Hulu lets eligible subscribers download selected shows and movies in the Hulu mobile app and watch them without an internet connection. Downloads depend on your subscription, the title’s licensing, the device and app version, and your location. The official feature is not a way to create ordinary video files for a computer or USB drive.
This guide applies to Hulu’s U.S. service. Hulu says its catalog, features and compatible devices can change; check the current Hulu download help page and the options shown in your app.
What you need before downloading
- An active, eligible Hulu subscription. Hulu has historically tied downloads to ad-free offerings, but current plan eligibility should be confirmed in your account and the current app. A bundle does not automatically make every included service or title downloadable in Hulu.
- A supported mobile device. Downloads are generally a mobile-app function on supported iPhone, iPad or Android devices. Hulu’s broad streaming-device list includes browsers, computers, televisions, consoles and streaming players, but streaming support does not establish download support. See Hulu’s general device information at Hulu.com/live-tv.
- The latest Hulu app. Update it through your device’s official app store.
- Free storage. Downloads remain inside Hulu’s app-managed storage and can consume substantial space. Leave room for app updates and temporary files.
- An internet connection. Use reliable Wi-Fi for the download. You should also connect before a trip so Hulu can perform any account or license checks required for playback.
How to find a downloadable Hulu title
Search for a specific show or movie
- Open the Hulu app and sign in.
- Tap Search and enter the title.
- Open the title’s details page.
- Look for the down-arrow Download icon. Hulu’s launch documentation describes that icon as the indicator of an eligible title: Hulu’s official download announcement.
If the icon is absent, that title is not currently downloadable for that account and device. It may still be available for streaming.
Browse downloadable content
Open Hulu’s Downloads area and look for a downloadable-content collection. Hulu originally used the label “See What’s Downloadable,” but menu names can differ by app version, operating system and account. Treat the icon on the individual title page as the decisive check.

How to download a Hulu show or movie
- Connect to Wi-Fi when possible.
- Open an eligible title in the Hulu app.
- Tap the Download icon.
- For a series, choose the episode or episodes that Hulu offers for download. A whole season is not necessarily available as one download action.
- Keep the app open long enough for the transfer to finish, or allow your device to complete it in the background.
- Open Downloads and confirm that the title appears there before leaving your connection.
Hulu does not save a normal MP4 in your Files folder. The download is encrypted and controlled by the Hulu app, so playback remains subject to Hulu’s subscription, licensing and authorization rules.
How to watch Hulu downloads offline
- While online, open Hulu and sign in on the device you will use.
- Tap Downloads.
- Select the downloaded movie or episode and start playback once.
- Test it by turning on Airplane Mode or disabling both Wi-Fi and cellular data.
Do this test before boarding a flight or entering an area without service. A completed download is not a guarantee of permanent access: Hulu may require periodic validation, and a title can leave the service or become unavailable under your plan.
How to delete downloads and reclaim storage
- Open Hulu’s Downloads screen.
- Use the item’s available Edit, Manage or delete control (the wording varies by app version).
- Remove watched episodes and movies individually, or use a multiple-selection control if your app provides one.
Because Hulu’s indexed help page does not expose every current iOS and Android button label, follow the controls shown on your device. Deleting a download does not cancel your subscription; it only removes the local copy.

Why the Download button is missing

Hulu says catalog and compatible-device availability can change; its current service information is at Hulu’s TV-network hub and Hulu Live TV information.
Download limits and expiration: current versus historical information
Hulu currently confirms the general feature—downloads of select titles on a supported device—but the public pages linked above do not establish a universal 2026 number for download count, device count or expiration.
Hulu’s October 7, 2019 launch announcement reported historical limits of up to 25 downloaded titles across five devices, 30 days to begin watching, and two days to finish after playback started. It also said expired items could be renewed online if the title remained available. Those figures appear in the 2019 announcement and its official PDF; they are historical, not confirmed current limits. Use the limits and dates displayed by your current app or Hulu Help Center.

Hulu downloads versus Hulu + Live TV DVR

A title in My Stuff or a watchlist is only a shortcut to streaming. It is not an offline copy. DVR recordings are also a separate feature and are not automatically downloadable mobile files.
Fix downloads that fail or stall
- Confirm that Wi-Fi is stable and that the device is not switching repeatedly between networks.
- Check available storage and remove unnecessary downloads.
- Update Hulu from the official app store.
- Force-close Hulu and reopen it.
- Sign out, sign back in and verify that the subscription is active.
- Restart the device.
- Delete the partial download and try again.
- Test a different title.
- If every eligible title fails, contact Hulu through its support topic selector at Hulu support.
One-title failures usually point to licensing or title-specific availability. Failures affecting every title are more consistent with storage, network, app, device or account problems. Hulu’s downloads and account troubleshooting categories are also linked from Hulu Help.

Can you download Hulu to a computer or save it as an MP4?
Hulu’s supported route is the app’s internal download feature, not a browser download to a laptop, external drive or USB stick. The resulting data is protected and app-controlled rather than a transferable video file. Do not rely on browser extensions, screen-recording utilities or DRM-removal “Hulu downloaders”: they may violate Hulu’s terms, fail against protected playback, expose account credentials or create security and legal risks.

Travel and international viewing
Download while you still have dependable internet, then test playback with connectivity disabled. Hulu’s public pages describe U.S.-specific service and note that location information can matter for content and mobile access. An offline download does not promise unrestricted playback worldwide, indefinite validity or access after a plan, account or licensing change.

Can I download Hulu with the ad-supported plan?
Do not assume eligibility from the plan name alone. Hulu has historically associated downloads with ad-free offerings, but check the current subscription details and whether the Download icon appears in your app.
Can I download every Hulu movie or show?

Do Hulu downloads use phone storage?
Yes. They occupy app-managed storage on the device, although they are not ordinary files you can move or play elsewhere.
Can I download a Hulu + Live TV recording?
DVR recordings and mobile downloads are separate features. A live-TV recording is not automatically an offline download.
Can I move Hulu downloads to an SD card?
Hulu’s official feature does not provide transferable video files. Follow the storage controls in the current app rather than trying to copy protected data.
Why did a downloaded title disappear?
