To switch between games without ending a YouTube broadcast, keep one stream running and change the scene shown by your streaming setup. In OBS, create a scene for each game capture, add any starting or break screens you need, and switch scenes while live. If by “VODs” you mean recorded files rather than live gameplay, that is a different workflow: this guide focuses on changing between games during one continuous broadcast.
Choose how the gameplay reaches YouTube
You can stream directly from a modern PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo console, or use a computer encoder such as OBS. Direct console streaming is the simpler route when its built-in broadcast controls are enough. OBS is a better fit when you want a computer-produced layout with scenes and overlays. YouTube describes both console and encoder routes in its live-streaming guidance.
| Setup | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Direct console stream | Broadcasting from a supported console with its built-in controls. | The cited guidance does not establish that this route provides OBS scene composition or equivalent production controls. |
| Computer encoder with OBS | Switching among composed scenes, overlays, and computer-connected sources. | You must configure and test the video and audio sources on the computer. |
| Console routed through a capture card to OBS | Using OBS when console video needs to enter the streaming computer. | A capture card adds hardware and setup; it is not required for every console stream because direct streaming is also available. |
OBS is optional if direct console streaming meets your needs. A capture card is only one way to bring console video into OBS; it is not a universal prerequisite for changing games during a broadcast. OBS documents game and video-capture sources in its Sources Guide.
Set up game scenes in OBS
- Create a scene for each game. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add and name scenes such as “Game A,” “Game B,” “Starting,” and “Break.” A scene is a collection of sources that determines what appears in the broadcast.
- Add the appropriate capture source to each game scene. OBS documents Game Capture for Windows and video-capture sources, including capture cards. On other systems, use a supported display, window, or macOS capture source that fits your setup. Select the right game or input for each scene and check that it appears in the preview.
- Add interstitial scenes if you need them. A starting or break scene gives you somewhere to switch while you launch a game or change inputs. Add only the sources you want viewers to see during that interval.
- Check audio for every scene. Watch the OBS audio mixer while game sound and any other intended audio are active. If meters do not respond or the wrong device is selected, check the source and device selection; OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking the mixer and selecting devices manually when needed.
- Set optional scene-switching hotkeys. OBS supports hotkeys for switching to a specific scene. Assign an easy-to-reach key for each game or interstitial scene if you want to switch without clicking the Scenes panel. A dedicated control pad is optional; OBS hotkeys can do the job on their own.
- Use Studio Mode if you want to prepare before changing the live output. It separates a preview/edit scene from the live scene so you can prepare the next view and transition it when ready. OBS explains scenes, hotkeys, and Studio Mode in its Studio Overview Guide.
Test the switch before going live
Before the broadcast, run a short private or local test. OBS recommends testing settings for a few minutes so you can catch problems before relying on them live.

- Confirm that each game appears in its intended scene.
- Check that game audio and any other intended audio are present and at the right levels.
- Switch through every scene or assigned hotkey, including the starting and break screens.
- Check that overlays do not cover important gameplay.
During the broadcast, switch to the scene for the next game after its capture source is ready. If you need to change the stream title or game details, use YouTube’s live-control and stream-management tools where available. The cited guidance does not verify the exact current interface steps for editing game metadata mid-broadcast or how quickly every viewer-facing surface reflects a change.
If you mean prerecorded VOD files
Playing recorded gameplay files one after another is not the same as switching between live game captures. OBS has media sources, and it can use playlists with VLC installed, but the cited OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish a complete current procedure or how YouTube will treat a prerecorded gameplay rebroadcast. Do not assume the live-capture steps above explain that separate workflow.

Copyright and live-stream interruptions
YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If third-party material remains after a warning, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. For licensed third-party material, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license alone may not prevent an interruption. YouTube also says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends if you archive it. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. Changing scenes, muting a track, or holding a license should not be treated as a guarantee against enforcement.
