You can keep a YouTube livestream running while mid-roll ads are offered: YouTube serves ads to some viewers while viewers who are not served an ad continue watching. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, turn monetization on and choose automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-rolls. Scheduled mode lets you set a repeating interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes; it does not guarantee an ad at an exact clock time or to every viewer.
What an ad break does to a live stream
An ad break does not require ending or restarting the broadcast. YouTube says, “If no ad runs, viewers will continue to watch your live stream.” Viewers who are served an ad can rejoin when it ends or skip it. That means the stream can stay live, but you cannot promise uninterrupted content to every viewer, and YouTube does not guarantee that an ad will serve for every opportunity. YouTube Help describes automatic mid-rolls this way: “YouTube shows mid-roll ads to viewers at natural breakpoints during a live stream.” That describes YouTube’s aim, not a guarantee that every break will land between scenes or segments.
Set up live mid-roll ads in YouTube Studio

In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.

Open Edit → Monetization and turn monetization On.

Under live ad settings, select Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual. Choose scheduled intervals or automatic frequency settings as described below.

Save the settings. If you want to apply a default to future streams, monetized channels without rights management can set channel-level mid-roll defaults in Live Control Room settings. YouTube’s page says the default is On with automatic medium; channels with rights management currently do not have channel-level settings.
For stream setup context, YouTube says scheduled encoder and mobile streams can appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds, where viewers can opt into notifications. This does not establish a special 24/7 ad schedule. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.

Choose automatic, scheduled, or manual breaks

For a long-running stream, automatic mode is the lower-attention choice; scheduled mode is the predictable-interval choice; manual mode gives the operator control over individual insertions. None guarantees that all viewers will avoid an ad or that every opportunity will fill.
Pause automatic ads around an important moment
If you use automatic mode, select Delay ads in Live Control Room before a high-value moment. This pauses automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes; YouTube displays a five-second countdown before automatic ads resume. Manually placed breaks still display during the delay, so do not insert one if you intend to protect that moment from a manual break as well.

Side-by-side ads and manual controls
YouTube describes side-by-side mid-rolls as an option that can show an ad next to the stream with less disruption on eligible streams. It is not guaranteed for every stream. YouTube also says streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads.
For manual insertion, YouTube documents the Elgato Stream Deck plugin as an optional control. It is not needed to configure automatic ads or a scheduled interval, and YouTube does not describe it as a tool for preventing interruptions to every viewer.

What YouTube’s revenue figure does—and does not—mean
YouTube reported an over-20% average uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour in January 2024. The comparison was between channels that turned on live automatic mid-roll ads and channels that did not, across 207 countries. It is a historical average comparison, not a forecast or promised result for an individual channel. YouTube Help: Manage mid-roll ads in live streams.
Keep the broadcast running separately from ad settings
Ad controls decide how mid-rolls are offered; they do not themselves keep a source video playing continuously. For a 24/7 stream, confirm that your streaming method can sustain the broadcast and that your source content can be used. YouTube’s live ad instructions do not establish a separate 24/7 ad mode or a special clock-time scheduling feature. Before relying on a recurring stream, review the content and rights you have for every video, music track, and other included material; monetization controls do not establish permission to use it.
