You cannot currently mirror Netflix from an iPhone to a TV through AirPlay or iPhone Screen Mirroring. Netflix blocks or does not support that playback route, which commonly produces a black screen. Use Netflix’s in-app Cast button with a supported target, open Netflix directly on the TV or streaming device, or connect the iPhone with a compatible HDMI video adapter.
Can you AirPlay Netflix from an iPhone?
No. Netflix states that AirPlay and Screen Mirroring are not supported for Netflix playback. Apple’s general AirPlay feature can mirror an iPhone to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible television, but Netflix is a separate compatibility decision. Selecting Control Center → Screen Mirroring may work for other apps yet leave Netflix black or unable to start.
Netflix’s explanation and black-screen troubleshooting are documented at Netflix Help Center. Apple’s general AirPlay instructions are at Apple Support.
The easiest solution: run Netflix on the TV
If your television or streaming player already has the Netflix app, use that app and its remote. This avoids phone discovery, backgrounding, Wi-Fi isolation and AirPlay restrictions. Netflix lists supported smart TVs and streaming platforms, including Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV/Stick and Chromecast devices, at Netflix’s supported-devices page.

How to cast Netflix from an iPhone
Netflix casting is different from mirroring. The television plays the video while the iPhone acts as a controller for playback, seeking, subtitles and audio. The entire iPhone screen does not appear on the TV.
Check these requirements first
- Use an iPhone or iPad running iOS/iPadOS 16 or later, as specified by Netflix for mobile casting.
- Use a Netflix plan that supports casting. Netflix identifies Standard and Premium plans as eligible; the viewing experience with ads does not support mobile casting or mirroring.
- Use a target on Netflix’s current supported list: Chromecast (3rd generation or older) without a physical remote, Google Nest Hub, or select cast-enabled Vizio and Compal TVs.
- Put the iPhone and target on the same local Wi-Fi network.
- Allow Netflix to find devices on the network: Settings → Netflix → Local Network.
- Install the current Netflix app and sign in.
Netflix’s current compatibility and permission guidance is at Cast device or Cast icon isn’t showing and Cast or mirror Netflix from a mobile device.
Cast step by step
- Turn on the television and compatible Cast target.
- Connect the iPhone and target to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Netflix and sign in if necessary.
- Tap the Cast icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select the television or Cast device.
- Choose a film or episode and tap Play.
If successful, playback begins on the TV and the iPhone becomes a remote. Netflix’s list is narrower than the broader universe of smart TVs and Google streaming products. A television being “smart,” AirPlay-compatible or Google TV-based does not by itself guarantee that the Netflix iPhone Cast icon will appear.

How Chromecast and Google TV differ
Netflix’s current iPhone-casting help page specifically lists Chromecast third generation or older. It does not mean every newer Chromecast-branded product, Chromecast with Google TV, or Google TV Streamer accepts Netflix casting from an iPhone.
For a newer Google TV device with a physical remote, open Netflix on the device itself. Google’s setup requirements for iPhones are available at Google Support, and Google TV Streamer information is at Google TV Help; those general requirements do not override Netflix’s separate casting policy.
How to connect an iPhone to a TV with HDMI
A wired connection is the practical fallback when the TV has no Netflix app, wireless discovery fails, or the network is a hotel, dorm or guest network.
iPhone with a Lightning port
You need an Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter, an HDMI cable and an unused HDMI input. Netflix identifies Apple adapter model numbers A1438 and A1621 as supported Lightning adapters; a cheap or unsupported clone can fail during protected playback.

- Open Netflix on the iPhone and start the title.
Apple’s product page is Lightning Digital AV Adapter. Model support is not a universal guarantee for every resolution, iPhone, cable or TV.
iPhone with USB-C
Use a USB-C video adapter with HDMI output, or a USB-C/Thunderbolt connection when the display accepts video over USB-C. The cable and adapter must carry video; a USB-C connector alone does not prove that an iPhone model supports display output. Netflix references high-resolution USB video, USB 3.1 or later, and HDCP 2.2 for USB-C connections. Apple’s starting point is the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter.
Check the technical specifications for your exact iPhone model before buying. For HDMI televisions, connect the adapter directly to the TV where possible rather than routing it through a receiver or soundbar.
Wired playback troubleshooting
- Confirm the TV is on the correct HDMI input.
- Disconnect and reconnect the adapter and try another HDMI port.
- Try another HDMI cable.
- Connect the iPhone directly to the television, bypassing an AV receiver or sound system.
- Check that the adapter and display support the required copy-protection standard, including HDCP 2.2 where applicable.
- Restart the iPhone and TV, or test the adapter on another display.
Video format differences can also produce bars around downloaded or streamed content. Do not treat a black screen as proof that AirPlay needs a different setting; Netflix’s unsupported AirPlay route is the more likely cause.

