Combine general illumination, task lighting for activities, and accent lighting for depth. Then place fixtures where faces and work surfaces actually need light, control glare with the right aperture and optics, and add dimming so one room can serve different moments.
Those principles come from four designers interviewed by Kara Baskin for The Boston Globe (updated September 18, 2024). They are especially useful in older rooms with little or no ceiling lighting, where a combination of wall, ceiling and portable fixtures can outperform a single replacement fitting.
Start with a lighting audit, not a shopping list
Walk through the room at the times you use it most and record what is difficult to see. In a kitchen, that might be a chopping board or the back of a cabinet counter. In a bathroom, it may be your face in the mirror. In a living room, notice whether seating is comfortable for reading and whether artwork disappears after dark. Also note where shadows fall, where a bare lamp causes glare, and which switches control existing fixtures.
Make a simple plan before choosing styles:
- Mark activities. Identify worktops, desks, reading chairs, mirrors, stairs and circulation paths that need usable light.
- Mark visual features. Choose art, architectural details or a textured wall that could benefit from a softer highlight.
- Mark infrastructure. Record ceiling boxes, wall boxes, outlets and switch locations. A room without a ceiling box can still be lit well, but the plan may rely more on sconces, plug-in fixtures or a new electrical run.
- Separate controls. Put general, task and accent sources on independent switches or dimmers where practical. Separate controls let you use only the light you need instead of running every fixture at full output.
This audit prevents a common mistake: buying a fixture because it looks right in a showroom and discovering that the work surface remains dark or the mirror casts harsh shadows.

Build three layers instead of asking one fixture to do everything
Lighting designer Lucy Dearborn recommends combining wall sconces, art lighting and recessed lighting. Her warning is concise: “Don’t expect one fixture or one set of fixtures to do all the work.” The three-layer model below turns that advice into a room-by-room checklist.
| Layer | Purpose | Typical locations | Planning question |
|---|---|---|---|
| General (ambient) | Provides an even base level so you can move around and see the room. | Ceiling fixtures, recessed downlights, evenly distributed sconces or an illuminated fan. | Can someone enter, clean and navigate without dark pockets? |
| Task | Places useful light on a specific activity or surface. | Kitchen counters and islands, desks, reading seats, bathroom mirrors and work benches. | Does the light reach the surface without your head or cabinets blocking it? |
| Accent | Adds contrast and directs attention to objects or architecture. | Art lights, wall sconces, grazing light on texture and selected decorative pendants. | Which feature should stand out when the general lights are dimmed? |
A fixture can serve more than one layer. A pendant may be decorative accent lighting and task lighting over an island, while a chandelier-ceiling-fan hybrid can provide both a room’s general light and air movement. Classify each fixture by the job it must perform before judging its appearance.
Kitchen: light the work surface, not just the ceiling
Pendants are attractive over an island, but decorative fixtures alone are not enough if they leave the counter dim. Nancy Goldstein advises adding other sources, including recessed lighting, when pendants do not adequately illuminate the work surface. Use the audit to check the actual place where food is prepared, rather than judging brightness from the floor.
Combine pendants with a general layer
Use pendants for focused island light and visual character, then distribute general illumination so the rest of the kitchen is usable. Recessed fixtures can fill the gaps between cabinets and circulation areas. Wall-mounted or under-cabinet sources can add another task layer where the counter is shadowed by upper cabinets; select their placement based on the surface, not symmetry alone.

Match recessed aperture to the ceiling
Goldstein says aperture size should be considered in relation to ceiling height. A low ceiling and a high ceiling place the light source at different distances from the counter, so the same layout may not produce the same result. Before cutting openings, confirm the proposed fixture’s beam spread, trim and spacing with the manufacturer and an installer. The article’s professionals favor high-performance, small-aperture recessed lights; Dearborn notes that four-inch linear LED versions are now available. Small does not automatically mean better, so evaluate delivered light and glare rather than the hole size by itself.

