To run a prerecorded YouTube stream continuously from Linode, use an Ubuntu Linode as the always-on host, an encoder such as FFmpeg to read and loop media, YouTube Live Control Room’s ingest URL and stream key, and systemd to supervise the encoder after you disconnect from SSH. First make the channel eligible for live streaming, then match YouTube’s codec, bitrate, frame-rate and keyframe requirements, test the preview, and calculate outbound transfer before leaving it unattended. The exact FFmpeg package path, looping syntax and systemd directives vary by Ubuntu and package version, so validate those details against the current FFmpeg and systemd documentation on the image you deploy rather than copying an unverified recipe.
What do you need for a 24/7 Linode YouTube loop stream?
You need four layers working together: an eligible YouTube channel, authorized video and audio, a continuously running encoder on Linode, and a supervised connection to YouTube. Linode supplies the always-on computer; it does not itself create a YouTube event or grant rights to the media.
- YouTube account: the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16, according to YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance.
- Cloud host: an Ubuntu Linode with enough CPU, memory, disk and network capacity for your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate. Store the source files on the instance or on storage mounted reliably before starting the service.
- Encoder: an installed encoder process (commonly FFmpeg) that can decode the source, repeat it, encode the selected video and audio format, and publish continuously.
- YouTube event: a Live Control Room event with its current ingest URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password.
- Supervisor: systemd starts the encoder at boot, keeps it independent of an SSH terminal, and records status and logs for recovery.
Broadcast only video and audio for which you have permission. A live stream can still receive copyright claims, blocks or strikes even when the file was prerecorded.
How does the Linode-to-YouTube architecture work?
The data path is simple: the encoder reads a local file or playlist, produces a constant live feed, and sends it over RTMP or RTMPS to YouTube. YouTube’s Live Control Room authenticates that feed with the stream key and publishes the event according to its visibility and latency settings. systemd is not a streaming protocol; it is the process manager that starts and supervises the encoder.

Why systemd matters after you close SSH
An interactive shell ends when your SSH session ends, but a system service can run without that session. Configure systemd only after you can start the encoder manually and confirm that the preview works. The service should run as a dedicated, unprivileged account, use absolute paths, and have access to the media directory and its log destination.
What systemd cannot fix
systemd cannot repair a bad stream key, an unreadable file, a full disk, an exhausted transfer allowance, or an encoder that exits immediately because of an unsupported codec. Build checks for those layers instead of assuming that a restart policy makes a failed stream healthy.
How do you prepare an Ubuntu Linode?
- Choose the region and size. Consider where the source files and likely viewers are located, then size CPU for the selected encoder and resolution. A pre-encoded file may need little CPU, while real-time transcoding with a modern codec can need substantially more. Linode community guidance treats workload, viewer geography and transfer as sizing factors; it does not establish a current plan recommendation.
- Patch the image and create a service account. Apply Ubuntu security updates, create a non-root account for the stream, and restrict SSH to keys rather than exposing credentials in scripts. Keep the stream key out of shell history, public repositories and world-readable files.
- Install an encoder from the Ubuntu package source you intend to maintain. Package names, executable locations and supported libraries differ by Ubuntu release and repository. Confirm the installed binary path (for example, by checking which executable your package provides), then record that path for the future systemd unit.
- Upload a representative media sample. Check that the service account can read the file, that there is enough disk for the complete playlist, and that the audio track is present. A file that plays on your desktop can still fail on a headless server because of a missing decoder.
- Measure available egress. Note the encoder’s target bitrate and calculate monthly transfer before choosing a long billing period. Add overhead and any other traffic from the instance; the stream is not the only network consumer.
Do not place the stream key in a unit file committed to source control. Use a root-owned environment or credentials file with permissions that allow only the service account (and administrators) to read it, and ensure your logging configuration does not print the key.

