A phone or tablet can let you view a YouTube livestream away from your computer, but seeing the feed is not the same as supervising a child. YouTube’s guidance says to “Always have an adult nearby or aware.” If you cannot ensure responsible adult coverage throughout the stream, reconsider running it.
What remote monitoring can—and cannot—do
Open the official stream on a phone or tablet and confirm you can watch it while away from the computer. That gives you a second screen; it does not establish that the device will alert you to a problem, detect danger, or ensure you can intervene in time. Do not treat an open stream or an unverified notification as a supervision plan.
YouTube’s guidance asks for an adult nearby or aware. The Australian eSafety Commissioner also advises supervising children participating in livestreams. For a stream that runs around the clock, a practical implication is to arrange named adult coverage for every period, including overnight, and make sure the person on duty knows how to stop the broadcast.
Check the child’s age and YouTube’s current rules
YouTube Help’s live-streaming guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, says livestreamers must be at least 16. Its safety guidance says streams featuring 13- to 15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult may have live chat disabled or access to features restricted. If a minor participates on an adult-owned account, YouTube says an adult must be visibly present. Check YouTube’s current rules before setup, since platform policies can change.

Choose the audience setting carefully. YouTube’s Made for Kids designation disables live chat and live chat replay, among other features. If chat is enabled and appropriate for the stream, YouTube advises considering a trusted adult moderator to help filter unwanted chats. A moderator is an additional safeguard, not a replacement for adult supervision.
Set up a responsible monitoring plan
- Confirm the feed is viewable. Put the official stream link on a phone or tablet and check that the live video plays while you are away from the computer. This is only a viewing check.
- Name the responsible adult for each period. For a 24/7 schedule, write down who is on duty at each time and how the handoff happens. Make sure the adult is nearby or aware, consistent with YouTube’s guidance.
- Agree on how to stop the broadcast. Decide who can end it immediately and how that person will be contacted. Verify the steps in advance rather than relying on an assumed alert or control.
- Review the frame and spoken content. Keep names, age, home address, school and phone number out of the stream. Check the background for identifying details such as house numbers or street signs.
- Check privacy, embedding, audience and chat settings. Review these with a trusted adult before going live. If chat is enabled and suitable, designate a trusted adult moderator and agree how to handle concerning interactions; Made for Kids streams have chat features disabled.
- Recheck age and account requirements. Confirm YouTube’s current minimum-age, adult-presence and account rules for the child’s role in the stream.
Why a livestream needs more than a second screen
Live video happens in real time, so there may be no opportunity to review and remove a problem before viewers see it. UK government guidance on platform safety identifies this challenge, and Ofcom’s 2026 materials discuss livestreaming risks for children. Ofcom’s September 9, 2026 Behavioural Audit of Livestreaming Services also reports that safety tools could be skipped during setup. Set safeguards before broadcasting rather than assuming they will be applied automatically.
