Spoilers for “Homecoming,” the series finale. The 126 survives the asteroid-triggered nuclear emergency, and a five-month flash-forward shows the team moving into new chapters. Owen Strand lives but leaves Austin for a job as New York’s fire chief; T.K. and Carlos adopt Jonah, Tommy is in remission, and Judd leads the 126. The hopeful ending was deliberate, though Rob Lowe later said he had pitched a much darker fate for Owen.
What happens in the “Homecoming” finale?
FOX scheduled “Homecoming” as the series finale for February 3, 2025. The episode puts the 126 through two escalating crises: an asteroid strikes Austin, and the team confronts a nuclear emergency. Its apparent-death moments make the immediate outcome look bleak, but the five-month time jump confirms that the principal characters have survived. FOX’s series listing
Owen survives, then leaves Austin
Owen appears to sacrifice himself while shutting down the reactor, but he survives. In the flash-forward, he accepts a job as New York’s fire chief. Showrunner and executive producer Rashad Raisani framed the move as a consequence of the 126’s recovery: “The 126 no longer needs Owen. Owen has to go where he is needed.” TheWrap’s interview with Raisani
T.K. and Carlos become Jonah’s parents
T.K. and Carlos’s effort to adopt T.K.’s half-brother Jonah is complicated by concerns about the danger in their jobs. By the time of the flash-forward, the adoption has gone through. T.K. leaves firefighting to become a stay-at-home dad, while Carlos remains a Texas Ranger. Us Weekly’s finale recap

Why does the ending take a hopeful turn?
Raisani described the finale as a full-circle resolution. The characters and firehouse began the series marked by trauma and illness; the ending gives them room to heal and build lives beyond the latest crisis. Before the episode aired, he told TheWrap: “I wanted people to leave with a sense of hope.” He also said, “It’s sad enough that the thing is ending, in my opinion, too soon. Why punch people in the stomach on their way out the door?” TheWrap