How do you create the YouTube Live event and obtain the key?
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the event. Select the intended visibility (public, unlisted or private), audience declaration and archive behavior.
- In Stream settings, copy the current server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP carried over a TLS/SSL connection. If the interface hides the secure URL, use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS address.
- Store the URL and key in the protected configuration used by the encoder. Never paste a real key into a tutorial, screenshot, ticket or public log.
- Keep Live Control Room open while testing. Its preview and stream-health messages tell you whether YouTube is receiving data before you make the event public.
If you suspect that a key has leaked, reset it in Live Control Room and update the protected service configuration. A reset invalidates the old credential; restarting the encoder with the old key will fail authentication.
Which codec, resolution, bitrate and keyframe settings should you use?
Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for the exact combination of codec, frame rate and resolution. YouTube accepts H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second, with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.

| 480p, 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | Official YouTube encoder table, accessed 2026 |
These are encoder targets, not viewer-bandwidth statistics. Select the row matching your output and then verify the result in Live Control Room. H.264 generally offers the broadest hardware and software compatibility; H.265 and AV1 can reduce bitrate for a similar picture but may use more CPU and have less compatible decoding paths. Test the actual host load rather than assuming that a newer codec is cheaper to run.
Should you use RTMP or RTMPS?
Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it, because the transport is protected by TLS/SSL between the encoder and YouTube. RTMP can be useful when a particular encoder build lacks RTMPS support, but it does not provide that transport encryption. Neither protocol encrypts your source files at rest, and neither protects a stream key that you expose on the host.
What latency should you choose?
For a looped documentary, music or ambient channel with little audience interaction, normal latency is usually simpler. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering; choose a lower-latency mode only when near-real-time chat or interaction justifies the trade-off.
How do you configure the looping encoder?
First prove a short, manual run. The encoder must decode the source, repeat it or advance through a playlist, encode at the selected constant bitrate, insert keyframes at the chosen interval, encode compatible audio, and publish to the YouTube URL plus key. Exact option names and reconnect behavior depend on the FFmpeg version and build, so confirm every option in the documentation installed for your Ubuntu release.
Single-file loop
For one authorized file, configure the input to repeat indefinitely rather than stopping at end-of-file. Set an explicit output frame rate and resolution that match the YouTube table row you selected. Set video and audio bitrates, a two-second keyframe interval, and the RTMPS output URL. Keep the key outside the command line where process listings could reveal it; use the encoder’s supported secure configuration mechanism.

Playlist loop
For several files, create a playlist whose entries all have compatible dimensions, frame rates and audio characteristics, or normalize them before streaming. Configure the playlist to return to its first item after the last. A single damaged entry can terminate an otherwise healthy loop, so validate every file individually and watch the first complete cycle in the preview.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Distinguish an input loop from a network reconnect. Looping keeps producing media when a file ends; reconnect options determine whether the encoder retries after YouTube or the network closes the socket. Validate the reconnect flags for your encoder version and avoid a tight restart loop that can consume CPU or trigger rate limits. Let systemd provide the outer process restart only after the encoder’s own behavior is understood.
During the manual test, record the exact executable path, user, working directory, media path, environment file and output URL form that worked. Those values become the inputs to the service definition; do not assume that a command working in your shell has the same PATH or permissions under systemd.
How do you run the encoder as a systemd service?
Create a dedicated service unit only after the manual test succeeds. Because systemd directive semantics and FFmpeg paths were not validated for this guide, treat the following as a design checklist rather than a copy-paste unit:
- Unit metadata: describe the stream and order it after the network is considered online on your Ubuntu image.
- Service identity: run as the unprivileged stream account, set a working directory it can read, and use the absolute encoder path.
- Secrets: load the server URL and key from a protected environment or credentials file; do not put them in a world-readable unit or repository.
- Command: use the already-validated loop, codec, bitrate, keyframe, audio and RTMPS options. Quote paths containing spaces and make the playlist or source path explicit.
- Lifecycle: choose a restart policy and delay that avoid a rapid crash loop. A restart is useful for a transient exit, not for a permanently invalid key or unreadable file.
- Logging: send stdout and stderr to the journal or a controlled log file, set retention, and confirm that the encoder does not print credentials.
- Hardening: limit write access, avoid unnecessary capabilities, and ensure the service can write only where it needs to write temporary files or logs.
After creating the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions, start the service, inspect its status and journal output, and enable it for boot using the commands documented for your Ubuntu release. Then reboot during a maintenance window and verify that the stream returns without an SSH session. If you change the media path, environment file or unit, repeat the reload and restart sequence and check the journal for the new process.

