How to Download Free Music on iPhone to Listen Offline

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The legitimate free options are authorized audio files, music you already own, and apps that provide their own offline playback. Audiomack can cache eligible tracks inside its app, while Safari downloads and computer syncing can place authorized files on your iPhone. Apple Music requires a subscription for offline downloads, and Spotify Free does not download music for offline listening.

Choose the kind of “download” you need

“Download” can mean several different things on an iPhone. The distinction determines whether you get a transferable audio file or only temporary access inside an app.

Method Cost Offline playback Permanent, transferable files? Best for
Audiomack free tier No for eligible content; listing shows Free · In-App Purchases Yes, inside Audiomack No Discovery, mixtapes and independent releases
Authorized Safari download Free when the rights holder offers it Yes Usually, subject to the license Free releases and licensed libraries
Mac or Windows sync No extra service fee Yes Yes, when you own or are authorized to use the files An existing MP3/AAC collection
Apple Music Subscription Yes No; service-controlled downloads Large catalog and iPhone integration
Spotify Free No Not for music No Free streaming while online
Spotify Premium Subscription Yes No; service-controlled downloads Existing Spotify libraries and playlists

Use Audiomack for free, in-app offline listening

Audiomack’s US App Store listing advertises free streaming and offline downloads for eligible songs, albums, mixtapes and playlists: Audiomack on the App Store. Eligibility varies by track, artist, territory and licensing arrangement. Some content may be ad-supported or unavailable.

  1. Install Audiomack from the US App Store.
  2. Search for an artist, song, album or mixtape.
  3. Open the item and tap its download control.
  4. Open Audiomack’s downloaded or offline section to find it.
  5. Turn on Airplane Mode and play several tracks to verify the cache.

This creates app-managed offline access, not a normal MP3 in Files or a song that can be imported freely into Apple Music. Access can change after logout, licensing changes or account-related checks.

Download authorized music files with Safari

Use this method only when an artist, label, store or licensed library explicitly permits the download and your intended use. “Free” does not automatically mean copyright-free.

  1. Open the authorized source in Safari and tap its download link.
  2. Confirm the download if iOS asks.
  3. Open Files > Browse > Downloads.
  4. Tap the MP3, AAC, WAV or other supported audio file to play it.
  5. Use Move to place it in a folder such as On My iPhone > Music.
  6. For tagged libraries, playlists, gapless playback or background controls, import the file into a compatible dedicated audio-player app.

Files can store and play audio, but it is not a full replacement for a music-library app. A ZIP download must be unzipped first. If the file is missing, check On My iPhone, iCloud Drive, the Downloads folder and the Files search field.

Transfer music you already own from a Mac

This route is for files you own or are authorized to use. Apple identifies Music on macOS 10.15 or later, and iTunes on older systems, as transfer routes in its iPhone user guide. Apple periodically changes macOS controls, so labels can differ slightly.

  1. Add the local audio files to the Mac’s Music library.
  2. Connect the iPhone and unlock it.
  3. Open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar.
  4. Open the Music tab and choose the entire library or selected artists, albums, genres and playlists.
  5. Apply the sync and wait for it to finish.
  6. Open the Music app on the iPhone and test the transferred tracks.

Apple Music subscription tracks are not ordinary files that can be copied this way. Use Sync Library or download them directly in Apple Music instead. If manual-sync controls are absent, check whether Sync Library is enabled; cloud syncing and manual device syncing can conflict.

Transfer music from Windows with Apple Devices

Apple now separates its Windows apps: Apple Music manages the computer library, while Apple Devices manages iPhone syncing. Apple’s overview is at Apple Support’s Windows app guide.

  1. Install Apple Music and Apple Devices for Windows.
  2. Add your authorized local files to the Apple Music library.
  3. Connect the iPhone by USB. Wi-Fi syncing can be configured after an initial wired connection.
  4. Open Apple Devices and select the iPhone in the sidebar.
  5. Select Music and turn on Sync music onto [device name].
  6. Choose Entire music library or Selected artists, albums, genres, and playlists.
  7. Optionally select Include videos or Automatically fill free space with songs.
  8. Select Apply, wait for synchronization, then eject the iPhone before disconnecting.

Apple documents this sequence in Sync music to your device. If Apple Music Sync Library is active, subscription music is transferred automatically and cannot be manually synced through this method unless Sync Library is turned off. Turning it off can affect cloud-library access, so understand the consequences first.

Download for offline listening with Apple Music

Apple Music offline playback is a subscription feature, not permanently free music. On iPhone, enable Settings > Apps > Music > Sync Library, add a song, album or playlist in the Music app, then tap Download. Apple describes the process in its iPhone guide.

The downloaded items remain managed by Apple Music. They are not DRM-free files for manual transfer, and access depends on the subscription, account status, licensing and region. A trial or introductory offer is time-limited; current prices and eligibility change.

Why Spotify Free cannot download songs offline

Spotify’s current US offline-download information says music downloads require Premium; free users can download podcasts: Spotify offline downloads. Premium downloads are also app-controlled rather than exportable audio files. Spotify currently says you must connect at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active and lists up to 10,000 downloaded songs per device across up to five devices. These service limits can change.

Verify that music really works without data

  1. Download over Wi-Fi and leave the original files intact until testing is complete.
  2. Turn on Airplane Mode.
  3. Open the same app, folder or Music library used for the download.
  4. Play several tracks, not just one.
  5. Check album artwork, playlists and next-track behavior.
  6. Reconnect before travel if the service requires periodic account verification.
  7. Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage before downloading a large library.

Troubleshooting

The download button is missing

  • Add the item to the library first.
  • Confirm that your account tier supports music downloads.
  • Check regional availability and iPhone storage.
  • Try another authorized track, update the app and retry over Wi-Fi.

Music appears downloaded but will not play offline

  • Open the app that created the download; it may not appear in Files.
  • Reconnect to refresh account status and check that a subscription has not expired.
  • Delete and re-download the item if its cache is corrupted.

The iPhone does not appear in Apple Devices

  • Unlock the iPhone and accept the Trust prompt.
  • Try another USB cable or port.
  • Update Apple Devices, restart both devices and connect by cable before configuring Wi-Fi syncing.
  • Check whether Sync Library is controlling the music collection.

Synced songs disappear

  • Recheck selected artists, albums, genres and playlists.
  • Restore source files moved or deleted from the computer’s library.
  • Confirm that you are using the intended computer and library.
  • Apply the sync again and keep a backup of the originals.

What to avoid

Do not use YouTube-to-MP3 converters, stream-ripping sites, cracked apps or “free MP3 downloader” pages that do not identify the rights holder. They can violate platform terms or copyright law, deliver poor-quality files, expose you to malware and produce downloads you are not authorized to keep. The safe rule is simple: download only from a source that grants permission or offers a license covering your use.

Which option fits best?

  • Choose Audiomack if you want a phone-only, free, app-contained experience and accept catalog gaps, ads and app-specific downloads.
  • Choose Safari downloads if you need actual files and the rights holder clearly offers them.
  • Choose Mac or Windows syncing if you already have a legitimate local collection and want it in the iPhone Music app.
  • Choose Apple Music or Spotify Premium if catalog size, playlists and convenience matter more than permanent ownership and a subscription is acceptable.
