | Identity, timing, manipulation and context. |
Run the final line-by-line check
Do this on the locked cut and again after any material change. Play the film with the ledger open and inspect every factual element, including items that are not spoken.
- Names, aliases, titles, ages, dates and places.
- Pronunciation, translation, subtitles and quoted wording.
- Captions, maps, lower-thirds, charts, timelines and file labels.
- Every photograph, frame, sound effect, phone recording and piece of archive footage.
- Whether a reconstruction is unmistakably labeled and visually distinct from documentary evidence.
- Whether edits create a false sequence or make a response appear to answer a different allegation.
- Whether the latest court outcome, correction or response is reflected.
- Whether each controversial assertion has two independent authoritative sources or an explicit limitation.
An editor who did not make the film should be able to open a claim ID, find the source, understand its provenance and see why the wording is justified. If that cannot be done, revise the claim or remove it.
Common verification failures and repairs
“It came from the police, so it is confirmed”
Failure: treating an official statement as a finding. Repair: identify the speaker, quote the statement in full context, label it an allegation where appropriate and seek independent records.
“The image search found the same picture”
Failure: treating a reverse-search match as authentication. Repair: locate the earliest version, compare edits, test time and place, inspect metadata and corroborate the event independently.
“Several outlets reported it”
Failure: mistaking repetition for independence. Repair: trace each report to its first source and count only genuinely independent evidence.
“The subject declined to comment”
Failure: implying guilt from silence. Repair: document a fair opportunity to respond, state the non-response neutrally and assess the underlying evidence on its own.
“The cut is finished, so fact-checking is over”
Failure: overlooking changed captions, tightened edits or a new legal ruling. Repair: repeat the line-by-line check whenever material facts, wording or visuals change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical sign-off checklist
- Every factual sentence, image, clip, statistic and caption has a claim ID.
- Each ID has an original or earliest available source and a precise passage or timecode.
- Provenance, permissions, access date and transformations are recorded.
- Controversial claims have two independent authoritative sources, or the limitation is explicit.
- Contrary evidence has been sought and assessed.
- Accused people and organizations received the material needed to respond and their replies are represented accurately.
- Uncertainty labels match the evidence and legal status.
- Privacy, harassment, distress and operational-security risks have been considered.
- Names, dates, translations, graphics and archive context have been checked in the final cut.
- A correction route and an accessible evidence file exist for future editors.
Verification is complete only when the film’s confidence matches the record behind it. A carefully qualified unknown is more trustworthy than a dramatic certainty no editor can reproduce.
