Mixxx’s documented Live Broadcasting feature connects to Shoutcast or Icecast; to reach YouTube, route Mixxx audio into a separate encoder such as OBS, add a visual, then send that encoder’s output to YouTube Live using a stream URL and key.
Can Mixxx stream directly to YouTube?
No. The Mixxx 2.5 manual documents direct audio broadcasting to Shoutcast and Icecast servers, not YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires an encoder to send video and audio using the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Mixxx supplies the radio audio; the encoder bridges it to YouTube and provides the video component. See the Mixxx 2.5 Live Broadcasting manual and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Choose how Mixxx audio will reach the encoder

This guide gives the shared workflow without assuming a particular operating system’s audio-routing controls. For local capture, select a loopback or capture input supported by your OS and encoder; consult their current documentation for the exact device and permissions. Do not confuse sending Mixxx to an internet-radio server with sending the resulting stream to YouTube: the encoder-to-YouTube step is still required.
Prepare the YouTube channel and stream
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance, since platform rules can change.

- Open YouTube Studio and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- In the stream’s setup details, locate the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as functioning like the stream’s password and address; keep it private and do not publish or share it.
- Leave the stream setup available while you configure the encoder. The encoder will need the URL and key to connect to YouTube.
Configure Mixxx and capture its audio
For a local capture workflow
- Start Mixxx and load or prepare the program you intend to broadcast.
- In your operating system and encoder, choose an audio input that captures Mixxx’s playback, such as a supported loopback or virtual audio-routing device. Exact names and setup vary by OS; confirm that the selected input is permitted to capture system audio and is receiving Mixxx, not only a microphone.
- Play a representative section in Mixxx and watch the encoder’s audio meter. Confirm that the signal moves at a sensible level and that other system sounds or microphone inputs are not being included unintentionally.
For a Shoutcast or Icecast workflow
- In Mixxx, open Preferences → Live Broadcasting and configure the Shoutcast or Icecast connection details provided by your server. The Mixxx 2.5 manual describes Shoutcast 1, Icecast 1, and Icecast 2.
- For Icecast, enter the host separately from the port; do not put a complete URL in the host field. The mount field cannot be blank. Use the credentials and mount supplied by your provider.
- Save the settings, then choose Options → Enable Live Broadcasting to start Mixxx’s broadcast to that server.
- Configure an encoder that can ingest audio from your chosen radio server, and verify it receives sound before connecting to YouTube. Support for a specific server input depends on the encoder; check that encoder’s current documentation.
Mixxx labels can vary by release or platform. If these menu paths do not match your installation, use the manual for your version. Mixxx warns that Ogg Vorbis is not supported by Shoutcast, so check that your configured stream format is accepted by the server you use.
Add video and set encoder output
YouTube Live is a video destination, even when the program is radio. In the encoder, add a still image, visualizer, or other appropriate visual source, then confirm that the canvas is not blank. This is part of the encoder setup, not a Mixxx feature.

Set resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate for the visual content and the upload capacity you can sustain. A static radio image does not need an unnecessarily large video bitrate; prioritize stable audio and a reliable connection. YouTube transcodes incoming streams for viewers, so follow its current codec-and-resolution table rather than assuming the upload settings dictate every viewer’s playback quality.
YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264/H.265/AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps; it recommends RTMPS. For typical stereo audio, the page recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. It also recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not requirements specific to Mixxx; check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page for the selected codec and video resolution.

Connect the encoder and test before going live
- In the encoder, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the appropriate server and key fields. Confirm the selected protocol and output settings match the encoder’s supported options.
- Start the encoder’s stream output. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview.
- Check that the preview has both picture and Mixxx audio. Listen for clipping, silence, excessive background sound, or an audio/video mismatch.
- Where possible, test with a private or unlisted stream before a public broadcast. Use representative audio and motion, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- Leave upload capacity available for the total outgoing bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; treat this as platform advice and check actual available outbound bandwidth, especially if other devices share the connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- When the broadcast is over, stop or end it through YouTube Studio and stop the encoder as appropriate. Check YouTube’s current guidance for archiving behavior and limits.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The encoder has no Mixxx audio: Confirm Mixxx is playing, the intended capture input is selected, and the operating system has granted any required audio permissions. Check the routing path and encoder meter; the remedy depends on your OS and capture method.
- The encoder connects, but YouTube shows no preview: Recheck the current stream URL and key in YouTube Studio, then verify the encoder’s protocol and output settings. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.
- Mixxx cannot connect to Icecast: Check that the host field contains only a hostname or IP, the port is entered separately, the mount is present, and the credentials match those supplied by the server provider.
- The radio server rejects Mixxx’s stream: Confirm that the configured audio format is supported by the server. In particular, the Mixxx manual notes that Shoutcast does not support Ogg Vorbis.
- The broadcast is unstable or drops: Check available upload bandwidth, competing network traffic, and YouTube stream health. Leave upload headroom and test the full setup before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
