In OBS, make a study scene and a separate break scene, then add a timer as a text or browser source (or use a video that already contains a countdown). Switch scenes with a hotkey or Studio Mode. YouTube Live Control Room also offers a temporary Take a Break slate, but its countdown does not end the break automatically. These tools build the visuals and scene changes; they do not guarantee that a computer, network, or channel will stay live uninterrupted for 24/7.
Build a study scene and a break scene in OBS
- Create the scenes. In OBS, add one scene for the study presentation and another for the break screen. A scene is a layout made from sources; the OBS overview uses names such as Welcome, Desktop, Game, Break, and End as examples. See the OBS scenes and sources overview.
- Add the background and timer. Use an image, media, text, or browser source for the visuals. For the countdown, add a text source, a browser source that displays a timer, or a video asset with the countdown already included. OBS’s source guide describes these source types but does not provide a built-in countdown-timer procedure. See OBS’s source guide.
- Arrange the layers. In the Sources list, items higher in the list appear above items below them. Put the timer above the background, use the eye icon to show or hide a source, and position or resize it with the preview’s transform controls.
- Set up the break visual. Add the break artwork or slate to the break scene. If you want a repeating local video, open its Media Source settings and enable Loop. OBS lists MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among supported video formats, as well as common audio formats. For a playlist of files, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist; VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Choose how to switch scenes. OBS has Fade and Cut transitions available by default. Set a transition and duration, then switch scenes with a hotkey or Studio Mode. Studio Mode lets you prepare the next scene in the edit area before transitioning it to the live output. See the OBS scenes and sources overview.
Test the timer, scene switch, and audio while watching the live output—not just the preview. If the break visual contains audio, check its routing and levels against the study scene.
Use YouTube Live Control Room’s Take a Break slate
YouTube Live Control Room has a Take a Break feature with temporary 1-, 3-, or 5-minute away-slate options. The countdown reaching zero does not end the break; you must end it in Live Control Room. YouTube states, “The break does not automatically end when the countdown reaches 0.” See YouTube Help’s Monetize your live stream page.
Add YouTube’s break overlay through OBS
- In Live Control Room settings, copy the break overlay URL.
- In OBS, add a Browser Source and paste the URL.
- Set the browser source dimensions to match your stream resolution and enable Shutdown source when not visible.
- Test the overlay before going live, as YouTube recommends.
The overlay does not mute other stream audio. Mute the microphone separately when stepping away. If you use a custom video slate with sound, check the audio routing so it does not conflict with other audio.

Keep expectations realistic for a 24/7 stream
A timer, looping file, and scene-switching workflow can create a study-and-break presentation, but they do not establish uninterrupted unattended operation. OBS and YouTube’s setup guidance does not guarantee uptime for a particular computer, network, or channel. If you use a local OBS setup, plan for the computer and connection to remain available and for someone or a configured workflow to handle breaks and failures.
