YouTube supplies the event, server URL and stream key; your playback setup supplies the playlist. YouTube does not provide a native button that turns an archive playlist into a live stream.
Before you schedule the stream
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the event. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and live-streaming tips.
Confirm you have the right to rebroadcast every recording
Archived broadcasts are not automatically cleared for rebroadcast. Check game-publisher rules and the rights to music, third-party clips, voice chat and other material embedded in each recording. YouTube’s livestream terms say creators must have the necessary rights to exploit live content worldwide, including music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content. A rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist even if you have a licence; otherwise, the stream can be interrupted. An unlisted or private test does not remove these obligations or scanning.
If the live stream is archived, Content ID claims may be applied after it ends. Review YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance and its livestream terms.

Set up the playlist and encoder
YouTube documents how to connect an encoder, but not how to configure a particular application to queue multiple local files. Choose a playback source that can play your recordings in the intended order and pass its output to an encoder. OBS is one free, open-source encoder listed by YouTube; you still need to configure and test the playlist source in the application you choose. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming.
- Prepare your files. Put the broadcasts in the order you want them played. Check that each file plays through, and review audio levels, opening and ending sections, transitions and any embedded material that could trigger a rights issue.
- Create the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. Set the event details and visibility there.
- Connect the encoder. Copy YouTube’s server or stream URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields. The key directs the encoder’s feed to your event and lets YouTube accept it; treat it like a password and do not share it publicly.
- Configure playlist playback. Set the chosen playback source to play the files in sequence, then route its audio and video to the encoder. Exact controls depend on the application or device; verify the queue, repeat behavior and transitions in that tool rather than assuming the YouTube event itself handles them.
- Test before going public. Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check the picture, sound, playlist order and transitions, event visibility and watch page. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality; make a private or unlisted test first if appropriate, while remembering that visibility does not change copyright obligations.
- End the event and keep a local copy. Stop the event in YouTube and stop the encoder deliberately. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording or archive backup.
Plan timing and upload capacity
For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours beforehand and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not guarantees of connection quality.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total bitrate of the primary stream and any backup stream. For example, add those bitrates together, then allow an additional 20% of upload capacity. This is platform guidance; real network performance can vary, so test from the connection you will use.
Choose a setup that fits the broadcast

Choose based on whether the playlist needs to run unattended, whether you want to control playback locally, how long the event will run and whether your existing setup is adequate. YouTube does not publish a comparative benchmark here for cost, reliability or video quality.

Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live event: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction applies. If this is the channel’s first time going live, enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube shows no encoder preview: Confirm the encoder is using the server URL and stream key for the correct event, then check that the encoder is running and producing audio and video. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it through YouTube’s controls before reconnecting.
- The playlist skips, stops or plays in the wrong order: Check the queue and playback behavior in the media application, not just the YouTube event. Test the full sequence and transitions before scheduling; YouTube’s encoder guide does not specify playlist-source settings.
- The stream buffers or loses quality: Check the upload connection and encoder output, and leave the 20% upload headroom YouTube recommends for primary and backup bitrates. Test under the conditions you expect to stream.
- The stream is interrupted over third-party content: Review YouTube’s copyright notice and contact the rights holder about permissions or a Content ID allowlist where relevant. A licence does not necessarily prevent automated interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
- The live event is missing from the archive: Do not rely on YouTube’s archive for a stream longer than 12 hours. Keep a local backup, and confirm the event was stopped and archived as expected.
