Start by testing Amazon Music in Edge, Chrome, or Firefox. If the web player works while the Windows app fails, the problem is usually local app data, installation, Windows integration, or audio configuration. If the web player and another device fail too, investigate the account, network, catalog, or Amazon service first.
Do not follow old instructions that install Amazon Music through the Amazon Appstore. Microsoft says Windows Subsystem for Android and Amazon Appstore stopped being available in the Microsoft Store on March 5, 2025. The current Windows route is the official desktop or Microsoft Store listing, where available: Amazon Music in Microsoft Store.
Identify what is actually broken

Use a browser and another device as controls
- Open the Amazon Music web player in a modern browser. Amazon documents computer access and compatibility with Edge, Chrome and Firefox: Amazon web-player accessibility.
- Play a different song, album or podcast.
- Try the same account on a phone or tablet.
- Test a different network, such as a phone hotspot.
- Check whether Amazon.com and other streaming services load normally.
- If the web player and mobile app also fail, suspect the account, network, catalog or Amazon service.
- If the web player works on this PC, prioritize the Windows app and its local data.
- If only one track fails on multiple devices, suspect licensing, metadata or catalog availability.
- If streaming works but downloads do not, check storage, permissions and the difference between purchased files and subscription downloads.
Quick fixes that preserve app data
Close the process completely
- Close the Amazon Music window.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Amazon Music or related Amazon Music processes and choose End task.
- Reopen the app once. Repeated launches are unlikely to repair a broken state.
Restart Windows
Use Start > Power > Restart. Microsoft lists a restart as a first-line remedy for application and installation problems: Microsoft installation and removal troubleshooting.
Check sound before changing the app
- Select the speaker icon on the taskbar and choose the intended speakers, headphones or Bluetooth device.
- Open Volume mixer and confirm Amazon Music is not muted or routed elsewhere.
- Test another application and reconnect Bluetooth devices if necessary.
Temporarily test without VPN or proxy
Disconnect a VPN or proxy for a controlled test. If security software is suspected, follow its vendor’s temporary exception procedure and restore protection immediately; never leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled.

Update Windows, Microsoft Store and Amazon Music
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates and restart if prompted.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates and let Amazon Music and Store components update.
Microsoft recommends updating Windows and Microsoft Store when a Store app will not install, launch or behave correctly: Microsoft Store app troubleshooting. Labels can vary slightly between Windows 11 builds.
Repair, then reset, the Windows app
Repair without deleting data
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Amazon Music, select its three-dot menu and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, reopen the app and test playback.
Repair attempts to correct the installation without removing app data. Some traditional desktop installations do not expose these controls.
Reset when Repair fails
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Amazon Music > Advanced options.
- Select Reset.
- Launch the app, sign in again and allow the library to resynchronize.
Reset may remove cached settings and local offline content, so downloads may need to be made again. It does not cancel a subscription or erase cloud purchases. Microsoft’s recovery guidance is at Microsoft installation and removal troubleshooting.
Sign out and rebuild Amazon Music’s local data
Refresh the account session
- Use the account or profile menu to sign out.
- Close Amazon Music completely.
- Reopen it and sign in with the account that owns the subscription or purchases.
- Wait for the library to repopulate.
Amazon specifically recommends signing out and back in to refresh app data. Verify the exact Amazon email, marketplace and country: a household or different retail account can appear empty.

Rename the Data folder first
Amazon documents this Windows location: %userprofile%AppDataLocalAmazon MusicData. Its cache instructions are here: Amazon cache instructions.
- Close Amazon Music.
- Press Windows + R.
- Paste
%userprofile%AppDataLocalAmazon MusicDataand press Enter. - Rename the
Datafolder toData.old. - Reopen Amazon Music, sign in and let it rebuild its data.
Renaming rather than deleting gives you a recovery path. If the new session works, remove the old folder later. If not, close the app and restore the original name. This can clear stale sessions, loading loops, search failures, incorrect artwork and cache-related playback errors, but it cannot fix an account suspension, catalog restriction, service outage or faulty audio hardware.
Fix playback, output and HD/Ultra HD problems
When the timer moves but there is no sound
- Confirm the output device and Amazon Music volume in Volume mixer.
- Test another application to separate a system-wide audio fault from Amazon Music.
- Reconnect Bluetooth headphones and check their selected Windows output.
- Temporarily disable audio enhancements or exclusive control if they conflict with other applications.
Understand Exclusive Mode
Amazon documents Exclusive Mode in its Windows and Mac app. It can give Amazon Music exclusive control of an output device, preventing other applications from playing while music is active: Amazon Music FAQs. It may suit dedicated listening, but disable it when you need calls, games or system sounds simultaneously.
Separate ordinary playback from high-resolution output
Amazon says Windows HD and Ultra HD output depends on the computer’s audio hardware, DAC, driver, Windows sample-rate and bit-depth settings, track availability and connection. Wireless headphones may compress audio. An HD badge therefore does not guarantee the highest output format. Test standard-quality playback first; changing sample rate may make a path compatible without improving audible quality.

