You can stream a pre-recorded playlist to YouTube Live from a Linux VPS by supplying the VPS with authorized video files, sending a continuous encoder feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint with a stream key, and checking the preview in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The YouTube setup is documented; the exact FFmpeg command, playlist scheduler, and VPS size depend on your files and workload, so test your chosen setup privately or unlisted before relying on it.
What the VPS does—and what YouTube calls a live event
The VPS runs the encoder and sends the audio-video feed to YouTube. In YouTube’s terminology, the broadcast is the live event or video, while the stream is the feed associated with it. You can create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio, then connect an encoder feed to the stream settings. YouTube’s Live Streaming API also supports managing broadcasts and streams and binding them. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams
A VPS can keep an encoder process running independently of your home computer, but it does not make a playlist configuration reliable by itself. You still need valid media, a supported ingest setup, sufficient server and network capacity, and a way to monitor the feed.
Check channel eligibility and prepare the broadcast
Confirm live streaming is enabled
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days to go live. Review the current YouTube live-streaming setup guidance and resolve any account restrictions before configuring the VPS.

Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live broadcast and open its stream settings. The exact controls available depend on the event and stream configuration you choose. Decide whether the event should start and stop automatically or wait for manual control; do not assume that stopping the VPS encoder will end every broadcast in the way you intend. Confirm the event’s state in Live Control Room when you finish.
Prepare media you have rights to stream
Place the playlist files on the VPS or make them available to the encoder through a storage location it can access. The files should be readable by your chosen encoder, with the intended video and audio tracks. Keep the playlist and any supporting files organized so you can identify missing or incompatible media during a test. The YouTube documentation cited here does not prescribe a particular playlist format or Linux directory layout.

Choose a YouTube ingest protocol
For an ordinary encoder feed, RTMPS is a reasonable starting point. Use the RTMPS protocol, the valid YouTube ingest server and application path shown in your stream settings, and port 443. YouTube supplies ingestion details for the stream; copy the values from Studio rather than guessing or reusing an endpoint from another setup. Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS
| Protocol | Practical fit | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Common starting point for an encoder sending a continuous feed. | Encrypted ingest; configure the YouTube endpoint and application path correctly and use port 443. |
| HLS | An alternative when the encoder and workflow support YouTube’s HLS ingest format. | Requires protocol-specific playlist and segment packaging; YouTube characterizes HLS as higher latency and oriented toward advanced codecs or high-resolution delivery. |
| DASH | An alternative for compatible advanced delivery workflows. | Requires its own protocol-specific packaging and setup; it is not a drop-in replacement for an RTMPS encoder feed. |
Use an encoder and packaging workflow that support the chosen protocol. YouTube’s protocol comparison describes the trade-offs in encryption, latency, codecs, resolution, and implementation complexity: YouTube Live Streaming Ingestion Protocol Comparison. Its HLS guide covers the required HLS delivery approach: Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS.

Connect the Linux VPS encoder to YouTube
- Read the stream settings in YouTube Studio. Copy the ingest address and stream name/key details supplied for the event. The LiveStreams resource describes these ingestion settings; use the values provided for your own stream. LiveStreams resource
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential that authorizes a feed to the stream. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, public log, or support post. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings before continuing.
- Configure your encoder and playlist. Select the media files, order, repeat behavior, audio, output format, and ingest protocol supported by your encoder. The exact command and service configuration are implementation-specific; YouTube’s cited documentation does not provide a validated FFmpeg playlist-loop command or systemd recovery recipe.
- Start a private or unlisted test feed. Confirm that the VPS can read every file, the encoder can connect, and the event receives both picture and sound. Check the preview before making a public broadcast or depending on a long-running playlist.
- Monitor the event in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends advance setup and continuous audio/video monitoring. Confirm the preview, check for warnings or interruptions, and verify that the intended event is live. YouTube live streaming tips
- Stop and verify cleanly. Stop the encoder when appropriate, then confirm in Studio that the broadcast has ended as intended. Review the archive if one is enabled and check the selected auto-start and auto-stop behavior for the event.
Size and locate an India VPS for the workload
There is no universal VPS size for a playlist stream. Requirements depend on resolution, bitrate, stream duration, whether the server transcodes or simply passes through compatible media, file storage, network path to YouTube ingest, and the provider’s sustained outbound capacity. Compare providers on those factors and total cost; current India-region plans, prices, and performance are not established here, so verify them directly with the provider before choosing.
- CPU: If the VPS encodes or transcodes video, allow for the processing load of the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. A workflow that does not transcode has a different CPU requirement.
- Outbound network: Ensure the connection can sustain the configured feed and tolerate normal variation. Provider headline bandwidth alone does not establish routing quality or long-term throughput to YouTube’s ingest.
- Storage: Calculate space for the playlist files and any temporary or output files your workflow creates.
- Region and routing: An India location may suit your administration or audience needs, but the relevant route is from the VPS to YouTube ingest. Validate connectivity rather than assuming geographic proximity guarantees it.
- Operations: Decide how you will restart a failed process, receive alerts, inspect logs, and update files without exposing the key. A restart policy can recover a process, but it does not prove that YouTube’s event is still accepting the feed.
Rights, copyright checks, and monetization
You are responsible for having the rights needed to exploit the live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” They also require the provider to represent and warrant that it has the necessary rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A match can cause the live image to be replaced, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. If you have a license, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID; permission alone may not prevent an automated interruption. Copyright issues with live streams
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s reused-content policy says channels may be ineligible for monetization when they republish material with little or no significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value—even where the creator has permission. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies before building a channel around repeated or minimally changed material.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder cannot connect. | Ingest protocol, endpoint, application path, port, network egress, or key. | Copy the current settings from YouTube Studio; for RTMPS, verify the RTMPS endpoint and port 443. Confirm the VPS can make outbound connections and that the key has not been changed or exposed. |
| The event exists but no preview appears. | The broadcast and stream may not be correctly connected, or the encoder feed may not be arriving. | Check the event’s stream settings and confirm that the encoder is sending to the matching stream. Wait for the feed status in Live Control Room and inspect encoder logs. |
| Video appears without sound, or sound is missing. | Media track selection, encoder audio configuration, or an unsupported input file. | Test the source file locally or with a short private event, verify that it contains the expected audio track, and check the encoder’s selected audio input and output. |
| The playlist stops at a file boundary or skips an item. | Playlist ordering, file accessibility, or the chosen encoder’s repeat behavior. | Check paths and file permissions, test each item, and validate the playlist-loop behavior with the encoder’s own current documentation. A continuous YouTube event does not itself guarantee that the encoder will advance or repeat files. |
| The stream is interrupted after starting. | Network instability, encoder process failure, or a YouTube third-party match. | Check VPS logs and connectivity, then inspect Live Control Room for notices. If the issue concerns matched material, resolve rights and Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner before restarting. |
| Stopping the VPS does not end the broadcast as expected. | Broadcast auto-stop or event state. | Check the event in Studio and review its start/stop configuration. End the broadcast there if required, then confirm its final state. |
