Lower the stream’s encoded bitrate first: it is the most direct way to reduce outbound data from a VPS. Then check whether a lower resolution or frame rate still keeps text, clock digits, and other details legible. Estimate the resulting monthly transfer before changing settings, and test the live stream for image quality, dropped frames, and platform health.
What uses bandwidth in a 24/7 VPS stream?
In a typical setup, the VPS sends one encoded video feed to the platform’s ingest server. The stream’s bitrate determines most of that outbound transfer. With a constant-rate feed, the VPS upload is broadly similar whether a few people or many people watch; the platform handles viewer delivery. That is different from self-hosted distribution, where serving viewers can create additional traffic.
Actual provider metering may also include protocol overhead, reconnects, and other VPS traffic. Check how your provider measures outbound transfer and what happens when you reach the plan limit; there is no universal VPS allowance or billing rule.
Estimate the monthly transfer before changing settings
For continuous 24/7 operation, a useful decimal estimate is GB per 30-day month ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324. This is arithmetic based on bits-to-bytes, not a VPS provider’s published measurement.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Constant stream bitrate | Approx. transfer per day | Approx. transfer per 30-day month |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 10.8 GB | 324 GB |
| 2 Mbps | 21.6 GB | 648 GB |
| 4 Mbps | 43.2 GB | 1,296 GB |
These estimates exclude unrelated traffic and may differ from provider accounting. Add headroom for overhead and reconnections, then compare the estimate with the VPS plan’s included transfer and overage policy.
Which stream settings reduce bandwidth?
Lower video bitrate first
Reduce the encoded video bitrate in measured steps, then inspect the actual live image. Lower bitrate means fewer bytes, but it can make fine details harder to read. For a study stream, check small text, clock digits, and any motion in the scene rather than judging only a still frame.

OBS notes that a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate can cause dropped frames, and lowering bitrate can reduce video quality. Its troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for troubleshooting; treat that as general advice, not a VPS sizing guarantee. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.
Consider resolution and frame rate
Lower resolution or frame rate can reduce the bitrate needed to maintain a clear stream, but the right setting depends on what viewers need to see. A static or slowly changing study scene may not need as much temporal detail as fast-moving footage, but there is no universal study-stream optimum. Test for legibility and smoothness at the actual destination.

YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance recommends these H.264 bitrates: 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not mandatory minimums for every study stream. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings. Twitch’s guidance also notes that higher resolution requires higher bitrate and higher frame rate requires more encoding power; consult its broadcasting guidelines if Twitch is your destination.
Check codec compatibility before switching
Google for Developers says HEVC generally provides 25% to 50% more data compression at the same video quality than H.264 in its HLS ingestion documentation. That is not a guaranteed saving for every scene or encoder. The documentation concerns HLS ingestion: confirm that your destination, ingest protocol, encoder, and playback workflow support the codec before changing it. See YouTube HLS ingestion.

Count audio as part of the total
Audio adds to the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio in its encoder guidance. Twitch recommends AAC-LC audio at 96 Kbps for maximum compatibility. If the study stream does not need audio, assess whether the track is necessary; if it does, use a setting supported by your destination. Neither figure is a universal best setting for every platform or stream.
Keep the rate stable and use the right ingest settings
YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS live encoding, and Twitch also recommends CBR. A lower target does not by itself guarantee a stable connection: monitor stream health and dropped frames on the VPS-to-ingest route. Follow the current instructions for your destination and protocol.

A practical bandwidth-reduction workflow
- Record the baseline. Note the current video and audio bitrates, resolution, frame rate, codec, observed transfer, encoder load, and stream-health status.
- Estimate transfer. Multiply the constant stream bitrate in Mbps by 324 for an approximate 30-day total in GB. Include other VPS traffic and allow for metering differences.
- Change one setting at a time. Start by lowering video bitrate. If text or details become hard to read, restore it or test a different resolution or frame rate. Change codec only after checking compatibility.
- Run a representative test. Include typical movement and scene changes, and monitor both encoder load and the platform’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream.
- Compare outcomes. Check legibility, motion, dropped frames or reconnections, CPU use, and observed outbound transfer. Revert a change if it makes the stream unstable or the image difficult to use.
- Verify plan terms. Confirm your VPS allowance, traffic measurement method, and any overage or throttling policy directly with the provider.
What viewers see is not the same as VPS upload bitrate
The bitrate configured on the VPS is the feed sent to the platform; it does not automatically define the playback options viewers can select. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. OBS explains that Twitch transcoding is tiered and availability-dependent. Check what the destination actually offers rather than promising viewers alternate qualities. See OBS’s explanation of transcoding.
Common problems and fixes
- Monthly transfer is higher than the estimate: The estimate assumes a constant stream and excludes overhead and unrelated traffic. Check provider metering, reconnects, and other outbound services running on the VPS.
- Text or clock digits look blurred: The reduced bitrate may be too low for the selected resolution and scene. Raise it or test a lower resolution while checking whether the details remain readable.
- Dropped frames or interruptions appear: The VPS route may not sustain the configured bitrate, or the encoder may be struggling. Check platform health and encoder load, then lower the bitrate or adjust settings one at a time.
- A codec change fails or viewers cannot play the stream: The ingest protocol, encoder, destination, or playback workflow may not support the selected codec. Verify compatibility and return to a supported configuration if needed.
- Viewers cannot choose another quality: Viewer-side transcoding availability varies by platform and account. Confirm the destination’s current behavior; it is separate from the bitrate sent by your VPS.
Or let it run in the cloud
