A Linux server does not need a desktop environment to process a YouTube playlist from the command line. But playing playlist media on a server is not the same as broadcasting it as a public YouTube Live stream. For playback, yt-dlp can send media to a command-line player; for a live event, configure an encoder with the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. Choose the workflow that matches the result you want.
First choose: headless playback or a YouTube Live broadcast?

A headless server can run command-line media software without a graphical desktop. The practical question is where you want the picture and sound to go: a player output you can access, or YouTube Live.
Play a YouTube playlist on a headless Linux server
Check the output before running a pipeline
The documented yt-dlp-to-VLC pipeline sends media to standard output and has VLC read standard input. It demonstrates a single video URL; it does not establish that a playlist URL will behave as a sequence of independent, player-ready streams in every current yt-dlp and VLC setup. A remote server also will not necessarily produce audible or visible output just because VLC starts: arrange the destination or remote-access method for your player first.
For the documented single-video case, the yt-dlp FAQ gives this example:

yt-dlp -o - "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaW_jenozKcj" | vlc -This plays through a player pipeline; it does not send a broadcast to YouTube Live. Confirm the current yt-dlp version and output behavior before adapting it to playlist use.
Control which playlist entries yt-dlp selects
yt-dlp provides playlist controls including --yes-playlist, --no-playlist, and --playlist-items. Use them to make the intended selection explicit: --no-playlist requests the individual video rather than playlist handling; --yes-playlist requests playlist handling; and --playlist-items selects entries. Check the current yt-dlp documentation for the option syntax and behavior for your installed version.
Do not assume that replacing the example’s video URL with a playlist URL produces a reliable continuous output stream. The documented FAQ example is for a single video, and playlist entries are distinct media items. Verify how your installed versions handle the selected playlist and how the player receives boundaries between entries before relying on a pipeline unattended.

Use FFmpeg-assisted stdout only after checking current behavior
The yt-dlp FAQ describes an FFmpeg-assisted option for streaming to stdout when FFmpeg is installed:
yt-dlp -o - --downloader ffmpeg -f "bv*+ba/b" "VIDEO_URL"This is an option to investigate for a video, not a complete unattended playlist player or YouTube Live configuration. Replace VIDEO_URL with the intended video URL and verify current yt-dlp behavior, format availability, and the output expected by your player. The format selector can choose separate best video and audio streams when available, so the resulting pipeline’s compatibility depends on how the downloader and player handle the media.
Broadcast a feed to YouTube Live from Linux
1. Create or open the live event
In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the event. Configure an encoder on the server to send its output to that destination. The key is credential-like information that allows YouTube to accept the encoder feed: keep it out of public logs, shell history, screenshots, and shared configuration files. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube’s live-stream settings.

This is a separate workflow from piping yt-dlp output into VLC. A player pipeline does not by itself create a YouTube Live event; the encoder must send a feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
2. Choose protocol and encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate (CBR) encoding; up to 60 frames per second; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Match resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to the source and the server’s actual upload capacity.

These are YouTube recommendations for the stated codec, resolution, and frame rate, not measurements of your server’s throughput or guaranteed minimums. Other combinations have different recommendations; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings table before configuring an encoder. Leave practical headroom for network variation rather than setting a target the server’s connection cannot sustain.

3. Treat HLS as a specialized ingest option
YouTube’s HLS ingest has protocol requirements beyond choosing an encoder bitrate: the documented workflow uses TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations of 1–4 seconds. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments. Use HLS only when your encoder or use case calls for it, such as an applicable codec or HDR workflow, and follow the current YouTube instructions rather than substituting RTMP settings.

Technical access to a YouTube video or playlist is not permission to retransmit it. Confirm that you own the material or have the rights needed for the planned live use, including music, footage, and other embedded content. Do not assume that public availability, attribution, or a playlist owner’s permission clears the rights of every contributor.
Review YouTube’s current copyright and channel policies before going live. This Linux workflow does not establish whether a channel is eligible for live streaming or whether repeated, reused, or third-party content is permitted for a particular channel or monetization decision. Those questions depend on YouTube’s rules and the content and permissions involved.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
- The command plays locally but no live event appears: a yt-dlp-to-VLC pipe is playback, not live ingest. Set up an encoder feed using the event’s YouTube stream URL and key.
- VLC starts but there is no sound or picture you can access: standard-input playback alone does not configure a headless server’s output. Configure an appropriate destination or remote-access method and test it independently.
- A playlist behaves differently from one video: the documented stdout example uses a single-video URL. Check playlist selection flags and verify current tool behavior with the exact versions and playlist you intend to use.
- YouTube does not accept or sustain the feed: check the stream key and destination, encoder codec and protocol, CBR setting, keyframe interval, and whether the selected bitrate is appropriate for the resolution, frame rate, and available upload capacity.
- A key appears in logs or shared files: treat it as exposed and rotate it in YouTube Live Control Room; avoid printing secrets in diagnostic output.
- The broadcast has rights or policy problems: stop and resolve permissions and applicable YouTube policy issues. Successful ingest does not establish authorization to stream the material.
