Choppy streaming has four common forms, and each points to a different fix:
- Repeated pauses or buffering: the video cannot receive data consistently enough.
- Jerky motion while playback continues: the device, browser, graphics system, or display is dropping frames.
- Blurry or constantly changing quality: adaptive streaming is reducing resolution because available bandwidth is unstable or insufficient.
- Green screens, flickering, black frames, or glitches: suspect graphics acceleration, drivers, DRM, HDMI, or another part of the display chain.
Start by identifying which symptom you have. Then test another video, service, device, and connection before buying a faster internet plan or new hardware.
Start with a two-minute diagnosis
- Play another video on the same service.
- Try a different streaming service.
- Lower the quality temporarily to 480p, 720p, or 1080p.
- Try another device, if available.
- Test Ethernet or move closer to the Wi-Fi router.
- Restart the app or browser and the playback device.
| What you observe | Most likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| Every service buffers on every device | Network, router, modem, or ISP |
| Playback is smooth over Ethernet but not Wi-Fi | Wireless coverage, interference, or router capacity |
| Only one computer stutters | Browser, extensions, GPU, drivers, heat, or device performance |
| Only one app or service fails | App data, DRM, service delivery, or a title-specific problem |
| Only an external TV or monitor has glitches | HDMI, adapter, receiver, HDCP, HDR, or refresh rate |
| Only 4K or 60-fps video is affected | Bandwidth stability or decoding/rendering capacity |
If only one video is affected, the source file, live broadcast, or service-side delivery may be responsible. If every service fails on one device, concentrate on that device rather than immediately changing your internet plan.
Fix buffering and repeated pauses
Lower quality as a diagnostic test
Set the player to 480p or 720p, or change 4K to 1080p. If playback immediately becomes smooth, either the connection cannot sustain the selected quality or the device cannot decode and render it reliably. Lowering quality is useful evidence and a temporary workaround, not proof that the underlying fault is fixed.

As approximate service guidance, YouTube lists sustained speeds of about 0.7 Mbps for 360p, 1.1 Mbps for 480p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD (YouTube guidance). Netflix recommends at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K (Netflix guidance). These are service-specific recommendations, not guarantees. Wi-Fi conditions, congestion, simultaneous users, video complexity, and overhead can require more capacity.
Measure the connection while playback is failing
Run Fast.com while the problem is occurring, then repeat the test near the streaming device. Test once with other household devices idle and, if possible, once through Ethernet. Compare results at different times of day. Netflix specifically recommends Fast.com because it measures the connection to Netflix’s service (Netflix connection troubleshooting).
A single fast speed test does not prove that streaming delivery is healthy. The test may use a different server and route, while streaming can still be affected by packet loss, wireless interference, latency variation, upload saturation, bufferbloat, ISP congestion, or a service-side routing problem. A fast result makes insufficient raw bandwidth less likely; it does not rule out network problems.
Stop competing traffic
For five minutes, pause cloud backups, game downloads, operating-system updates, torrents, large transfers, video calls, security-camera uploads, VPN traffic, and other high-resolution streams. Then replay the same video.
If the video becomes smooth, the connection may need traffic management, lower simultaneous quality, wired connections, or better local coverage. The result does not automatically mean you need a faster ISP plan.
Restart the network correctly
- Stop playback and restart the streaming device.
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait about one minute.
- Reconnect the modem and wait for it to finish connecting.
- Reconnect the router.
- Restart the playback device and test again.
This is a restart, not a factory reset. A factory reset erases Wi-Fi names and passwords, parental controls, port forwarding, and other configuration, so it should not be an early troubleshooting step. Google also recommends a roughly one-minute modem/router power cycle when connection problems may be affecting video (Chrome video troubleshooting).

