Yes, but only if the laptop stays awake, powered, and connected with its encoder running. Closing the lid often puts a laptop to sleep, which stops the stream. Windows lets you configure the lid action; on a Mac, ordinary lid closure causes sleep, so a closed-display setup must meet Apple’s requirements. Test your exact laptop and setup before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
What has to keep working
A laptop can send a YouTube stream using encoder software, but that does not establish that any particular model can sustain the workload for 24 hours. With the lid closed, the computer must remain awake, powered, and connected; the encoder and network connection must keep operating as well. The Windows or macOS lid setting addresses only sleep behavior, not streaming endurance or connection reliability.
Configure the lid behavior
Windows
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does.
- Under Plugged in, select an action that does not suspend the computer, if that option is available.
- Connect the laptop to reliable AC power, then test that closing the lid does not interrupt the encoder. Device settings and available choices can vary.
Mac
Assume that closing a Mac laptop’s display puts it to sleep unless you are using an Apple-supported closed-display arrangement. Apple’s guidance for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with M3 specifies an external display, external keyboard and mouse or trackpad, and power. The cited macOS requirements are Sonoma 14.3 or later for MacBook Air and 14.6 or later for MacBook Pro. Other Mac models may have different conditions; check the instructions for your model before attempting a lid-closed stream.
Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the encoder
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Initial activation for live streaming can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you plan to broadcast. YouTube supports computer-based streams using encoder software; follow its setup instructions for your encoder and stream key, and do not share the key with anyone.

Test the stream before relying on it
- Start an unlisted or otherwise suitable test stream using the intended laptop, encoder, lid position, power source, and network.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health information, and monitor audio and video during operation. YouTube recommends testing and continued monitoring.
- Test upload capacity under the conditions in which you intend to stream. YouTube’s encoder settings table lists H.264 at 1080p/30 fps as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Those are encoder recommendations, not a promise that the connection will remain stable; requirements vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Leave the setup running long enough to expose interruptions that a brief start-up check may miss. Confirm that the laptop stays awake and that the encoder remains connected after the lid is closed.
Plan for archives separately
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise that a 24-hour stream will be archived as one recording. If you need a complete copy, arrange a separate local recording or consider shorter stream sessions, and verify YouTube’s current archive behavior before broadcast.
Choose a setup based on what you are streaming
For a camera-based or otherwise real-time production, a computer encoder must remain active and connected. For prerecorded content, YouTube’s encoder list describes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos; that listing does not establish its price, reliability, terms, or suitability for a real-time camera stream.

Compare options by whether the content is live or prerecorded, whether a closed laptop stays awake, whether upload capacity can sustain the desired quality, whether you need a complete local archive, and how you will monitor and recover from interruptions. Troubleshooting
The stream stops when you close the lid
The laptop may be sleeping, or the encoder may have lost its connection. Recheck the plugged-in lid action on Windows or the supported closed-display arrangement on Mac, then repeat a test with the lid closed.
YouTube shows an unstable or unhealthy stream
Check the encoder’s configured bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test sustained upload capacity and inspect the preview and stream-health information rather than relying on a speed test alone.

The channel cannot go live
Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If live streaming was only just enabled, activation may take up to 24 hours.
You do not get a complete 24-hour archive
YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours; it does not assure an archive of a 24-hour stream. Use a separate recording or shorter sessions if retaining the full feed is essential.
