Yes—provided the Pi 5 can sustain playback at your chosen quality and the connection at its actual location is stable. Start at 720p or 1080p, preferably over Ethernet, and test the exact stream for the length of time you need. YouTube’s speed figures are useful starting points, not guarantees against buffering, and there is no cited India-wide test proving that every Pi 5 and broadband connection will run uninterrupted all day.
What “continuous YouTube stream” means
A single long video, a playlist that advances automatically, and an always-on live channel are different use cases. Ordinary playback on a Pi 5 is feasible, but the available official guidance does not certify a 24/7 kiosk setup, automatic playlist continuation, or uninterrupted all-day operation. Live programming can also be affected by network congestion.
If you need unattended playback, test the specific channel or playlist, browser, connection and intended duration. Treat the result as a test of your setup, not a guarantee for other locations or future network conditions.
Internet speed to aim for
YouTube’s approximate recommended sustained speeds per stream are useful thresholds. They are not requirements for an Indian ISP plan, nor do they guarantee smooth playback if the connection fluctuates or is shared.

| Playback quality | Approximate sustained speed recommended by YouTube |
|---|---|
| 360p | 0.7 Mbps |
| 480p | 1.1 Mbps |
| 720p HD | 2.5 Mbps |
| 1080p HD | 5 Mbps |
| 4K UHD | 20 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations current when accessed on October 3, 2026. Allow headroom for other people and devices using the household connection. A speed test at the Pi’s location and real playback at the target quality tell you more than the maximum speed advertised for a broadband plan. YouTube notes that congestion and other factors can affect live programming and delay a stream; its troubleshooting guidance also suggests trying a wired connection when helpful. What the Pi 5 can—and cannot—decode
The Pi 5 has a 2.4 GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, a VideoCore VII GPU, dual-band Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet. Raspberry Pi specifies 5V/5A USB-C power; operation in 5V/3A mode limits the current available to peripherals. Raspberry Pi 5 specifications

Codec choice matters as much as resolution. Raspberry Pi documents hardware decoding for 4Kp60 HEVC, while other codecs run in software. Its processor documentation estimates H.264 decoding at roughly 10–20% CPU for 1080p24 and 50–60% for 1080p60. Those are codec-decoding estimates, not benchmarks of YouTube in a particular browser. You should not assume that every YouTube 4K stream will use the Pi 5’s HEVC hardware decoder. Raspberry Pi processor documentation
For a straightforward first attempt, use Raspberry Pi OS, keep the system and browser current, close unnecessary tabs, and begin at 720p or 1080p. The Raspberry Pi setup guide identifies Chromium and Firefox as browser choices. Raspberry Pi setup documentation

Set up and test playback
- Prepare the desktop setup. Install current Raspberry Pi OS on suitable boot media and connect the power supply and display. Raspberry Pi’s setup guide describes the required boot media, power and I/O peripherals; choose Chromium or Firefox as your browser.
- Update the system and browser. Use the operating system’s available update process before testing. Restart the browser if an update requires it.
- Connect the Pi to the network. Use Gigabit Ethernet if available. If using Wi-Fi, place the Pi where coverage is reliable and reduce obstructions or nearby interference.
- Play the exact intended stream at 720p. Watch for buffering, dropped frames, browser instability, heat and power interruptions during a meaningful trial.
- Try 1080p, then higher quality only if stable. Compare observed playback with YouTube’s approximate sustained-speed guidance: 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD.
- Test unattended operation for the duration you actually need. A short successful playback session does not establish all-day reliability. The cited official documentation does not provide a duration-tested Pi 5 browser benchmark.
If playback buffers or drops frames
- Lower the playback quality. If lower resolution helps, the issue may involve available sustained bandwidth or local decoding and browser load.
- Close other tabs and restart or update the browser. This can reduce local workload and address problems caused by outdated software.
- Try Ethernet or another connection. A wired connection can help distinguish Wi-Fi interference from other causes; another connection can help identify a network-specific problem.
- Reduce Wi-Fi interference and check household traffic. Router placement, obstacles, other users and time-of-day congestion can affect actual playback even when the plan’s advertised speed is high.
- Check power and setup stability. Use an appropriate power supply and check for interruptions. Raspberry Pi documents 5V/5A USB-C power and notes that 5V/3A mode limits peripheral current.
These checks reflect YouTube’s troubleshooting advice to adjust quality, update software, try another connection and reduce interference. The underlying cause may be network conditions or local browser and decoding load, so change one factor at a time where practical. YouTube troubleshooting for video playback
