Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max 2nd Gen vs 1st Gen: What’s Different and Is It Worth Upgrading?

The 2nd Gen Fire TV Stick 4K Max adds 16 GB storage, Wi‑Fi 6E, newer processing hardware and Fire OS 8, but it is not a dramatic picture-quality upgrade. Find out who should upgrade and who should keep the 1st Gen.

Short answer: The 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K Max 2nd Gen is a meaningful refinement, not a dramatic picture-quality upgrade. Its 16 GB advertised storage, newer processor, Wi‑Fi 6E, Fire OS 8 and newer platform support make it worthwhile for heavy app users, sideloaders, cloud gamers and Wi‑Fi 6E households. If your 2021 1st Gen streams reliably, has free storage and uses a Wi‑Fi 5 or Wi‑Fi 6 router, keeping it is usually the better value.

Identify the two Max models correctly

This comparison is between the Fire TV Stick 4K Max 1st Gen (2021, build model AFTKA) and Fire TV Stick 4K Max 2nd Gen (2023, build model AFTKRT). They are different from the regular Fire TV Stick 4K, the 2025 Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and the 2025 Fire TV Stick 4K Select. Amazon’s device-identification reference lists the relevant build models at Amazon Developer.

Amazon’s complete specifications are available at Amazon Developer.

The five changes you will actually notice

1. Newer processing hardware

The 2nd Gen uses the MT8696T with Cortex-A55 cores rated up to 2.0 GHz, compared with the 1st Gen’s 1.8-GHz quad-core MT8696 platform. That should provide more headroom for menus, app launches, multitasking, games and demanding sideloaded software. It does not prove that every screen opens a specific percentage faster: Amazon’s specifications are hardware data, not controlled benchmark results.

Both models have 2 GB of RAM, so the upgrade is not a memory-capacity jump. A 1st Gen that is merely slowed by nearly full storage, bad power, overheating or a misbehaving app may improve after troubleshooting rather than replacement.

2. Double the advertised storage

The 2nd Gen advertises 16 GB internally versus 8 GB on the 1st Gen. The operating system and preinstalled software use part of either figure, but the extra headroom is valuable if you install many streaming services, games, Kodi or Plex clients, emulators, or sideloaded applications. It also reduces the need to remove apps when updates require temporary space.

For a household using only a few major services, 8 GB can remain adequate. Check the current free-space figure under Settings → My Fire TV → About → Storage (Amazon may rename or reposition this item as its interface changes), then remove unused apps and clear excessive cached data before treating storage as a hardware failure.

3. Wi‑Fi 6E adds the 6-GHz band

The 1st Gen supports Wi‑Fi 6 on 2.4 and 5 GHz. The 2nd Gen adds 6 GHz through Wi‑Fi 6E. Amazon describes the additional band as offering lower latency, faster speeds and less interference at Amazon News, but those are conditional benefits, not a guaranteed tripling of internet speed.

You need a Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7 router with its 6-GHz radio enabled, compatible regional channels and security settings, and a reasonably short, unobstructed path to the access point. Six gigahertz generally travels less effectively through walls than 5 GHz. In a stable, lightly loaded 5-GHz network, Netflix or Prime Video may look exactly the same.

4. Fire OS 8 provides a newer software foundation

The 2nd Gen runs Fire OS 8, based on Android 11/API level 30; the 1st Gen runs Fire OS 7, based on Android 9/API level 28. A newer base can help with future app compatibility, developer APIs, security maintenance and platform features. It is sensible to call this better longevity, not a guaranteed support end date or proof that every Fire OS 8 app is unavailable on Fire OS 7.

As of August 18, 2026, Amazon’s major Fire TV interface redesign was initially rolling out in the United States to the 2023 4K Max, 2025 4K Plus and Fire TV Omni Mini‑LED TV. The changes include more pinned-app positions, revised navigation and updated recommendations/live-content access. Amazon indicated expansion to additional countries and devices, so availability can vary by location, firmware and rollout stage. The 2nd Gen nevertheless has clearer current platform priority; the rollout does not establish permanent 2nd-Gen exclusivity. The rollout was reported by TechRadar.

5. Ambient Experience

Only the 2nd Gen includes Fire TV Ambient Experience. When the television is idle, it can display artwork, weather, calendars, reminders and other information; Amazon says the library includes more than 2,000 artworks (Amazon News). It is useful for a living-room or kitchen display, but it is not a picture-quality improvement and has no value if you always turn the television fully off.

What did not change

  • Both output up to 4K at 60 frames per second for supported codecs.
  • Both support HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision.
  • Both support Dolby Atmos, subject to compatible content, service plan, television and audio equipment.
  • Both decode HEVC/H.265, VP9 and AV1.
  • Both have 2 GB of RAM and the same stick-style installation.
  • Neither includes built-in Ethernet; Amazon lists 10/100-Mbps wired networking through an external adapter.