Plan controls around kitchen use
Put work lighting on a control separate from evening accent or general lighting. A bright task setting is useful for preparation and cleaning; a lower setting can make the kitchen comfortable when it opens onto a dining or living area. Dimming also exposes whether a pendant or downlight is visually harsh at full output.
Bathroom: put light beside the mirror when space allows
An overhead fixture above a mirror can cast shadows under the eyes, nose and chin. Goldstein recommends two sconces on either side of the mirror, at face level, when the wall has enough room. She calls this more “human lighting” because it illuminates the face from the sides rather than from directly overhead.
Use a balanced pair
Center each sconce vertically around the face rather than treating the mirror’s top edge as the only reference. Keep the pair visually balanced and choose shades or diffusers that soften the source. The goal is even illumination from both sides, not a bright hotspot on one cheek.
When side space is unavailable
If the mirror is tightly bounded by a wall, cabinet or door, retain the best possible overhead position and add another nearby layer to reduce contrast. A dimmable ceiling or wall source can be adjusted for grooming and for nighttime use. Any fixture near water should be selected and installed according to local electrical requirements; ask a qualified electrician to confirm the appropriate location and rating.
Recessed LEDs: compare performance, control and comfort
Recessed LED downlights can supply a clean general layer, but the designers distinguish quality fixtures from merely easy-to-install products. Dearborn highlights high-performance, small-aperture models. Goldstein cautions that quality varies among wafer lights and says some can appear glary when the light source sits slightly recessed or at the ceiling plane. Treat that as a professional assessment, not a universal test result: inspect the trim, diffuser and viewing angle in your own room.

Use a comparison checklist
- Light distribution: Check whether the beam covers the intended floor or work surface without leaving dark gaps.
- Glare control: Look at the fixture from normal seated and standing positions, not only from directly below.
- Aperture and ceiling context: Relate the opening size and throw distance to ceiling height, as Goldstein recommends.
- Dimming behavior: Verify that the downlight and dimmer are compatible and that the light remains stable at low levels.
- Color control: If the model offers adjustable color temperature, confirm how it is changed and whether all fixtures in the room can be matched.
- Maintenance: Check how the driver and trim can be replaced if a component eventually fails.
Adjustable color temperature is a tool, not a rule
Cindy Collings recommends a four-inch dimmable LED downlight from WAC and explains that adjustable color temperature can adapt a room to its use. The article gives a soft yellow 3000 kelvin setting as a kitchen example and a bluer 6000 kelvin setting as an office example. These are illustrative choices from the article, not universal prescriptions. If you choose tunable fixtures, decide which setting suits each activity, then test the actual finish colors and materials under that light before installing a full grid.
Choose fixtures for function before appearance
Style matters, but it should come after the fixture’s job, placement and visual comfort are clear. Compare candidates on the same axes:
| Decision axis | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Function | Ambient, task, accent, or a combined fan-and-light role. | A decorative fixture may not deliver enough useful light for a work surface. |
| Placement | Above a mirror, at face level, over an island, on a wall or in the ceiling. | Position determines shadows and how much of the light reaches the target. |
| Control | Dimming, separate switching and optional color-temperature adjustment. | One room often serves several activities and times of day. |
| Aperture and ceiling context | Opening size, ceiling height, beam spread and spacing. | The same downlight layout behaves differently at different mounting heights. |
| Glare and quality | Trim, diffuser, source visibility and viewing angles. | A fixture that looks neat can still be uncomfortable to sit under. |
| Style and material | Glass, metal, alabaster, finish and scale. | The fixture should support the room without compromising its lighting task. |
| Price point | Initial fixture, controls, electrical work and installation. | Decorative options exist at multiple price points, but the source does not establish current prices. |
Decorative choices that add practical value
Fandeliers for rooms that need light and air movement
Interior designer Michelle Lee Parenteau suggests chandelier-ceiling-fan hybrids, sometimes called “fandeliers” or “aire-deliers.” She says these products have changed substantially over the last four to five years and now incorporate distinctive light fixtures rather than resembling ordinary ceiling fans. They can be useful where a room needs both overhead illumination and a fan but has only one ceiling location. Confirm the fan’s airflow, the light’s output and the control arrangement separately; a stylish combination is not automatically a complete lighting plan.
Alabaster and warm materials
Dearborn describes alabaster as warm, visually textured and especially effective with warm gold leaf. She says it “glows,” a quality that can make a pendant or sconce feel luminous even when dimmed. Because natural stone varies, inspect the actual shade or ask how veining and translucency differ from sample to sample. Use alabaster as a decorative layer while retaining enough general or task light for the room’s activities.
Finishes and budget-friendly styling
Collings describes Hubbardton Forge fixtures as “jewelry for your home” and points to Hinkley and Kichler as more budget-friendly places to look for decorative options. The article also notes midcentury-modern combinations of white frosted glass with matte black, brass or white finishes. These are style directions, not a ranking of brands. Select the finish that works with existing hardware, then confirm that the fixture’s dimensions and light distribution suit the room.