How do you test a stream before leaving it unattended?
- Start with an unlisted or private event and confirm that YouTube shows a receiving preview.
- Watch representative motion, dark scenes, still images and every audio channel. Check for silence, clipping, aspect-ratio errors, dropped frames and visible encoder warnings.
- Observe Live Control Room’s stream-health messages for long enough to cover a file transition or playlist change.
- Confirm the public URL, visibility and archive setting match your plan. A healthy ingest feed can still be hidden by an incorrect event setting.
- Disconnect SSH, then check the service status and journal from a second administrative session. Finally, reboot the Linode in a maintenance window and confirm that systemd starts the encoder automatically.
YouTube specifically advises testing with representative audio and motion, checking the preview and monitoring health messages. Do not call a stream 24/7-ready merely because one short clip appeared online.
How much Linode transfer will a 24/7 stream use?
Estimate egress from the encoder’s actual bitrate: bits per second × seconds ÷ 8 = bytes. Multiply by the hours you expect to run, then add protocol overhead, audio, reconnect traffic, administration and any other services on the instance. For example, a 3 Mbps target is roughly 0.375 megabytes per second before overhead; multiply that rate by the seconds in your planned month to obtain a first estimate, then compare it with the current Linode/Akamai allowance for the exact plan and region.
Do not rely on historical allowances quoted in Linode community discussions; those examples are stale. Check the provider’s current transfer terms and monitor actual egress. If viewers are served by YouTube, your Linode generally uploads one encoder feed to YouTube rather than sending a separate copy to every viewer, but the feed still runs continuously and consumes outbound transfer.
What should you check when the loop stream fails?
| Symptom | Likely layer | Checks and fix |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Credentials, URL or route | Confirm the current ingest URL, reset-and-replace a suspect key, test outbound connectivity and inspect encoder logs for authentication or TLS errors. |
| Service exits immediately | Process or permissions | Run the same command as the service account, verify the absolute executable path, media permissions, working directory and codec support, then read the journal. |
| Video freezes at the first file | Input or loop syntax | Play the file through its end manually, validate the loop or playlist option for your FFmpeg version, and test each playlist entry separately. |
| Audio missing or distorted | Audio stream or encoder settings | Inspect the source audio track, select AAC or MP3 as supported by YouTube, set a stable sample rate and bitrate, and watch the preview during a transition. |
| Dropped frames or buffering | CPU, bitrate or route | Compare CPU load and encoder warnings with the selected resolution and codec; lower output complexity or bitrate within YouTube’s table, and investigate packet loss. |
| Stream stops after network interruption | Reconnect policy | Validate encoder reconnect options, then use a measured systemd restart delay. Check whether the event or key changed while the process was offline. |
| Disk fills over time | Logs or temporary files | Set journal/log retention, remove obsolete uploads, and ensure the encoder is not writing a growing capture or error file. |
| Works manually but not at boot | systemd environment | Use absolute paths, set the working directory and environment file explicitly, order startup after networking, and test after a reboot. |
How do you maintain and secure the service?
- Rotate the YouTube key if it appears in a log, ticket, screenshot or shell history.
- Patch Ubuntu and the encoder during a planned interruption, then recheck the preview and health messages.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk, outbound transfer and journal errors; a process that is running is not necessarily publishing valid media.
- Keep a known-good copy of the service configuration without embedding the secret, so recovery does not depend on an undocumented shell command.
- Revalidate bitrate, codec support and YouTube’s current ingest guidance when changing resolution, frame rate or encoder version.
- Review copyright and platform policy for every new video or music track before adding it to the loop.

What is the practical decision?
Linode plus Ubuntu and systemd is appropriate when you want control over the encoder, files and operating system and are prepared to maintain networking, security, transfer and recovery. The dependable sequence is eligibility, authorized media, a validated manual encoder run, a protected key, a supervised service, a YouTube preview test and ongoing monitoring. If maintaining that stack is the unwanted part, StreamNeo provides the cloud loop in three steps and a free first day without requiring a machine to stay on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I loop a YouTube video that I did not create?
Only when your licence or permission covers both the video and every audio element for public live rebroadcast. A video being publicly viewable on YouTube does not grant a separate right to redistribute it in a continuous live stream.
Will systemd keep streaming if YouTube changes the event?
No. systemd can restart the encoder process, but it cannot update an expired event, a reset stream key or a changed ingest URL. Keep those values in protected configuration and update them whenever Live Control Room changes.
Is a prerecorded loop eligible for YouTube monetization?
Eligibility and monetization are separate decisions. YouTube may review repetitive or reused material under its current policies, so check the channel’s monetization rules and ensure the stream adds rights-cleared, original value rather than assuming that being live makes a loop eligible.
How can I estimate storage for a playlist on Ubuntu?
Add the byte sizes of every source file, then leave free space for Ubuntu updates, logs, temporary files and replacement uploads. A playlist that fits today can still fail later if journal retention or new media consumes the remaining disk.