Improve Wi-Fi or test Ethernet
- Place the router in an open, elevated location, not inside a cabinet or behind the television.
- Move the streaming device closer to the router.
- Use 5 GHz or 6 GHz when the device is relatively close and coverage is reliable.
- Use 2.4 GHz when distance and wall penetration matter more than peak speed.
- Temporarily disconnect unused devices.
- Test Ethernet if the TV, computer, console, or streaming box supports it.
Ethernet removes the local wireless link from the test, but it cannot repair an ISP outage or an overloaded streaming service. If Ethernet is smooth and Wi-Fi is not, investigate router placement, interference, mesh-node positioning, wireless capacity, and the device’s Wi-Fi adapter. If both connections are choppy, investigate the ISP, modem, service, or playback device.
Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy and test again. It may add latency, reduce throughput, use a congested server, or change the route to a streaming service. Treat this as a diagnostic test rather than a recommendation to permanently remove privacy or security tools.
Fix stuttering and dropped frames on a computer
Use YouTube’s Stats for nerds
On YouTube, open the player’s settings menu and enable Stats for nerds when available. It shows information such as current resolution, connection speed, buffer health, codec, and dropped frames (YouTube’s documentation).
- Dropped frames rise while buffer health remains healthy: suspect the browser, GPU, driver, decoder, or rendering pipeline.
- Buffer health repeatedly collapses: suspect throughput, Wi-Fi, congestion, or interruptions.
- Resolution repeatedly falls: adaptive quality is responding to changing conditions.
- Only one codec behaves badly: hardware-decoding or driver compatibility may be involved, but confirm by testing another browser or device.
High-frame-rate video is a useful comparison. A 1080p60 or 4K60 video demands more decoding and rendering than ordinary 1080p30. YouTube documents lower-resolution playback as a way to force a lower frame rate (YouTube high-frame-rate playback).
Test another browser and disable extensions
Update Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari, relaunch it, and reload the video. Then test a private or incognito window. Google provides Chrome’s update controls through the browser menu and Help > About Google Chrome (Chrome troubleshooting).

Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy filters, video-enhancement tools, download managers, VPN extensions, screen recorders, and accessibility overlays. If playback improves, re-enable extensions one at a time until the conflict is identified. Do not install unofficial “quality unlocker” extensions or codec packs; they may be unsupported, create privacy risks, or interfere with protected playback.

Toggle hardware acceleration as an A/B test
Hardware acceleration normally lets the browser use the GPU for video decoding and rendering, reducing CPU work. A browser-GPU-driver conflict can instead cause stuttering, flickering, green video, or crashes.
In Chrome, open chrome://settings/system, find Use graphics acceleration when available, toggle it, choose Relaunch, and test the same video. If disabling it fixes the problem, the graphics path is implicated. If playback worsens, turn it back on. Disabling acceleration can increase CPU use and make high-resolution playback less efficient, so it is not a universal fix. Google documents hardware-acceleration and graphics-driver troubleshooting for YouTube (Google support).
Update the graphics driver and operating system
Use Windows Update, macOS Software Update, the computer manufacturer’s support page, or the official Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA support site. Avoid generic driver-download websites. Google specifically recommends obtaining PC graphics-driver updates from the computer manufacturer and notes that macOS updates include applicable graphics-driver updates.

While the video plays, check CPU, GPU, video-decoder activity, available memory, temperature, fan activity, and battery or power-saving mode.
- CPU near maximum with little GPU video-decoding activity can indicate software decoding or failed hardware decoding.
- A saturated GPU or video-decoder engine may require lower resolution or frame rate and fewer GPU-heavy applications.
- High temperatures can cause clock-speed throttling. Improve ventilation, use a hard surface, and test while plugged in.
- Total CPU usage can look normal while one core, the compositor, or the rendering pipeline is overloaded.
Do not begin with registry edits, BIOS changes, unofficial codec packs, or random browser flags. They can create new problems without identifying the cause.
Fix phones, tablets, smart TVs, and streaming sticks
- Update the streaming app and device software.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Restart the device.
- Test another video and another service.
- Try another network, such as a trusted phone hotspot, only as a diagnostic.
- Clear the app cache where the platform provides that option.
- Sign out and back in if the problem appears account-specific.
- Reinstall the app if its local data may be corrupted.
Check whether the device is hot, operating in a power-saving mode, short on storage, or too old to decode the selected format efficiently. An up-to-date internet connection does not guarantee smooth 4K, HDR, or 60-fps playback on an older smart-TV processor or low-power mobile device.

