Choose the rotation and final frame shape from the footage itself: rotation changes orientation, but it does not automatically create both portrait and landscape versions.
Decide what the finished frame should look like
First inspect the recording and decide whether it is actually sideways, whether the intended live composition is portrait or landscape, and how much of the room must remain visible. A quarter-turn swaps the image’s effective width and height. It does not decide how the result should be framed for YouTube.
- Rotate only when needed. Camera orientation metadata and recording conventions vary. If the source already displays upright, an extra transpose will make it wrong.
- Choose the target canvas deliberately. Portrait framing can suit a mobile-first presentation; landscape can retain more of a room’s width and context. These are composition trade-offs, not guarantees about reach or recommendations.
- Choose fit, crop, or padding. Fitting the whole image inside the target canvas preserves its proportions but may leave bars. Cropping fills the canvas but can remove room details. Do not stretch a wide room into a narrow frame.
Preview the complete result before going live. Check that doors, windows, text, and room geometry are upright and that the framing does not discard useful details.
Build a single-output FFmpeg command
This example rotates clockwise, fits the image within a portrait 1080×1920 canvas without stretching, and pads any unused space. It is an adaptable example, not a tested command or a guarantee that every FFmpeg build includes libx264.

Do not copy an example key or expose a real key in a public command, screenshot, or log. Confirm how your encoder expects the URL and stream name to be combined.
Adjust direction and framing
transpose=clockrotates a quarter-turn clockwise; usetranspose=cclockfor the opposite direction. Remove the filter if the source is already upright.- For another target shape, change both canvas dimensions in
scaleandpad. A landscape canvas might be 1920×1080; select dimensions that match the intended final composition. - The example fits and pads. If you use a crop instead, review the crop for clipped windows, room edges, signs, and other useful details.
Map streams and audio intentionally
For production use, inspect the input with ffprobe, then explicitly map the intended video and audio streams. If audio comes from a separate input, provide that input and map it deliberately. If the recording has no audio, supply or map an appropriate audio input; missing audio can appear as a stream-health issue. A video filter requires decoding and re-encoding, so -c:v copy cannot be used for the rotated video.

Match encoding to YouTube’s current ingest guidance
YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and supports H.264, H.265, or AV1. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframe spacing no longer than four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted option. Select the bitrate for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one number as universal.

These are YouTube’s recommended ingest rates, not a guarantee that a particular connection or recording can sustain them. Test upload capacity and select a rate your connection can reliably provide. Camera movement and fine architectural detail can make compression artifacts conspicuous, so inspect the Live Control Room preview using representative motion.

YouTube’s guidance gives stereo audio as 128 Kbps at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. The command’s audio options reflect those figures. For a 30 fps H.264 output, an illustrative starting point might include -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -g 60; this is not a universal bitrate recommendation. YouTube’s table specifies other rates for different codecs and resolutions, and FFmpeg encoder behavior varies by build. Configure rate control appropriately for CBR and check the resulting stream-health report.
Get the live ingest details without exposing the key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the intended live stream and use the ingest address and stream name/key shown for that stream. Do not reuse a key from an unrelated setup without confirming it is the right one.
- Set the FFmpeg destination using those current values. Keep the key out of public examples, screen captures, and shared logs.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status before the event.
The YouTube Live Streaming API distinguishes stream configuration, such as ingestion type, address, resolution, and frame rate, from the broadcast resource. Its health status can report configuration issues; use the reported issue to guide diagnosis rather than assuming rotation is the cause.

One orientation or two
A single filtered FFmpeg output produces one encoded feed in one orientation and frame shape. Rotation does not create a simultaneous second feed. If you need both portrait and landscape, configure the corresponding outputs and stream setup explicitly, then inspect each preview and composition. YouTube’s vertical-live material describes encoder-controlled vertical output and a third-party dual-stream workflow, but available options and interface details can change. Check the current Live Control Room setup rather than assuming a particular channel has a specific dual-stream option.
For property footage, make separate framing decisions for each output. A crop that works for a portrait room view may remove too much context in landscape, or vice versa.

Test before the property tour
- Run the full command with representative footage, camera movement, and audio—not just a still frame.
- Check that the result is upright, correctly proportioned, and framed as intended; confirm that no important room detail is clipped.
- Confirm that YouTube receives video and audio and that the preview looks acceptable at the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Review stream health and resolve any reported codec, bitrate, keyframe, frame-rate, or resolution issue before the live event.
Troubleshoot common failures
