Treat example codec settings as a starting point, verify them against your installed Liquidsoap and FFmpeg builds, and clear rights for the separate YouTube transmission.
How the setup works
Liquidsoap supplies the stream-generation process: it reads or receives the station’s audio, pairs it with video, encodes an audio/video stream, and sends that stream to YouTube. Liquidsoap documents YouTube-specific RTMP and HLS output operators; its versioned RTMP reference uses YouTube’s RTMP URL as the default endpoint. Liquidsoap 2.2.5 reference
The station feed may come from a playlist or another source you have configured in Liquidsoap. The important distinction is that a radio audio feed by itself is not a complete audio/video program. For a simple station presentation, use a still image that you are entitled to use, mux it with the radio audio, and encode both together. Liquidsoap’s book demonstrates this pattern, but explicitly treats its values as an example that may need adjustment. Liquidsoap book
Prepare the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and create or configure a live stream. In Live Control Room, review the current stream setup and obtain the ingest URL and stream key for that stream. Use the endpoint YouTube supplies rather than assuming an old example URL is right for your account.
- Choose the ingest transport. YouTube documents RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL; its ingestion guidance specifies a valid RTMPS endpoint and port 443. Liquidsoap’s versioned reference documents RTMP output, so confirm that your installed Liquidsoap build supports the transport required by the endpoint you select. YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide
- Keep the stream key private. Store it in a separate protected file or an equivalent secret store and read it at runtime. Do not commit a live key to public source code or expose it in screenshots or logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
Build the Liquidsoap audio/video output
Connect the radio source
Configure Liquidsoap to read the station feed or playlist you intend to broadcast. The source can be an existing program output or a playlist; make sure it produces the audio you expect before adding the YouTube output. The following worked shape comes from the Liquidsoap book and is illustrative, not a guaranteed drop-in configuration for every current installation:

The key is read from a separate file rather than written directly into the output URL in public configuration.
Check the encoder and format
The example uses FLV with H.264 video (libx264) in yuv420p and MP3 audio (libmp3lame) at 44.1 kHz. Its example bitrates are 300 kb/s for video and 160 kb/s for audio. These are values in the book’s worked example, not a universal YouTube recommendation or a guarantee that your installed encoder supports them. Check the current YouTube stream setup and the codecs available in your Liquidsoap/FFmpeg build before going live. Liquidsoap’s current YouTube-specific output operators may be clearer than constructing a generic output.url call. Review the operator reference for your installed version and adapt the source, encoder, and endpoint accordingly. Liquidsoap 2.2.5 reference
Use an image or moving video
A still station image is operationally simple and is the visual approach demonstrated in the Liquidsoap book. Moving video is another possible presentation, but choose visuals only when you have rights to use them. The example does not establish that any particular station logo, album art, photograph, or video is licensed for a YouTube broadcast.

Start, monitor, and recover the stream
- Validate the configuration locally. Check that the installed Liquidsoap version accepts the source, mux, encoder, and output syntax, and that the required FFmpeg codecs are available.
- Start the Liquidsoap process. Keep it running on the machine or server hosting the configuration. Confirm that the radio source is producing audio and that the video source is available.
- Watch Live Control Room. Check YouTube’s ingest status and preview before starting the public broadcast. Follow the stream setup shown there if it reports a mismatch or connection issue.
- Monitor the process and YouTube Studio during the broadcast. A successful local process does not itself establish that YouTube is receiving or accepting the stream. If the stream stops, check Liquidsoap’s output and source status, then check YouTube Studio for stream and strike information.
Clear rights for the YouTube simulcast
An Indian station’s existing terrestrial-radio permissions do not automatically establish that it can retransmit the same material on YouTube. The Copyright Office’s copy of India’s Copyright Act addresses copyright in musical works and sound recordings and defines broadcast broadly to include communication to the public by wire or wireless means. The Copyright Rules’ Chapter VIII includes notice and royalty provisions associated with the statutory broadcast-licensing section, with separate notices for radio and television broadcasts. These provisions alone do not settle whether a particular station’s radio licence or statutory route covers its separate YouTube simulcast. Copyright Rules, 1957 Copyright Act, 1957
Before going live, confirm that your permissions cover the recordings, compositions, lyrics, performers, territory, and online platform use involved. Seek advice from the relevant rightsholders or qualified Indian counsel where needed. Troubleshoot common failures
