You can avoid running a home computer around the clock, but a live camera stream still needs electricity at the camera, encoder, and internet equipment. For a live feed, that power must come from an off-grid source such as solar panels and batteries. For prerecorded video, a cloud streaming service can handle playback away from home, reducing local power use without powering any camera or router at the site.
First decide what you are streaming
The right approach depends on whether your documentary channel needs to show something live or can loop recordings.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. OneStream Live also describes a prerecorded 24/7 feature in its help center; its help article says the feature requires an Enterprise plan, so verify the current terms directly with the provider before relying on that detail. These services are for prerecorded material, not a substitute for electricity at a remote camera.
For a live feed, size an off-grid power system from the actual load
Do not choose a solar panel or battery based on a generic “24/7 stream” estimate. Power needs depend on the actual equipment, operating conditions, location, and how long the stream must last when solar input is low. The U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program advises: “The first step in selecting or designing a PV system is to determine the load’s daily energy requirement.” Its photovoltaic planning guide recommends determining device wattage and operating hours, then calculating and totaling daily watt-hours.

1. Inventory and measure every device
List the camera, computer or encoder, router, modem or cellular equipment, and accessories that must stay on. Record each device’s actual power draw if you can measure it; nameplate wattage is a starting point, not necessarily its steady operating consumption. Draw can change with encoding workload, display state, cellular signal, and other conditions.
2. Calculate daily energy use
For each device, multiply watts by hours of operation per day to get watt-hours per day. A device drawing a steady 20 watts for 24 hours would use 480 watt-hours per day; use measured draw for your own equipment rather than treating that example as a typical stream load. Add the devices together. Include the router and modem, and account for an inverter if your equipment needs AC power.

3. Choose storage for the hours without generation
Decide how long the system must run with little or no solar input: overnight, through a cloudy interval, or longer. Battery energy capacity determines how much energy can be stored, but usable capacity may be less than the headline capacity. Choose storage against the load and required autonomy, not just the battery’s advertised number. Where suitable, equipment that can use the battery system’s native DC output can avoid conversion steps; losses vary by setup and are not quantified here.
4. Size generation for the site and season
Solar panels generate energy; batteries store it for later. Panel capacity and battery capacity solve different problems. Solar production varies with time of day, weather, season, shading, dust, haze, rain, snow, and dirt, so plan for the least favorable season relevant to the site rather than assuming a sunny-day yield. There is no defensible universal panel or battery size for a YouTube stream. A sound equipment recommendation requires your measured load, location and seasonal sun conditions, connection type, desired cloudy-weather autonomy, and tolerance for interruption. A solar generator or power station paired with compatible panels may be a practical category to investigate, but capacity and compatibility must follow those inputs.
Set up YouTube and protect continuity
YouTube’s live streaming tips state that a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to livestream. YouTube describes mobile, webcam, and encoder routes. For an encoder, follow its current encoder instructions to connect with the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it unnecessarily. YouTube advises monitoring stream quality, which matters even when the power system is designed for unattended operation.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single stream lasting 24 hours or more will produce one continuous archive or preserve the same watch page. Confirm the restart and archive behavior for your specific setup before promising viewers a continuous recording. For an unattended off-grid installation, also plan how you will detect loss of power or internet and how you will respond; the cited guidance does not prescribe a particular monitoring product.

- The stream stops overnight. The battery may not provide enough usable energy for the actual load and required no-sun hours. Recheck measured watt-hours, storage usable capacity, and autonomy assumptions.
- The battery does not recharge enough. Panel production may be below the load because of season, weather, shading, dirt, or system configuration. Review the site and season assumptions and check that the panels and charge controller are compatible with the storage system.
- YouTube shows no incoming feed. Check that the encoder is running, the internet connection is available, and the current stream URL and key are entered correctly. If the key may have been exposed, replace it through YouTube’s current live controls and update the encoder.
- The stream is live but unstable. Follow YouTube’s stream-quality monitoring guidance and check the connection as well as the encoder and power supply. A power system alone cannot fix unreliable internet service.
- The archive is shorter or different from expected. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours; confirm the archive and restart workflow rather than assuming one 24/7 broadcast creates one complete video.
- The cloud service cannot show the scene you need. Cloud looping services handle prerecorded uploads, not a live camera feed. A camera at the location still needs local power and a working connection.

Can I run a live camera stream using only solar power?
Yes, if the off-grid system supplies the camera, encoder, and network equipment for the required operating time. The system must be sized for the measured load and local solar conditions.
Will cloud streaming keep my home router or a remote camera powered?
