To stream a live DJ alongside automated playback, combine both audio sources into one program mix, select that mix as the encoder’s audio input, then send the encoder feed to YouTube Live. You can combine the sources in a DJ mixer, audio interface, physical mixer, or audio-routing software; a separate mixer is needed only if your existing setup cannot produce the complete mix reliably.
How the audio signal should flow
The practical signal path is:
Live DJ output + automation playback → one program mix → encoder audio input → YouTube Live
The encoder should receive the finished mix—not two unrelated inputs that may compete, be selected inconsistently, or leave one source out. YouTube supports encoder workflows using external audio hardware, but it does not prescribe one particular radio-station routing arrangement. Choose the combination point that matches your actual outputs and computer setup. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Check YouTube account and stream readiness
For the encoder workflow described by YouTube, the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave account setup until broadcast time. Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream, then enter them in your encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP settings as appropriate. Follow the exact ingest instructions displayed in Live Control Room.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in a screen share, recording, or public post. It identifies where the encoder sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on it again.
Combine the DJ and automation sources
If your equipment already outputs a complete mix
If the DJ mixer or computer already sends both the live DJ audio and automation playback through one output or software bus, route that output to the encoder. Adding another physical mixer may add complexity without solving a real problem. Verify that the outgoing signal contains both sources, rather than assuming that hearing them locally means the encoder receives them.
If the sources are separate
Decide where they will be combined. Depending on your signal chain, that can be the DJ mixer, an audio interface or mixer, or audio-routing software that presents one combined bus to the encoder. Check the actual connectors, input count, and signal levels for the DJ output, playback device, any microphone, and the encoder input before buying hardware. A USB audio mixer can be useful when separate hardware outputs need hands-on level control, but it is optional when the sources are already mixed.

In the encoder, select the device or software bus carrying the complete program mix. Avoid choosing multiple competing capture devices unless you have confirmed how the encoder handles them and which one actually contains both sources. Monitor the same mix that is being sent out so a muted playback channel, wrong bus, or disconnected cable is audible before it reaches viewers.
Set encoder audio and connection options
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. These are YouTube’s current platform recommendations in its encoder settings guidance, not a universal rule for every audio application. Set the encoder’s audio format and bitrate accordingly when those controls are available.

YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; use the RTMPS preset or URL if offered, while following the ingest details in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Test the mix before broadcasting
- Run a test with activity like the planned show: play automation material, bring in the DJ source, and operate any microphone or transitions you expect to use.
- Send a private or unlisted test stream if that suits your setup and audience. Check the Live Control Room preview and listen for both the DJ and automated playback.
- Confirm that the audio is present, balanced enough to understand, and free of unintended silence or clipping. Verify that the encoder is using the intended combined input.
- During the live event, keep listening to the outgoing mix and watch Live Control Room stream-health messages. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the actual event and monitoring stream quality; see its live-streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.
Headphones can help you monitor the program mix, but they do not combine sources and are not a substitute for checking the encoder’s actual input.

Clear music rights for both the live stream and its archive
Technical setup does not grant music rights. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for live and archived content, including relevant rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants, as well as applicable local requirements. Owning a recording or subscribing to a service for ordinary listening does not, by itself, establish that you can publicly livestream the music or leave it available in a YouTube archive.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream; continued third-party content can result in a temporary interruption or termination. YouTube also says that a license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Before going live, confirm with the rights owner or licensing provider that your permission covers the relevant music, territories, live use, and archived availability, and ask whether channel allowlisting is required. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. No single blanket subscription should be assumed to cover every repertoire, territory, livestream, and archive.

Troubleshoot common failures
