You also need a plan to restart FFmpeg and recover from network, input, machine, or power failures: a command alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
Before you start: prepare the YouTube broadcast and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to reach Live Control Room. Create or select the broadcast and its stream configuration. YouTube treats the incoming stream configuration and the live broadcast as related but distinct resources; the encoder sends media using the stream settings, while the broadcast represents the live event. - Copy the current server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Prefer the RTMPS URL when YouTube provides one. Use the exact values from the current configuration, not an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. Google’s RTMPS requirements specify the
rtmpsprotocol, a valid YouTube RTMPS ingestion server, and port 443. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide. - Treat the key like a password. Keep it out of screenshots, public scripts, repositories, and support posts. If sharing a command for help, replace the key with a placeholder such as
YOUR_STREAM_KEY; do not publish the real value.
YouTube may require the channel to be eligible for live streaming before you can create or start a broadcast. Check the current status in Live Control Room if the option is unavailable; requirements and account status are controlled by YouTube, not by FFmpeg.
Choose FFmpeg settings that match the video
For a straightforward SDR stream, H.264 video with AAC audio is a broadly supported starting point. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe every 2 seconds, and says the interval must not exceed 4 seconds. The guidance is platform-wide, not an India-specific internet-speed prescription. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current recommendations.
H.264 bitrate recommendations
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates, not guaranteed viewer quality or minimum upload-speed requirements. Select the row that matches both your output resolution and frame rate.

These recommendations come from YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. The same page also lists minimum rates; do not mistake those for its recommended targets. Add the audio bitrate when estimating total upload use, and test sustainable upload capacity from the actual encoder location with enough headroom for normal variation. YouTube advises testing the connection and choosing a quality it can reliably sustain.
Audio and image format
- For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. For 5.1, it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.
- For SDR, use Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth as specified by YouTube. Avoid adding HDR-specific settings unless your source and workflow actually require HDR.
- YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Codec and HDR support do not eliminate the need to verify that the installed FFmpeg build and your source workflow handle the chosen format.
Send a file to YouTube with FFmpeg
For a pre-recorded file named documentary.mp4 in the current directory, this example loops the file and sends SDR H.264 video and AAC audio to YouTube over RTMPS. Replace the server URL and key with the values from Live Control Room, and change the output size, frame rate, and bitrate to match your content and connection.

At 30 fps, -g 60 requests a 60-frame GOP—2 seconds—and the CBR-style bitrate options align the target and maximum video bitrate. The example uses H.264 at 1080p30’s recommended 5 Mbps video rate, but it does not scale or convert the input to 1080p. If the source is a different size or frame rate, add the appropriate filter or output options deliberately; inspect the file first with ffprobe. Ensure the installed FFmpeg includes libx264.

-re reads a file at its native playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible, and -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. The FLV muxer is used for RTMP/RTMPS delivery. FFmpeg option availability and behavior can vary by build; check ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -h on the machine you will use.
If your key is embedded in the command, it may be saved in shell history or visible to other local users. For longer-running use, keep secrets in an access-restricted configuration or environment mechanism appropriate to your operating system, and avoid logging the expanded URL.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Run the command while watching FFmpeg’s output for connection or encoder errors.
- In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube receives the signal and review stream-health messages.
- Test with representative motion and audio, not just a static frame or silence. Check that sound is present, levels are sensible, and the picture is not visibly corrupted.
- Observe the stream for long enough to catch buffering, bitrate instability, input problems, or local network interruptions before relying on it as a continuous feed.
- After making changes to the source, encoder settings, or network, repeat the test and verify stream health again.
YouTube’s guidance recommends a test that includes audio and movement similar to the intended content, followed by monitoring stream health and Live Control Room messages. Starting FFmpeg successfully does not by itself prove that the broadcast is healthy for viewers.

Keep FFmpeg running—and plan for failures
A 24/7 feed is an operations setup as much as an encoder command. FFmpeg can stop when its input ends or becomes unreadable, the process exits, the machine reboots, or the network drops. A loop handles repeated playback of a readable file; it does not repair every failure or promise a permanent connection. FFmpeg documents options related to reconnection, but their suitability depends on the input, protocol, and installed build. No single ISP, hosting provider, power system, or server is established as necessary for Indian channels. Test from the intended location, check that its network permits the required connection to YouTube, and decide whether backup connectivity or power makes sense for the risks you observe there. Do not assume a result measured in one Indian city or on one connection applies across the country.

That is a separate, more advanced route than sending one looped file with FFmpeg. Copyright and YouTube channel policies
Having permission to encode or stream a recording does not automatically make it eligible for every YouTube monetization or channel policy. Use material you own or are licensed to broadcast, including music, footage, and images; a live stream can still receive a copyright claim or be interrupted. Review the current rules and the status shown in YouTube Studio for your channel and content. Repeatedly looping a recording also does not, by itself, establish that a channel meets YouTube’s originality or monetization requirements.

RTMPS connection fails, times out, or reports an SSL error
- Confirm the URL begins with
rtmps://and is the current valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint copied from your configuration. - Confirm the destination uses port 443 and that the complete URL and key have not been truncated or altered.
- Google’s troubleshooting guidance identifies an RTMP-versus-RTMPS mismatch, the wrong port, and missing SNI handling as possible causes of SSL or connection errors. A timeout can occur when cleartext RTMP is sent to an endpoint expecting RTMPS. Check protocol, port, TLS support, and server-name handling before changing video bitrate.
YouTube receives a signal but reports poor stream health
- Check that the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate match YouTube’s recommendations and what the connection can sustain.
- Measure sustained upload at the encoder location, not only a brief peak result. Reduce output load if the connection cannot reliably carry the chosen stream.
- Check the encoder’s output and Live Control Room messages for dropped frames, audio issues, or unstable delivery, then retest with motion and sound.
The stream stops when the file ends or the process exits
- For a file loop, verify that
-stream_loop -1appears before the input and that the input file remains accessible and readable. - Check FFmpeg’s final log lines to distinguish an input, encoder, or network failure. A loop does not restart FFmpeg after the process exits; use a tested process supervisor or restart mechanism for your operating system.
- Test what happens after a network interruption, machine restart, or power loss. Do not assume reconnection flags or a supervisor will behave correctly without testing the actual workflow.
There is no audio, or the picture differs from the source
- Confirm the input contains the audio stream you expect, and check FFmpeg’s stream mapping and output logs.
- Confirm the selected output frame rate, pixel format, resolution, and codec are supported by your build and match the intended stream. The sample command does not resize the source.
- Use the stream-health preview and a representative test to catch problems before leaving the broadcast unattended.

No. The example loops a prerecorded file; camera capture requires a different input device and capture configuration.
