YouTube Live Keeps Reconnecting on Ubuntu: Check OBS Logs, System Logs, and RTMPS

Match OBS reconnect timestamps with Ubuntu journal messages and YouTube Live Control Room health errors to identify whether the issue is the network, encoder, or RTMPS setup.

If OBS keeps disconnecting and reconnecting while streaming to YouTube from Ubuntu, first match the failure time in the OBS log, Ubuntu’s system journal, and YouTube Live Control Room. Reconnects often indicate an unstable route to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain, but the symptom alone does not identify the cause. Check the evidence before changing settings.

What a reconnect usually means

The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide (dated September 30, 2024) says: “If you experience dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming, there is a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server.” Dropped frames can lead OBS to disconnect if enough are lost. That points toward the path between your computer and the ingest server, or a bitrate beyond what that path can reliably carry; it does not prove OBS itself is defective.

YouTube’s own diagnostics also distinguish encoder or source problems from outbound connectivity problems. Treat the OBS log, Ubuntu logs, and YouTube’s stream-health messages as complementary evidence rather than assuming that Ubuntu, RTMP, or OBS is automatically at fault.

Collect logs for the same time window

Open the OBS session log

  1. In OBS, choose Help → Log Files, then open the current or previous log for the affected session. This in-app route is preferable to relying on a fixed file location.
  2. A common Linux location is ~/.config/obs-studio/logs, but packaging can change it; Flatpak, Snap, and other builds may store logs elsewhere. If that directory is missing, use the OBS menu.
  3. Note the disconnect time and timezone. In the log, inspect the surrounding entries for “Disconnected,” “Reconnecting,” RTMP send errors, timeouts, dropped-frame counters, and output stopping. Remove or redact stream keys and other credentials before sharing a log publicly.

OBS’s Linux log-location discussion supports the common path, not a guarantee that every installation uses it.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Query Ubuntu’s journal and kernel messages

For a recent window, run:

journalctl --since "30 minutes ago" --no-pager
journalctl -k --since "30 minutes ago" --no-pager

The first command displays journal entries available to your user; -k narrows the query to kernel messages. To focus on a known incident, replace the relative time with precise --since and, if useful, --until values. Compare timestamps with OBS and look for network-link down/up events, driver resets, firmware errors, suspend/resume, or system overload indicators. A matching timestamp is a clue, not proof that a particular message caused the reconnect.

Ubuntu documents journalctl queries in its Jammy manual page; behavior and logging configuration may differ by Ubuntu release.

Check traditional log files if present

Ubuntu commonly uses /var/log/syslog for general system messages and /var/log/kern.log for kernel messages. Inspect the incident window with a pager or search tool, for example sudo less /var/log/syslog or sudo grep 'Oct 3 14:20' /var/log/kern.log, adjusting the date and time format to match your logs. These files may be absent or configured differently. An empty or missing file does not establish that no system event occurred; check the journal as well. See Ubuntu’s Linux log files guide.

Test Ubuntu’s network path one change at a time

  • Use wired Ethernet as a comparison. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming because Wi-Fi may be unstable. If a cable or port is suspected, test another one; a cable will not fix an incorrect RTMPS URL, an encoder-health error, a congested ISP route, or a faulty router or network adapter.
  • Reduce bitrate to a sustainable level. Compare against stable upload capacity, not just a speed-test peak. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a general starting rule of thumb, not a YouTube guarantee. YouTube likewise advises choosing quality that the connection can reliably sustain.
  • Temporarily isolate VPN or security-software interference. OBS identifies VPNs and security software as possible sources of interference. Test briefly and restore protection afterward; make a narrow application exception only if evidence supports it.
  • Try another available ingest server. If your encoder exposes that option, test it as a separate change. A modem or router restart may help when there is broader connectivity trouble; persistent problems after local checks are a reason to contact your ISP.
  • Do not copy Windows-only OBS instructions into Ubuntu. OBS’s guide marks network optimization and TCP pacing as Windows-only. IP-family and bind controls may vary by Linux build, so do not assume every option appears in your Ubuntu interface.

Changing one variable at a time helps reveal which test affects the failure. Dynamic bitrate may trade image quality for fewer drops, but it does not repair the underlying connection.

Check YouTube stream health and RTMPS

Use Live Control Room’s health messages

Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and review reported errors for the same timestamps as the OBS log. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance and stream health status catalog cover issues including insufficient incoming video, bitrate, codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and backup-stream configuration. Follow the message YouTube actually reports rather than changing multiple encoder settings at once.

YouTube’s error guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio for standard live ingestion and warns about primary/backup stream mismatches. For encoder settings, consult YouTube’s troubleshooting page and its stream settings guidance; use the recommendation relevant to the error shown for your stream.

Verify the current secure ingest endpoint

If OBS logs show SSL, certificate, or timeout errors, copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key from the stream settings in Live Control Room instead of relying on an old saved endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its RTMPS help guidance notes that port 443 may need to be explicit for SSL errors; the RTMPS ingestion requirements specify port 443 and TLS, and explain that the server hostname is required for SNI authentication. Confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS.

A stale stream key is a separate possibility, particularly when the encoder reports an error immediately on startup. YouTube recommends copying the current key when the encoder reports a start error; do not treat key replacement as a cure for dropped frames during an already-established stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that loops uploaded documentaries or other recordings around the clock, StreamNeo is a different approach from diagnosing an OBS connection: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay running at home. It is for uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.

  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, at one flat price per slot; no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