When songs skip or say “Unable to play”
- Check whether every track fails or only one.
- Compare the same song in the web player.
- Test another network and disconnect VPN or proxy.
- Check audio output and Exclusive Mode.
- Repair, reset or rebuild the Data folder.
If one track fails on several devices, treat it as a catalog or authorization issue rather than a Windows-only fault.
Fix login, library and purchased-music problems
Find purchased music in the right place
In the PC/Mac app, use Library > Music > Songs or Albums > Purchased. Amazon’s instructions are at Finding purchased music. Sign out and back in, then allow synchronization before assuming items are gone.
Purchased files are different from subscription downloads
Amazon documents computer downloads for purchased music through the PC/Mac app and browser: PC/Mac purchased downloads and browser purchased downloads. Purchased tracks can also be imported into Windows Media Player: Amazon’s Windows Media Player instructions.
Prime and Amazon Music Unlimited catalog titles are not ordinary downloadable computer files. They can be stored for offline playback inside the Amazon Music app, subject to the plan and platform restrictions. Do not promise MP3 export or Windows Media Player playback for subscription downloads.

Verify account and marketplace details
- Confirm the Amazon email address currently signed in.
- Check the country or marketplace associated with the account.
- Confirm an active subscription if the title is subscription-only.
- Determine whether the item was purchased or merely included in a catalog.
- Check availability or explicit-content settings that could hide an item.
Reinstall Amazon Music safely
- Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Amazon Music’s three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store, use Library or search for Amazon Music, and install the official listing if it is available in your region.
For a traditional desktop installation, uninstall through Windows Settings and reinstall only from an official Amazon or Microsoft source. Uninstalling can remove local cache and offline content; cloud purchases remain tied to the Amazon account. Do not use third-party mirrors, cracked clients, registry cleaners, driver-updater utilities or DRM-removal tools.
Installation, region and device edge cases
If the app cannot be installed
- Confirm Microsoft Store itself opens and the Store account is signed in.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Check whether the listing is available in your country.
- Check organizational policies on a work or school PC.
- On Windows on Arm, verify the current Store or Amazon listing rather than assuming native or x64 support; Microsoft notes that some apps may require provider installation or may not be compatible: Windows Help & Support.

Black or blank window
Test the web player, sign out if possible, rename the Data folder, update Windows and graphics drivers, test without VPN or proxy, then repair or reinstall. Several unrelated causes can produce the same display symptom.
App opens and immediately closes
Restart Windows, update Windows and Store components, use Repair, Reset, the Data-folder rebuild and finally reinstall. If other Store apps also close, troubleshoot Windows Store infrastructure rather than Amazon Music alone.

Use the web player when the app remains unreliable
The web player is the safest immediate fallback when installation is unavailable, the app repeatedly crashes, the Store listing is unavailable in your region, or browser playback works while the desktop app does not. Open music.amazon.com in a supported modern browser. It may not provide every desktop behavior, including local downloads, notifications, system-tray controls or device integration.
When to contact Amazon or Microsoft
Contact Amazon for account, subscription, catalog, authorization and service issues through Amazon customer service. Contact Microsoft when Microsoft Store, Windows Update or Windows app recovery itself is failing. Before contacting either, record the exact error text, Windows build, app installation type, app version shown on your device, account marketplace, network type and steps that reproduce the fault.

Is Amazon Music still available as a Windows 11 app?
Amazon Music remains represented in Amazon’s PC/Mac help material and has a U.S. Microsoft Store listing, but availability and controls can vary by region, account and device.
Can I install Amazon Music through the Amazon Appstore?
