To keep a YouTube stream live after shutting down your PC, the encoder sending the stream must keep running somewhere else. Move the video playback and encoding to a cloud streaming service, or leave a separate computer or encoder on; switching off the only device producing and uploading the feed will interrupt the stream.
Choose where the stream will run
For a prerecorded documentary or playlist that should run continuously, a cloud service designed for YouTube looping avoids keeping a home PC on. YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists cloud-based services for continuous streaming, but YouTube notes that listed encoders are third-party products, not YouTube services. Check each provider’s workflow, terms, current availability in India, and operating limits before relying on it.

The right choice depends on whether your source is prerecorded or a live production, how much automation and recovery you need, and the cost and monitoring burden you can accept. A cloud host removes dependence on your PC; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
Set up a cloud stream for YouTube
- Confirm livestream eligibility. Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or choose the stream you will use. Copy its stream URL and stream key into the hosted encoder or service. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Configure the source in the host. For prerecorded programming, upload or select the video or playlist using the provider’s workflow. For a live event, confirm the service supports receiving your production feed. Do not assume every 24/7 service supports both types of source.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that YouTube Live Control Room receives the feed before relying on it. Test representative movement and audio, and check stream health and audio/video quality as recommended in YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Set output to suit the source and service. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported, documents H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 encoder options, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Set a bitrate appropriate to the output and the service’s limits, then test it; YouTube transcodes incoming streams into playback formats for viewers. - Decide who will watch for failures. Establish whether the provider automatically restarts a dropped stream, how you will see an alert, and who can intervene after the PC is off. Test recovery before depending on it for a long broadcast.
What to know about long broadcasts and archives
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Restream’s current help guidance likewise says YouTube archives only streams under 12 hours, and notes that Restream’s own server may be restarted during continuous streams longer than 24 hours. These are separate considerations: YouTube’s archive behavior does not tell you whether a hosting provider will restart or remain available. Check the chosen provider’s current long-stream and recovery documentation before planning an uninterrupted broadcast.

YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance, previewing the feed, monitoring stream health, and testing failover for professional events. For a documentary channel, verify that playback resumes as intended after a source ends or a connection drops, and do not assume an archive will preserve a broadcast longer than YouTube’s stated threshold.
Rights and monetization matter for looped video
Only stream recordings for which your channel has the necessary rights. YouTube’s live-stream terms say providers represent that they have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content and must comply with applicable laws and rules; live content must also comply with YouTube Community Guidelines.

Looping existing footage does not itself guarantee monetization. In a July 10, 2025 policy response, TeamYouTube clarified that mass-produced or repetitive material is included in the inauthentic-content policy and is ineligible for monetization. Review YouTube’s current monetization policies for your channel and content rather than treating continuous airtime as a route to revenue.