- Use the Lightning Digital AV Adapter with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with Lightning connector.
- The Lightning Digital AV Adapter supports mirroring of what is displayed on your device screen — including apps, presentations, websites, slideshows, and more — to your HDMI-equipped TV, display, projector, or other compatible display in up to 1080p HD.
- It also outputs video content — movies, TV shows, captured video — to your big screen in up to 1080p HD.
- Simply attach the Lightning Digital AV Adapter to the Lightning connector on your device and then to your TV or projector via an HDMI cable (sold separately).
- Requires an HDMI cable (sold separately) for connection to your TV or projector. Supports both video and audio output.
Fix a missing Cast icon or failed connection
- Confirm the target. Compare it with Netflix’s current list rather than assuming any AirPlay TV, Roku or Google device is eligible.
- Confirm the plan. Netflix says the ad-supported viewing experience does not allow mobile casting or mirroring.
- Update the iPhone and app. Netflix specifies iOS/iPadOS 16 or later for casting.
- Enable Local Network. Go to Settings → Netflix → Local Network and turn it on.
- Check network isolation. Guest Wi-Fi, enterprise networks, VPNs, mesh isolation and separate network names can prevent discovery even when both devices show the same internet connection.
- Wake and restart the target. Netflix recommends fully powering off the Cast-compatible device for about 15 seconds, then turning it on again.
- Use direct playback. If the device has a Netflix app and remote, open Netflix there instead of continuing to troubleshoot phone casting.
- Switch to HDMI. A supported wired adapter avoids local-network discovery entirely.

| What you own | Best method | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Smart TV with Netflix | Open Netflix on the TV | Most reliable and requires no phone-to-TV discovery. |
| Apple TV | Open Netflix on Apple TV | AirPlay mirroring is not a Netflix playback solution. |
| AirPlay-compatible TV only | Use the TV’s Netflix app, supported Cast if listed, or HDMI | AirPlay capability alone does not make Netflix compatible. |
| Older supported Chromecast or listed Cast TV | Netflix app Cast icon | Convenient iPhone control when the target is on Netflix’s list. |
| Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer | Open Netflix with the device remote | Do not assume newer remote-equipped products support iPhone Netflix casting. |
| Roku or Fire TV | Open Netflix on the device | These platforms are intended to run Netflix directly. |
| TV without apps | Compatible iPhone HDMI adapter | Works without a streaming box, provided the iPhone and adapter support video. |
| Hotel, dorm or isolated guest Wi-Fi | HDMI or direct TV app | Restricted networks commonly block device discovery. |
Should you buy a streaming device or adapter?
Buy hardware to run Netflix reliably, not to obtain a Netflix AirPlay receiver. If your TV already has a supported Netflix app, buying another device is unnecessary. If it does not, a Roku, Apple TV or Google TV streamer supplies a remote-controlled Netflix app; an HDMI adapter is better when you need a wired connection or cannot use the local network. Buying any device also requires a separate Netflix subscription.
Current product information is available from Apple TV 4K, Roku Streaming Players, Roku Streaming Stick 4K and Google TV products. Prices and promotions change by country and date, so check the live store page before purchasing.
What not to rely on
- Do not use Control Center’s Screen Mirroring as the Netflix method.
- Do not assume every smart TV or Chromecast-branded device accepts iPhone casting.
- Do not buy an Apple TV solely to mirror Netflix; its value is direct app playback and the wider Apple TV platform.
- Do not assume a charge-only USB-C cable or an unverified Lightning adapter will carry protected video.
- Do not use screen-recording or “mirroring” apps advertised as ways around Netflix playback controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Netflix black while other AirPlay apps work?
Netflix separately blocks or does not support AirPlay playback. Use the Netflix app on the TV or streamer, Netflix’s supported Cast route, or a compatible HDMI connection.

Can I cast Netflix to any Roku from an iPhone?
Netflix’s current iPhone Cast list does not make every Roku an eligible target. Open Netflix on the Roku with its remote instead.
Does Netflix with ads support iPhone casting?
Netflix says mobile casting or mirroring is unavailable with the viewing experience with ads.
Do I need Wi-Fi when using an HDMI adapter?
The HDMI video link itself does not require TV-to-iPhone Wi-Fi, although Netflix playback on the iPhone still needs the internet unless the title is available for offline playback. Downloads do not remove Netflix’s display and protection limitations.
Can an AirPlay TV receive Netflix without Apple TV?
Not through AirPlay. Use the television’s own Netflix app, a supported Netflix Cast target, or HDMI.
