To bring a YouTube ambient stream back after a power cut, configure each link in the recovery chain: the PC must power on when electricity returns, Windows must launch OBS, OBS must request streaming, and the network must be ready. YouTube’s auto-start setting controls whether an encoder can start a broadcast; it cannot turn on the PC or launch OBS. A UPS may bridge a short outage, but it cannot keep a stream running beyond its load-specific battery runtime.
How automatic recovery works
A restart is not a single setting. The computer, streaming software, internet connection, and YouTube broadcast each have to be ready in sequence. If any link fails, the stream may remain offline even after power returns.
- Restore power to the computer: firmware must be configured to power on after AC power returns.
- Launch OBS: Windows must start OBS without someone logging in and opening it manually.
- Request the stream: OBS must be set to begin streaming, and the relevant YouTube broadcast must permit encoder-triggered auto-start.
- Wait for the network: the router and internet connection must be available when OBS attempts to connect.
Configure the PC to power on when electricity returns
Look in the motherboard firmware (BIOS or UEFI) for a setting commonly named Restore AC Power Loss, AC Power Recovery, or similar. ASUS ROG describes its Restore AC Power Loss function as restoring system operation and powering the computer on automatically when power reconnects after a failure. The menu name, location, and availability vary by motherboard, so follow the documentation for your own PC or motherboard rather than assuming the ASUS menu applies to every machine. Choose the option that powers the computer on after AC returns, then save the firmware change. If you cannot find the setting, consult the manufacturer’s documentation; not every system exposes the same control. This setting only handles power restoration. It does not start Windows applications or reconnect OBS to YouTube.

Set Windows to launch OBS and request streaming
An OBS Project community discussion describes adding --startstreaming to the OBS executable in a shortcut, then placing that shortcut in the Windows Startup folder or using Task Scheduler. This is community guidance, not an official guarantee that every Windows and OBS configuration will recover unattended. See the OBS Project forum discussion.
- Create an OBS shortcut: make a shortcut to the OBS executable, or edit an existing shortcut.
- Add the startup argument: in the shortcut’s target, append
--startstreamingafter the executable path. Preserve the path and separate the argument with a space. If the path contains spaces, keep it inside its existing quotation marks and put the argument after the closing quote. - Choose how Windows starts it: place the shortcut in the Windows Startup folder, or configure a Task Scheduler task to launch it at startup. Task Scheduler can be useful when you need a delay or specific launch conditions.
- Test the actual restart: verify that Windows starts, OBS opens with the intended scene and sources, and the stream begins without manual intervention.
OBS may start before the router or internet connection is ready. The OBS forum discussion warns that an early failed connection attempt may not recover automatically. If that happens, try a delayed launch or a scheduled retry/check for network availability, then test the full sequence again. A startup shortcut by itself does not guarantee a successful reconnect.

Check YouTube’s encoder auto-start setting
YouTube Help explains that auto-start and auto-stop settings let a broadcast be started or stopped from the encoder. Check the settings for the specific broadcast and make sure its auto-start behavior is suitable for OBS to start it. YouTube’s Reuse settings option copies these choices, so verify them when creating a reused broadcast. The control does not power on your PC or open OBS. Use a UPS only for the outage duration it can cover
A UPS can provide backup power during a short interruption, but its runtime depends on the connected load and battery condition. A community participant in a discussion about 24/7 streaming mentioned using an APC battery backup; that is an individual report, not a tested recommendation or evidence of a particular runtime. Before choosing a UPS, compare its supported output and runtime at the actual load, battery replacement and service options, and whether it can power both the PC and the network equipment. The available information does not establish a particular UPS model for India or a runtime that would keep a given stream online. A UPS can help ride through some short cuts; it does not replace the power-restoration and startup steps for a longer outage.
Test recovery before relying on it
After configuring the system, test the complete chain in a controlled way. Confirm the stream’s public status rather than treating an open OBS window as proof that viewers can see the broadcast.