Plan the installation in the right order
- Draw the room to scale. Mark furniture, doors, cabinets, mirrors and the activities identified in your audit.
- Assign layers. Label each proposed fixture as general, task, accent or combined fan/light. Remove any fixture that has no clear job.
- Check sightlines and shadows. Stand where people sit, work and look in the mirror. Reject positions that put a bright source in the normal field of view or place your body between the source and the task.
- Confirm electrical feasibility. Have a licensed professional verify boxes, wiring, load, dimmer compatibility and local code requirements before adding or relocating fixtures.
- Choose controls. Separate the layers and specify compatible dimmers. For tunable fixtures, decide whether adjustment is made at a wall control, remote or app and keep the system consistent within the room.
- Install and aim. Set adjustable trims, sconces and accent fixtures after furniture and artwork are in their intended positions.
- Test at multiple times. Check daytime, evening, full output and dimmed settings. Look for glare, reflected hotspots, dark work areas and color shifts on countertops, paint and textiles.
Troubleshoot the problems that appear after installation
The room is bright but still hard to work in
The general layer may be lighting the floor while the task surface remains in shadow. Add or reposition a task source aimed at the counter, desk or mirror. In a kitchen, do not rely on pendants if they do not illuminate the actual worktop.

Check for exposed source glare, an unsuitable trim or a wafer light whose optics are uncomfortable from normal viewing positions. Reduce the level with a compatible dimmer, add diffusion or replace the trim; do not assume that a smaller aperture alone will solve glare.
The mirror makes faces look shadowed
Move the emphasis from overhead to side lighting. Where wall space permits, use a pair of face-level sconces as Goldstein recommends, then dim the overhead source so it supports rather than dominates.
Color changes between fixtures
Match the color-temperature setting and lamp specifications across the room. If one adjustable downlight is set differently from its neighbors, the variation can be more distracting than a uniformly warmer or cooler choice.
The decorative fixture dominates the room
Reassess scale, brightness and layering. A pendant or chandelier should support the room’s visual hierarchy; lower its level, move it to an accent circuit or simplify surrounding fixtures so the eye is not pulled to every source at once.

A practical decision framework
Use these questions before committing to a design:
- Need a complete base layer? Start with evenly distributed general lighting or a combined fan/light where appropriate.
- Need better visibility for a specific activity? Add task lighting at the work surface, mirror or reading position.
- Need atmosphere or emphasis? Add sconces, art lighting or a decorative pendant on its own control.
- Considering recessed LEDs? Compare performance, glare, aperture, ceiling height and dimming—not just installation speed.
- Considering tunable light? Treat 3000 kelvin and 6000 kelvin as the article’s examples, then test settings with your finishes and routines.
- Choosing between looks and output? Keep the fixture only if it satisfies its assigned lighting job; use a different layer to deliver decoration or atmosphere.
The result to aim for
A successful upgrade lets you change the room without changing the fixture: bright, controlled task light when you are working; comfortable general light for movement; and softer accent light for relaxing. The designers’ consistent message is to layer those purposes, place light at face and work-surface level, and judge recessed products by comfort and performance rather than appearance or installation convenience. Decorative fixtures, alabaster, modern finishes and fan-light hybrids can then add character without being forced to carry every lighting responsibility.
