To keep a creek and forest ambience video live on YouTube around the clock, send it through an encoder such as OBS or use a cloud service that loops an uploaded video. With OBS, create a stream in YouTube Studio, enter its server URL and stream key in the encoder, test the preview and upload connection, then start the broadcast. Plan for stream breaks: YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but its guidance does not guarantee the archive outcome for a longer continuous stream.
Choose the source and prepare your channel
Decide whether your ambience feed will come from a live camera and microphone, an original prerecorded video, or a mix. An encoder gives you flexibility to combine video, audio hardware, overlays, and other sources. YouTube supports several live methods; its encoder workflow is a practical fit for a prepared ambience program. See YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and setup guidance.
- Verify channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- Prepare rights-cleared material. Use recordings you made or material whose license permits livestreaming and archived playback. YouTube places responsibility for the necessary rights, including music rights, on the creator. Review its livestream terms and conditions.
- Choose an encoder. OBS is one software option. Its Knowledge Base covers setup, streaming, sources, filters, and audio. Exact controls can vary by OBS version, so follow the current interface and help material.
Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Follow the current prompts for its title, visibility, and other stream details.
- Open the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in Studio. - In OBS, add the video and audio sources you intend to broadcast. For a prerecorded ambience program, confirm that your chosen playback arrangement sends both picture and sound to the stream; do not assume a still image or muted desktop source is sufficient.
- Start the encoder’s preview or send the feed to YouTube’s preview in Live Control Room. Check the image, ambient sound, levels, and synchronization before starting the public broadcast.
- When the preview is correct, start the stream from the encoder and follow the Studio controls to take it live. Confirm the watch page is accessible and continue checking the stream after launch.
Test upload capacity and monitor the feed
The relevant network measure is outbound upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube recommends keeping total streaming bitrate within upload capacity with 20% headroom. For example, if the encoder’s total bitrate is 10 Mbps, the connection should have at least 12 Mbps of usable upload capacity under the conditions in which you plan to stream. Treat that as a planning calculation, not a guarantee: real upload performance can fluctuate.
- Run an advance test using the same encoder, sources, and network you will use for the long broadcast.
- Choose resolution and bitrate according to the output you are actually sending and YouTube’s current encoder guidance; there is no single setting that fits every source and connection.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview for dropped or degraded video, and listen for missing, distorted, or unexpectedly quiet audio.
- Check the watch page from another device or connection, and monitor the feed during the broadcast rather than assuming that a successful start means it will remain healthy.
YouTube’s live streaming tips cover previewing, accessibility, bandwidth, and monitoring. Its guidance does not specify a minimum computer processor, memory, or graphics card for this use. A dedicated computer or mini PC is optional, not a YouTube requirement; reliable networking, including a wired Ethernet connection where practical, can help avoid instability, but no particular router or internet provider is endorsed.

Plan stream breaks and archives
YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. A single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast is longer than that stated automatic-archive window, and YouTube’s guidance does not establish a guaranteed replay outcome for every longer stream. If you need reliable replays, plan shorter broadcast sessions and check the current Live Control Room behavior before relying on a specific archive result. Schedule breaks around a time when you can verify the next session’s preview and restart the encoder if needed.
Understand originality and monetization risk
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to livestreams. Its channel monetization policies identify repetitive or mass-produced videos as inauthentic content that is ineligible for monetization. A looped ambience clip is not assured approval: channel-level review and the originality of the work matter, and no particular production choice guarantees monetization. YouTube updated the policy terminology on July 15, 2025, from “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content.”

For a documentary-focused channel, consider using your own field recordings and shaping the broadcast as a deliberate piece rather than endlessly repeating a short clip. Keep documentation for licensed sound, and confirm that permissions cover both live transmission and any resulting replay.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not accept the stream: confirm the stream is created in Studio, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the channel meets live-stream eligibility. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- Preview is missing or unstable: check that OBS is sending the intended sources, then test upload capacity and reduce the output demands if the connection cannot sustain them. Keep the recommended upload headroom.
- Video plays without ambience audio: inspect the encoder’s selected audio source, mute state, and levels; confirm sound is present in the preview before going live.
- The stream stops or degrades later: monitor the broadcast and network instead of treating the initial successful start as proof of continuous operation. YouTube’s streaming advice includes advance testing and ongoing checks; see Streaming tips.
- No replay appears as expected: check the stream duration and current Studio archive behavior. YouTube’s stated automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, not a guarantee for a longer continuous stream.
