To stream a playlist from a VPS to YouTube over RTMPS, prepare a local file list, have FFmpeg read and loop it, encode to settings suited to your media and server, then send the output to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The command below is an adaptable template, not a tested recipe for every playlist or VPS: file compatibility, FFmpeg build, server capacity and YouTube’s current ingest settings all matter.
Before you start
- A channel enabled for live streaming: YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; the streamer must be at least 16. Check eligibility and activation details in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A VPS that can read and encode your files: Install an FFmpeg build with the needed input, encoder and RTMPS support. Available encoders and hardware acceleration vary by build and server; do not assume every package includes the same options.
- Media with compatible streams: A concat-demuxer playlist works best when files have matching stream layouts and compatible codecs. Confirm the paths and the media before starting a long broadcast.
- A private YouTube stream key: Treat it as a password. Anyone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
Get the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream or scheduled live stream.
- In the stream setup, copy the server URL and stream key. If you specifically want RTMPS, select or retrieve the RTMPS endpoint; YouTube warns that the default URL shown may not be RTMPS. Its explanation is that RTMPS is RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection and provides encryption. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Use the URL and key exactly as shown. Do not paste the key into a public script, repository or support post. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the sender.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. See YouTube’s stream-settings guidance.
Build a local playlist for FFmpeg
For a set of files on the VPS, the concat demuxer reads a text file with one file entry per line. Create a file such as playlist.txt:
file 'path/to/first-video.mp4'
file 'path/to/second-video.mp4'
file 'path/to/third-video.mp4'
Use paths that exist on the VPS. The entries above illustrate the basic format; filenames containing unusual characters or quotes may need careful handling. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer has path-safety behavior, and its -safe 0 option relaxes safety checks. Use it only with a list and paths you trust. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for details.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The concat demuxer expects compatible streams across the listed files. Differences in codecs, stream layouts or timestamps can cause problems, and inaccurate duration information can create gaps or artifacts at transitions. If the playlist is an M3U/M3U8 URL or another source type rather than a local concat list, its syntax and input options may differ; do not assume this file-list command applies to it.
Choose output settings for YouTube and your VPS
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and advises not to exceed 4 seconds. Select a bitrate from YouTube’s table for your target resolution and frame rate rather than treating one value as universal: YouTube encoder settings.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the output to the source and the stream you intend to run. YouTube lists support up to 60 fps; higher output settings also increase encoding and bandwidth demands.
- Video codec and bitrate: H.264 is used in the example below. Use CBR and choose a bitrate within YouTube’s range for the chosen resolution and frame rate. Whether a particular VPS can encode that output in real time depends on its CPU or available hardware encoder; the sources do not establish instance-size benchmarks.
- Keyframes: A 2-second interval is the recommendation; do not exceed 4 seconds. For a 30 fps output, a GOP size of 60 frames corresponds to two seconds.
- Stereo audio: YouTube’s advanced recommendations list 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo. For 5.1 audio, its guidance specifies AAC, 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
- Color: For ordinary SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. HDR requires a separate configuration; YouTube recommends HEVC for HDR and notes AV1 is not supported for HDR.
- Network capacity: YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the combined primary and backup stream bitrates. Allow for the actual feed configuration and monitor the connection rather than assuming the VPS’s advertised capacity is sustained throughput.
Start the playlist stream with FFmpeg
This example reads a local concat-demuxer list, loops the input indefinitely and sends an H.264/AAC feed in FLV format to an RTMPS endpoint. Replace the endpoint with the URL and key provided by YouTube Live Control Room. The 4,500 Kbps video bitrate is only an example; choose the appropriate value for your resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s guidance.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'
In the template, -re reads the file input at its natural pace, and -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping of that input. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option, so it belongs before the relevant -i. The concat input and loop behavior are documented in the FFmpeg command-line documentation and format documentation.

The placeholder endpoint is not literal: use the RTMPS URL from YouTube, followed by the stream key in the form expected by the endpoint. Avoid putting a real key in shell history or a script readable by other users. This assembled command has not been validated against your specific files, FFmpeg build or VPS, so verify it with a short test before relying on it.
Validate the feed and keep it running
- Start FFmpeg and watch its output for connection errors, encoder errors, repeated warnings or a process that exits.
- Open the stream preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that video and audio arrive and that the preview is stable before clicking Go live for a scheduled stream.
- Monitor the preview and FFmpeg process during operation. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring stream quality; check audio, picture, continuity and network status rather than leaving the VPS unattended.
- When ending the broadcast, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume an indefinitely running stream will appear as one complete archived video.
For long-running service, the FFmpeg process must remain alive and the VPS must stay reachable. Process supervision, restart policy, firewall rules and VPS-provider behavior depend on the operating system and host; confirm those separately rather than treating the one-shot command as a service manager.

Troubleshooting
No incoming stream preview
- Re-copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and ensure it is the RTMPS endpoint, not a different ingest URL.
- Check that the stream key is current and has not been mixed into the URL incorrectly. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the FFmpeg destination.
- Check that the VPS can make an outbound connection to the endpoint. Provider or firewall rules can block connectivity; the exact cause depends on the host.
- Look at FFmpeg’s error output for protocol, TLS, authentication or encoder failures, then verify the FFmpeg build supports the required components.
Playlist ends instead of looping
Confirm that -stream_loop -1 appears before the input’s -i. It is an input option; placing it after the input may not apply to that playlist.
Gaps, glitches or failures at file transitions
Check that concat entries point to the intended files and that their streams and timestamps are compatible. Revisit duration information if there are gaps or artifacts. If the files differ substantially in codec or stream layout, normalize them to a consistent format before concatenating or use a workflow suited to those inputs.

Dropped frames, buffering or unstable quality
Reduce output resolution, frame rate, encoding load or bitrate until the VPS and network can sustain the feed. Keep the recommended bandwidth margin beyond the primary and any backup stream, and use the Live Control Room preview to check whether the feed stabilizes. A particular VPS’s real-time encoding capacity cannot be inferred from the command alone.
Unexpected key rejection
Confirm that the key belongs to the selected stream and that the destination matches the RTMPS server URL. If the key was reset or changed, update the FFmpeg command or protected configuration with the new value.