The 2nd Gen listing includes broader Dolby Vision profile support, including Profile 10, while the 1st Gen listing names Profiles 4, 5, 8 and 9. That is a technical compatibility distinction, not evidence that ordinary Dolby Vision titles will visibly look better.

Will the 2nd Gen produce better picture or sound?

Usually not in a dramatic way. The two generations share the important output formats, so the same Netflix, Prime Video or Disney+ title will normally use the same 4K, HDR and audio capabilities on both. Visible results depend more on the service tier, the title’s mastering, your television and HDMI input, network stability, picture settings and sound system.

The 2nd Gen cannot turn SDR into native Dolby Vision, make an incompatible television display true 4K HDR, or create Dolby Atmos from a source that does not contain it. Its faster hardware can make the interface feel better; it does not automatically make streaming video sharper.

Is Wi‑Fi 6E worth paying for?

Use this decision test:

  • You have a Wi‑Fi 6E/7 router and congestion or latency problems: the 2nd Gen may benefit from a cleaner 6-GHz path, especially for cloud gaming or a busy household.
  • You have only Wi‑Fi 5 or Wi‑Fi 6: the 2nd Gen will operate on the available bands, but its headline 6-GHz advantage is unused.
  • The stick is far from the router or behind several walls: 5 GHz may be more reliable than 6 GHz.
  • Your streaming already never buffers: changing to Wi‑Fi 6E is unlikely to improve resolution or sound.

If 6 GHz does not appear, confirm router support, enable the band, check regional channel and security compatibility, move the stick closer to the access point and verify the connected band in Fire TV’s network details. Do not judge the feature solely by your internet-plan speed.

Who should upgrade from the 1st Gen?

Upgrade when a specific limitation is costing you time

  • You regularly see low-storage warnings or uninstall apps to make room.
  • You run many apps, games, emulators, local-media clients or sideloaded software.
  • Menus and app launches are frustrating despite adequate power and a healthy network.
  • You own a Wi‑Fi 6E router and have wireless congestion or latency issues.
  • You want Ambient Experience or prefer the newer Fire OS foundation.
  • You use cloud gaming where lower latency and extra processing headroom are useful, subject to your network.
  • You can buy the 2nd Gen at a substantial discount.

Keep the 1st Gen when it already meets your use

  • Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube and similar apps run smoothly.
  • You have sufficient free storage.
  • Your router is Wi‑Fi 5 or Wi‑Fi 6 and wireless performance is stable.
  • Your main reason for considering an upgrade is better HDR, Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos.
  • You do not use Ambient Experience and the 2nd Gen costs close to a newer model.

Before buying in 2026

The 2nd Gen launched in the United States at $59.99. A July 2026 report recorded a temporary $35 US promotional price; that observed sale price is not a normal or guaranteed current price (Amazon News; What Hi‑Fi?). Check the current listing at Amazon before deciding.

Amazon’s catalogue also lists:

Model When it makes sense Important qualification
Fire TV Stick 4K Max 2nd Gen You want 16 GB, Wi‑Fi 6E, Ambient Experience and the highest Max-tier specification. It is a 2023 model; compare its live price with newer devices.
Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025) It is substantially cheaper and you do not need 6 GHz or 16 GB. Amazon lists Wi‑Fi 6, 8 GB, Fire OS 8, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos; independent performance superiority is not established. See Amazon’s listing.
Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) You want a lower-cost current Fire TV option. Verify the exact storage, OS, app compatibility and video-format specifications for your country before buying. See Amazon’s listing.

If wireless reliability is the actual problem, an external Amazon Ethernet Adapter may help; both Max generations remain limited to 10/100 Mbps Ethernet through an adapter, not built-in gigabit networking.

Final verdict by buyer type

  • Existing 1st Gen owner: keep it unless storage, responsiveness, Wi‑Fi congestion or a desired software feature is a real problem.
  • New buyer: choose the 2nd Gen when its price is close to the 1st Gen’s used/refurbished price and you value its extra storage or Wi‑Fi 6E.
  • Sideloaders and local-media users: the 16 GB model is the more comfortable choice.
  • Wi‑Fi 6E households and cloud gamers: the 2nd Gen is the more logical upgrade, provided the network can use 6 GHz.
  • Picture-quality shoppers: do not buy it expecting dramatically better 4K, HDR or Dolby Vision output.
  • Budget shoppers: compare the discounted 2nd Gen with the 2025 4K Plus; pay extra for the Max only when its storage, 6-GHz wireless or software priority matters.
