How to Release a Content ID Claim on Your Own YouTube Livestream

A Content ID claim on an archived livestream is handled in YouTube Studio. Review the match, then dispute only with a valid rights basis or remove the matched segment if you accept the claim.

If your archived YouTube livestream has a Content ID claim, open YouTube Studio, review the claimed segment, and dispute it only if you have a valid basis—such as the necessary rights, a relevant copyright exception, or a mistaken match. If the match is accurate and you do not want to challenge it, use an available Studio editing tool to remove or replace the matched material. A claim on an archived replay is different from a live broadcast being interrupted.

First, tell a replay claim from a live interruption

YouTube says Content ID claims on a livestream are made after the broadcast ends, if you choose to archive the video. A temporary interruption during the broadcast is a separate issue: YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may show a warning, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the content remains. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams

If the broadcast was interrupted, check the YouTube Studio dashboard for strikes and any live-stream restrictions. If you have licensed the material, ask the rights owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. YouTube notes that a license alone may not prevent a live interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted.

Review the claim on the archived livestream

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
  2. Select the Videos tab and locate the archived livestream.
  3. In the Restrictions column, open the claim details—currently shown in desktop Help as See details.
  4. Review the claimed content and timestamps under Content used. Check whether the identified music or footage actually appears in the replay and whether the claim affects the whole video or a particular segment.

Studio’s available actions can vary by device and by claim. On the current desktop route described in YouTube Help, the dispute option is under Content used → Take action → Dispute. YouTube Help: Dispute a copyright claim

Choose the right response

Situation What to consider Possible next step
The match appears mistaken, or you have the necessary rights You need a defensible reason and should be confident in it. The claimant reviews the dispute; YouTube does not determine ownership in this process. Submit an accurate dispute through the claim details.
You rely on a copyright exception Exceptions such as fair use are fact-specific. YouTube says automated systems cannot decide fair use; only a court can make that determination. Dispute only if you have a sound basis for your position.
The claimed material is present and you do not want to challenge the claim Removing or replacing the matched portion may be preferable if you do not need to preserve it. Check whether Studio offers Erase song/mute, Trim out segment, or Replace song.
The claim blocks the video and you are considering an appeal An appeal can move faster, but if rejected it can lead to a copyright removal request and, if that request is valid, removal of the video and a strike. Escalate only if you are confident in your rights basis.

Giving credit to the copyright owner, owning a copy of a song or video, or choosing not to monetize does not by itself establish a valid reason to dispute. See YouTube Help: Fair use on YouTube.

How to dispute an archived livestream claim

  1. In the claim details, choose Take action, then Dispute.
  2. Select the reason that accurately describes your basis: for example, you have all necessary rights, a relevant copyright exception applies, or the match is an error. Follow the prompts and provide the requested explanation.
  3. Review the information carefully before submitting. Do not select a reason that does not fit your circumstances.
  4. Monitor the claim status in Studio while the claimant reviews it.

The claimant has 30 days to respond to an initial dispute. They may release the claim, reinstate it, submit a copyright removal request, or let it expire by not responding within that period. If the claim is reinstated, you may be eligible to appeal; eligibility and available actions depend on the claim.

Appeal only when the rights case is strong

After a rejected initial dispute, an eligible creator may appeal. The claimant has seven days to respond to an appeal. For a blocking claim, YouTube may offer Escalate to Appeal, which skips the initial dispute stage and may resolve the matter sooner. That route carries greater risk: if the claimant rejects the appeal, they can submit a copyright removal request. If valid, that request can remove the replay and result in a copyright strike. YouTube’s initial dispute and appeal are reviewed by the claimant, not by YouTube as an ownership referee. YouTube Help: Dispute a copyright claim

Remove matched material instead of disputing

If the claim is accurate and you are willing to change the replay, return to the claim details and check the available editing actions. Depending on the claim, Studio may offer Erase song or mute, Trim out segment, or Replace song. Availability varies. YouTube says the claim is automatically removed if the claimed content is successfully removed by the edit. Confirm the edit completed and check the claim status in Studio rather than assuming that selecting an action cleared it. YouTube Help: Remove claimed content from videos

What happens to revenue while a claim is disputed?

YouTube’s monetization guidance says that when you dispute within five days of the claim, revenue is held starting from the claim date. If you dispute later, revenue is held starting from the date you dispute. Held earnings are paid to the appropriate party after the claim is resolved; this describes YouTube’s stated process, not a guaranteed payout date. Revenue data may not appear in Analytics while a claim is active. If the claim is released, YouTube says the data is added later, generally between the 10th and 20th of a later month. YouTube Help: Monetization during Content ID disputes

Common problems and what to check

  • You cannot find a dispute button: Open the archived video’s claim details in Studio and check the available actions. The interface and options vary by device and claim; the desktop Help route is Content → Videos → Restrictions → See details → Content used → Take action.
  • The live broadcast stopped, but there is no replay claim: Check the Studio dashboard for live-stream restrictions or strikes. Live matching and interruption happen during the broadcast; an archived-video Content ID claim is a separate post-stream process.
  • You have a license, but the live stream was still interrupted: Ask the rights owner whether your channel has been added to their Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a license may not by itself prevent interruption.
  • The claimant rejects your dispute: Check whether Studio offers an appeal and whether you can support your rights basis. An appeal has escalation risks, particularly on a blocking claim.
  • You edited the video, but the claim remains: Verify that the edit finished successfully and that the claimed portion was actually removed or replaced. YouTube says successful removal automatically clears the claim; if the claim remains, review the current status and available options in Studio.