Mobile hotspots and satellite connections can have variable latency, congestion, data limits, or unstable throughput. Public, hotel, school, and workplace Wi-Fi may authenticate, throttle, block, or restrict video services. Netflix advises checking whether video services are restricted on public networks (Netflix troubleshooting).

Fix TV, HDMI, receiver, and soundbar problems
If glitches, flickering, green screens, black frames, or quality failures occur only on an external display, isolate the display chain:
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI, USB-C, Thunderbolt, or DisplayPort cable.
- Try another HDMI port.
- Test another supported cable.
- Temporarily remove an adapter, receiver, splitter, or capture device.
- Connect the streaming device directly to the TV.
- Try the TV’s built-in app or another input.
Confirm that the TV, streaming device, receiver, adapter, and cable support the selected resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode, and copy-protection requirements. Netflix notes that every device in a 4K/HDR chain may need to support the required standards (Netflix quality settings). Its troubleshooting guidance also identifies device and video-cable problems as possible causes of distorted, glitchy, skipping, or stuttering playback (Netflix playback troubleshooting).
Check refresh rate and frame-rate behavior
Judder can look like streaming stutter even when data delivery is fine. Film content may use 24 frames per second, ordinary video may use 30, and sports or live streams may use 50 or 60. Use the streaming device’s automatic display mode where available. Test the TV’s match frame rate or equivalent option, and try motion smoothing or frame interpolation off.
Motion smoothing is not a guaranteed cure. It can introduce artifacts and a soap-opera effect. Menu labels vary by television, operating system, and firmware, so use these as general settings categories rather than universal paths.

Service-specific checks
YouTube
YouTube recommends changing the internet connection and replaying the video when buffering or loading problems occur (YouTube troubleshooting). Use Stats for nerds to distinguish a collapsing buffer from rising dropped frames, then compare ordinary-frame-rate and high-frame-rate videos.
Netflix
In Netflix’s browser-based Playback Settings, profiles may use Auto, Low, Medium, or High. Netflix generally describes Auto as appropriate, while forcing higher quality can cause buffering if the connection cannot sustain it (Netflix Playback Settings).
A lower maximum resolution is not automatically a playback failure. Plan, title, browser, device, DRM, display, and hardware-chain limitations can affect available quality. Fast internet alone does not guarantee 4K.
DRM-protected services
If ordinary YouTube works but Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, or another protected service fails, suspect app/browser compatibility, DRM, or protected-display software. Update the browser and operating system, use a supported app or browser, and test without screen-recording or virtual-display software. On Firefox, DRM-controlled services may require enabled DRM playback and the Widevine component (Mozilla’s audio and video troubleshooting). Do not disable DRM.
Live streams
Live video generally has less opportunity to build a large buffer than on-demand video, so brief interruptions can be more noticeable. Compare the live stream with an on-demand video from the same service. If only one live event is affected, the broadcast or service delivery may be responsible.
When to contact the ISP or streaming service
Contact the ISP when all services buffer across multiple devices, Ethernet does not improve playback, restarts and traffic reduction have failed, and connection tests show poor or unstable performance. Provide:
- Which devices are affected
- Wi-Fi versus Ethernet results
- Time of day and duration
- Speed-test results
- Whether all services or only one service fails
- Whether other household traffic changes the behavior
Contact the streaming service when only that service or one title is affected, especially if other services work on the same device and network. Include the title, app or browser, device model, time of failure, error code, and any available Stats for nerds information.
Recommended Free Tools
Congestion can occur anywhere between a streaming service and your screen, so a service-specific problem does not necessarily mean your Wi-Fi is defective (Netflix on streaming quality).
Quick Recap
Fixes to avoid
- Factory-resetting the router immediately: it erases configuration and may not address the cause.
- Buying a faster router before testing Ethernet: a new router cannot fix an ISP outage, GPU problem, bad HDMI cable, or service-side issue.
- Permanently disabling hardware acceleration: it may fix one driver conflict but worsen high-resolution playback.
- Installing unofficial codec packs or optimizer software: these can create security, compatibility, or stability problems.
- Editing registry settings or experimental browser flags: menu paths and flags change, and unsupported changes complicate diagnosis.
- Assuming one speed test proves everything: real-time delivery can fail despite a good average result.
