For a continuous stream, transfer your media to the VPS, configure a YouTube live stream, then run an encoder such as FFmpeg on the VPS to send the video to YouTube over RTMPS. To keep it running, the encoder process and its connection must remain active, and you need a way to recover if either stops.
What you need before starting
- A VPS with enough disk space for your media, sufficient processing capacity if you will encode video, and sustained outbound bandwidth for your chosen stream bitrate.
- A video file stored locally or already accessible to the VPS, plus a file-transfer method that works with your computer and server. The particular client and transfer steps depend on your operating systems and hosting provider.
- A YouTube channel eligible to start a live stream, with access to YouTube Live Control Room.
- An encoder on the VPS that can send a live audio-video stream to YouTube. FFmpeg is one option.
For bandwidth planning, account for the outbound stream bitrate continuously, not just the file’s size. A 10 Mbps stream, for example, needs the server to sustain that upload rate while streaming, in addition to overhead and other server traffic. Choose a VPS based on its actual network limits and policies; no provider or plan is established as suitable for every stream.
How to upload videos to a VPS and stream them to YouTube
1. Transfer the video file to the VPS
Use a file-transfer method supported by your computer and VPS. Put the video in a location the account that runs FFmpeg can read, and confirm the transfer completed before configuring the stream. Uploading stages the media on the server; the encoder will later read that file and send a live feed to YouTube.
2. Create a YouTube stream and get its RTMPS details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Under Stream settings, reveal the stream key and note the RTMPS server URL shown by YouTube. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, put it in a public script repository, or share it with anyone who should not control your stream.
- Use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming an ordinary RTMP address will work. RTMPS encrypts the connection to YouTube. Google’s ingestion requirements specify the
rtmpsprotocol, a valid server and path, and port 443. Encoder implementations also need to handle the server hostname for TLS SNI authentication.
Keep the server URL and stream key separate in your configuration where possible, and restrict access to any file containing the key. If the key is exposed, replace it in YouTube rather than continuing to use a compromised credential.

3. Install and check the encoder on the VPS
Install FFmpeg using the package or build supported by your VPS operating system. Confirm the executable is available and that the build supports the protocols and codecs you plan to use. Exact installation commands depend on the operating system and package source, so check the relevant official documentation for that environment.
FFmpeg documents this basic pattern for publishing a file to an RTMP server:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream

This illustrates real-time file input and live publishing; it is not a ready-to-run YouTube command. For YouTube, substitute the RTMPS endpoint and authentication arrangement appropriate to your encoder, ensure the output codecs are accepted, and configure looping and process supervision if you need continuous operation. Do not paste your real stream key into a public example or expose it in logs.

4. Set compatible output and test before going live
YouTube’s currently documented live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, the current table lists 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60; it lists the same respective rates for AV1/H.265 at those settings. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for the exact combination you intend to send.
Match the output to both the source and the VPS. If the file is already encoded in a compatible format, sending its existing streams may avoid a second lossy encode, provided the encoder and YouTube accept that stream configuration. If it is not compatible or needs resizing, frame-rate conversion, or other changes, encoding adds CPU or GPU load and should be tested on the VPS. The exact best command depends on the source file and server; do not assume copying streams is valid without checking their codecs and parameters.

Start a private or otherwise appropriate test in Live Control Room and inspect stream health and messages before relying on the setup. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the material you plan to stream. A static opening frame is not enough to confirm that documentary footage, narration, and music all behave correctly.
5. Keep the stream continuous
A VPS process does not survive every failure automatically. A long-running setup needs the media to loop as intended, the encoder to stay running, and a recovery plan for process exits, server restarts, network interruptions, and YouTube disconnects. Configure an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor to restart the encoder when appropriate, and monitor both the process and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Test restart behavior rather than assuming a restart will resume the broadcast correctly.
For API-based automation, Google distinguishes a liveStream resource, which carries audio-video settings, from a liveBroadcast, which represents an event/video. Its documented 24/7 use case keeps one broadcast ongoing while a second broadcast on the same stream is created and completed. That describes API resource behavior, not guaranteed VPS uptime or an uninterrupted encoder connection.

VPS versus an automated API workflow
| Approach | What it does | What you must manage |
|---|---|---|
| Manual encoder operation | You start an encoder on the VPS that reads a media file and publishes it to YouTube. | File availability, encoder settings, looping, process supervision, stream-key security, testing, and recovery. |
| API-based automation | You use YouTube Live Streaming API resources to coordinate streams and broadcasts; the API documentation describes a continuous-broadcast use case. | API integration, broadcast lifecycle, encoder operation, authentication, failure handling, and monitoring. The API example does not ensure the VPS or network stays up. |
Manual operation is simpler to understand for a single setup. API automation can coordinate broadcast lifecycle, but adds implementation and maintenance work. Neither removes the need for a working encoder and a reliable server connection.
What affects VPS sizing and cost
- Outbound bandwidth: Ensure the VPS can sustain the selected bitrate for the full duration, and review any provider caps, transfer allowances, or throttling policies.
- Compute: A file sent without video re-encoding typically places a different load on the server than live transcoding. Resolution changes, frame-rate conversion, or encoding can require substantially more CPU or GPU capacity; measure with your actual source and settings.
- Storage: Include the video files, any alternate versions, logs, and operational headroom. File size alone does not establish how much bandwidth or compute streaming will use.
- Operations: Consider backups, monitoring, recovery, and the time required to maintain the VPS and encoder. The reviewed official guidance does not establish provider-specific pricing or a universally suitable server size.
Troubleshooting a VPS YouTube stream
RTMPS or SSL connection errors
Recheck that you copied YouTube’s RTMPS URL and path correctly, that the encoder is making a TLS connection rather than cleartext RTMP, and that port 443 is available for outbound traffic. If TLS validation fails, check the hostname and whether the encoder handles SNI correctly.
Connection timeouts or repeated disconnects
Confirm the VPS has outbound network access to the ingestion endpoint and that the selected port is not blocked by server or network rules. Check whether the encoder process is still running and inspect its error output alongside YouTube’s stream-health messages. A process supervisor can restart an exited process, but it cannot repair a persistent network or configuration problem.

Unstable or poor video quality
Check the outgoing bitrate and compare it with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. If the VPS uplink cannot sustain it, lower the output quality or bitrate, then retest with representative movement and audio. Watch the live health indicators during the test rather than relying only on the encoder’s local status.
No audio, unsupported output, or unexpected playback
Inspect the source’s audio and video streams and verify the output uses a supported video and audio codec. If you are copying the source streams, confirm their parameters are compatible with the chosen YouTube settings; otherwise configure an encode and test its server load. Check playback in the Live Control Room before treating the stream as ready.
The stream stops after a VPS restart
Check that the encoder is configured to start after boot, that the media path is mounted and readable at startup, and that the stream key remains available to the service account. Test the entire recovery sequence, including how the YouTube broadcast is resumed, instead of assuming a process restart alone restores the live event.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Only stream documentary footage, narration, music, photographs, and other material you have the rights or permission to use. A live broadcast does not make copyrighted material safe to rebroadcast. Review YouTube’s current policies and any rights restrictions that apply to your content, and check the stream for claims or restrictions before building a recurring schedule.
