Test the stream while its YouTube event is Private or Unlisted: start the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview, then verify the watch page, sound, mobile playback and recording before the public event. A clean technical test is not music-rights clearance, and a Content ID claim on an archived live stream may appear only after the stream ends.
Set up a private or unlisted test
For an encoder-based stream, create or select the scheduled event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and keep it from being public while you rehearse. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not guaranteed processing times. - Confirm the channel can stream. YouTube lists channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days and a minimum age of 16 among its requirements for livestreaming. Check Get started with live streaming if the option is unavailable.
- Select the right scheduled event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and confirm the title, date, time and event before connecting the encoder. Consult Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings for event and stream settings.
- Choose the test’s visibility deliberately. Set it to Private if only you and specifically selected viewers should be able to watch. Choose Unlisted if reviewers need a link and you are comfortable with anyone who gets that link watching or sharing it. YouTube explains these settings in Change video privacy settings.
- Check the stream key and source. Confirm the encoder is sending the intended prerecorded video to the selected event with the correct stream key. The key tells YouTube where to receive the feed; treat it like a password and do not expose it in screenshots or shared notes.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview. Check the Live Control Room preview before proceeding. YouTube’s guidance is to check the preview before starting the stream; do not click Go live until you are ready for the event to be live to its selected audience. See YouTube live streaming tips.
Private limits viewing to the owner and people specifically selected. Unlisted videos are not normally shown in search or the channel’s Videos tab, but anyone with the link can watch and reshare. Neither setting prevents YouTube’s systems or human reviewers from reviewing a video for copyright or other abuse-prevention purposes.

Check what viewers will actually see and hear
Once the preview appears, assess the outgoing feed rather than relying only on the encoder’s local display. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality. A pair of headphones you already own can help you hear the outgoing mix; no specific equipment is required.

- Picture: Confirm this is the intended kirtan recording, begins at the right point, and has the expected framing, image quality and overlays.
- Sound: Listen for silence, clipping, distortion, the wrong audio source, or abrupt starts and endings. Check that the singing and accompaniment are intelligible.
- Watch-page access: Open the event’s watch page and confirm that it plays for the intended audience under the selected privacy setting. YouTube recommends checking access from channel and watch pages.
- Mobile playback: Test from a phone or tablet, as YouTube recommends. Check both picture and sound, not just whether the page loads.
- Local recording: If your encoder is making a local archive, confirm it exists, opens and continues to grow during the test. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup.
Use YouTube’s live streaming tips for its broader test and monitoring guidance. These checks apply to a prerecorded kirtan stream; they are not a special YouTube kirtan procedure.
End the test and inspect its archive
After checking playback, end the rehearsal stream and inspect the resulting video in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local backup; see Archive live streams. Confirm the local file is intact as well as the YouTube archive.

Then open the video’s Content details in Studio and review any restrictions or copyright claims. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends, if you choose to archive the video. See Copyright issues with live streams and Learn about copyright claims.
Confirm music rights separately from the technical test
A successful rehearsal shows that the feed can reach YouTube and play; it does not establish that you have permission to broadcast every part of the recording. A kirtan may include a traditional composition, a modern arrangement, a particular sound recording, live performances, accompaniment or backing tracks. Rights can differ across those elements.

YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions state that the provider represents and warrants having the necessary rights for the live content’s use on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers and other rights participants.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. It may show a warning or replace the stream with a placeholder; continued third-party content can interrupt or terminate the stream. Even if you have a license, YouTube says the stream may be interrupted unless the content owner adds your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A clean preview therefore cannot guarantee an uninterrupted public stream or a claim-free archive.

- Confirm that your permissions cover the relevant composition, arrangement, recording and performances, as applicable, and the territories where you plan to stream.
- If a license requires Content ID allowlisting, arrange it with the relevant rights holder before the event.
- After the broadcast, read any claim details in Studio. A claim may block a video, monetize it or track its viewership, and effects may vary by geography. A copyright claim and a copyright takedown or strike are different processes. Dispute only when you have a sound basis and the necessary rights.
Before you make the event public
- Verify the correct scheduled event and its visibility in Live Control Room.
- Confirm the encoder is sending the intended recording with the correct stream key.
- Check the preview, outgoing sound, watch page and mobile playback.
- Confirm the local recording and review the test archive and any Studio restrictions or claims.
- Check music permissions and arrange any required Content ID allowlisting.
- Immediately before the event, confirm its final visibility is Public if that is the intended release. Do not assume Studio’s default matches your plan.
