Apple’s F1 Rights Negotiations Led to a Five-Year U.S. Deal: What Fans Need to Know

Apple’s reported negotiations for Formula 1’s U.S. rights are no longer unresolved. Apple and Formula 1 announced on October 17, 2025, a five-year agreement beginning in 2026, making Apple TV the exclusive U.S. home for live Formula 1 coverage. The 2026 season began on March 7 with the Australian Grand Prix, and ESPN’s U.S. arrangement ended after the 2025 season.

What the original report said

The 2025 report described negotiations, not a completed contract. Apple was pursuing U.S. rights beginning with the 2026 season in talks involving Formula 1 and its commercial-rights holder, Liberty Media. ESPN’s exclusive negotiating period had reportedly expired, allowing Formula 1 to consider competing bids.

Reuters reporting reproduced by MarketScreener said Apple had bid at least $150 million per year. That was a reported offer, not a publicly confirmed final contract value. ESPN’s previous deal was reported at roughly $90 million annually, according to the Associated Press.

Read the reported bid details.

What Apple ultimately won

Apple became Formula 1’s exclusive U.S. broadcast partner for five years from 2026. The arrangement is limited to the United States; it does not transfer Formula 1’s worldwide rights or automatically change how fans watch in Canada or other countries.

Former U.S. broadcaster ESPN, through the end of the 2025 season

Apple and Formula 1 describe the deal in their official announcement and Formula 1’s corporate release. Bloomberg and ESPN also reported the completed agreement.

What “exclusive” means for U.S. viewers

For the full live championship, Apple TV is the relevant U.S. rights platform. Apple’s F1 viewing guide says subscribers receive:

  • Every practice session, qualifying session, Sprint session and Grand Prix.
  • Full replays and highlights.
  • English and Spanish commentary.
  • F1 TV and Sky Sports broadcasts where offered.
  • Onboard cameras, data feeds, driver tracking and podium feeds.
  • Multiview on compatible Apple devices.

Apple also says every practice session and selected race weekends can be watched without a subscription. That limited free access is not the same as access to the entire season. Check the schedule because which race weekends are free can change.

The service can be used through Apple devices, supported smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, eligible Android devices, Windows devices and the web. An Apple TV 4K box is optional, not a requirement. Apple’s complete coverage and device details are in the U.S. F1 viewing guide.

Price, trials and household value

Apple’s U.S. subscription page listed Apple TV at $12.99 per month, with a seven-day free trial for eligible new subscribers, when checked on August 18, 2026. Prices and promotional terms can change, so verify the amount at signup.

  • Existing Apple TV subscribers: F1 is an added benefit rather than a new monthly bill.
  • F1-only viewers: The recurring fee may be difficult to justify if you watch only a few races, particularly when those weekends are not among Apple’s free offerings.
  • Households: Family Sharing can extend the subscription to up to five additional family members.
  • Bundle users: Apple TV is included in Apple One. Apple also lists Apple TV and Peacock bundles, but those make sense only for households that use Peacock as well.

An Apple TV subscription is a service subscription, not a purchase of Apple TV hardware. The app and web player are sufficient on supported equipment.

F1 TV’s role after the ESPN transition

F1 TV has not disappeared from the U.S. experience. Apple says U.S. Apple TV subscribers receive F1 TV Premium at no additional cost after linking their Apple Account through F1’s designated linking process. That provides access to the F1 TV layer, including telemetry and supplemental feeds.

The distinction matters: F1 TV remains a product and content layer, while the U.S. live-rights package is tied to an Apple TV subscription. Do not assume that a standalone U.S. F1 TV subscription independently replaces Apple TV for live sessions. Apple’s current instructions are available in its F1 guide.

Why Apple wanted Formula 1

A premium live-sports strategy

Live sports can increase subscription sign-ups, viewing time and engagement. Formula 1 complements Apple’s existing sports relationships, including Major League Soccer and Major League Baseball offerings.

A broader Apple ecosystem

Formula 1 has pointed to promotion across Apple TV, Apple Sports, Apple News, Apple Music, Apple Maps and other services. Apple also connected the partnership to the audience interest surrounding F1 The Movie, extending an existing relationship with the sport.

The arrangement therefore offers more than a conventional television-rights placement: Apple can market races, schedules and related content across devices and services that it controls.

Why Formula 1 accepted—and what could go wrong

Revenue and U.S. growth

The reported Apple bid was substantially above the figure associated with ESPN’s prior agreement. A higher rights fee can improve Formula 1’s economics, while Apple’s technology and distribution may help the sport pursue its U.S. growth ambitions. The exact final fee, however, was not disclosed, so a five-year total based on the reported $150 million figure would be only a calculation, not a confirmed contract value.

Reach versus subscription economics

ESPN reached viewers through established pay-TV packages as well as its digital products. A streaming-exclusive home can create better subscriber data and interactive features, but it may reduce casual exposure among households that do not already pay for Apple TV. Axios reported that Formula 1 executives viewed the partnership positively while acknowledging that streaming could initially produce a smaller audience than cable.

Experience and access risks

Viewers will judge whether Apple’s interface makes live sessions easy to find, whether alternate feeds work reliably on their devices, and whether multiview and telemetry justify the added subscription friction. Apple confirms those features, but their usefulness depends on compatible hardware, software and personal viewing habits; they are not proof that every viewer will prefer the new experience.

Timeline from negotiation to launch

  1. Before 2025: ESPN held the U.S. relationship with Formula 1 from 2018.
  2. Early 2025: ESPN’s reported exclusive negotiating period expired.
  3. 2025: Apple was reported to be pursuing the rights with a bid of at least $150 million annually.
  4. October 17, 2025: Apple and Formula 1 announced the five-year U.S. agreement.
  5. March 7, 2026: Apple’s first F1 season began with the Australian Grand Prix.
  6. August 18, 2026: Apple TV was the active exclusive U.S. broadcaster for live F1 coverage.

What viewers can use instead

There is no competing full live-rights holder identified for the United States under the current arrangement. Practical options for someone who does not want the full subscription are narrower:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Apple’s free practice sessions and selected race weekends.
  • Apple TV replays and highlights.
  • F1 TV supplemental content, subject to current U.S. access rules.
  • Radio coverage, live timing, news and highlights.

ESPN should not be treated as a current U.S. live-race alternative. Its U.S. arrangement ended after 2025, although that does not mean ESPN has no relationship with Formula 1 in other markets or contexts.

How to decide whether Apple TV fits

  1. Choose Apple TV if you want every live practice, qualifying session, Sprint and Grand Prix in the United States.
  2. Check your television, console, streaming device or browser for Apple TV support before buying hardware.
  3. Compare the $12.99 monthly price with the number of races you actually watch and the value of replays, alternate feeds and F1 TV Premium.
  4. Check Apple’s free-access schedule if you follow only occasional events.
  5. If you are outside the United States, identify your local rights holder rather than assuming this deal applies.

The Bottom Line

The negotiation report was accurate at the time, but it has become a completed deal: Apple TV is now Formula 1’s exclusive U.S. platform for the full live championship. Fans gain broad session coverage, alternate feeds and F1 TV Premium access, while accepting a new subscription gate and potentially less casual reach than ESPN’s cable distribution.
