To restart an FFmpeg YouTube stream automatically after power returns, run the working FFmpeg command as a systemd service and enable that service at boot. Then test an actual reboot and confirm both that the service is running and that YouTube receives a healthy stream. Boot auto-start handles a Pi restart; it does not, by itself, recover every camera, network, credential, or YouTube broadcast failure.
What this setup does—and what it does not
A service enabled with systemd starts when Raspberry Pi OS boots, so a Pi that loses power and later restarts can launch the stream process again. A command run manually, or a service that is merely started once, is not enough: it must also be enabled for boot. A running FFmpeg process is not proof that YouTube is receiving video or that the broadcast is healthy.
The exact FFmpeg command depends on whether the input is a camera, a video file, or another feed, and on the Pi hardware and software in use. First confirm that the command works manually on the target Pi. Do not assume an older raspivid example applies to a current Raspberry Pi OS installation; check that its capture method matches your camera and installed software. A community-maintained Raspberry Pi 4 project demonstrates an FFmpeg and systemd-on-boot approach, but its implementation is specific to that project: project instructions.
Prepare the FFmpeg command and its dependencies
Make the manual command reliable first
Run the intended stream command under the same Pi user and with the same input, file paths, configuration, and environment that the service will use. Confirm that it can connect to YouTube and that the intended input actually produces video and audio. Record the executable path and working directory; services may not inherit the environment or current directory of an interactive terminal.

Plan access to the stream key
YouTube describes a stream key as functioning like the stream’s password and address: it identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Keep it out of public repositories, screenshots, and logs, and limit access to any file that contains it. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in YouTube’s Live Control Room and then update the encoder. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
Configure a systemd service
Create a unit for your own command
Create a service unit that runs FFmpeg directly where practical, or calls a maintained executable script. Set the service user, working directory, environment, and restart behavior deliberately. Use the actual command and paths that you tested; there is no universal unit or capture command for every Pi, camera, storage arrangement, and Raspberry Pi OS release.

Do not assume that ExecStart interprets shell syntax: a pipeline or other shell operator written there is not automatically run by a shell. If the command needs a pipeline, invoke a shell explicitly or put the logic in a script. Quote and escape paths and arguments appropriately for the chosen approach. These details must be validated on the target Pi.
Account for startup timing
After power restoration, the Pi may boot before Wi-Fi or Ethernet, a camera, or mounted storage is ready. Make the service’s dependencies and retry behavior fit the actual setup. Avoid an aggressive restart loop, and test whether the input and network are available when the service starts. The appropriate dependency and retry settings vary by installation; the cited project documents boot start and diagnostics, not a universal retry policy.

Enable the service and test it after reboot
- Install the unit: place your service file in the appropriate systemd service location and use the unit name you chose in subsequent commands.
- Reload systemd’s unit definitions: run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadafter adding or changing the file. - Enable boot start: run
sudo systemctl enable your-service-name. Replace the example name with your actual unit name. Enabling is what schedules the service to start on future boots. - Start it now: run
sudo systemctl start your-service-nameto test without waiting for a reboot. - Inspect service status: run
systemctl status your-service-name. This helps distinguish a service that did not launch from one that started but whose FFmpeg process failed. - Read its journal: run
journalctl -u your-service-nameto inspect service output and errors. Check the executable path, input device or file, permissions, environment/configuration, and network availability when FFmpeg exits or cannot open its input. - Reboot and verify again: after the immediate test, reboot the Pi and check status and logs again. The project’s documented installation pattern likewise reloads systemd, enables and starts the service, and uses status and journal checks.
- Confirm the YouTube side: check the Live Control Room for a received preview and acceptable stream health. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health during the event.
Set FFmpeg output to suit YouTube and your connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Choose output settings your encoding path can sustain, then test them on the actual Pi and connection; YouTube’s recommendations are ingestion guidance, not Pi performance benchmarks. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates.
| Output target | YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These bitrates and keyframe values are YouTube’s published recommendations; the cited page does not state a publication year. Match bitrate to the intended resolution and frame rate, and ensure the Pi’s encoder and upload connection can sustain the workload. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate and warns that network disruptions can break a stream. A nominally fast connection is not a guarantee of stable delivery.

Troubleshoot failures after power returns
- The service is not active after reboot: verify the unit name and that you ran
systemctl enable; inspectsystemctl status your-service-nameandjournalctl -u your-service-namefor unit-file or startup errors. - The service starts, then FFmpeg exits: check the FFmpeg executable path, command arguments, permissions, working directory, and environment. Re-run the command manually as the configured service user.
- The camera or input is unavailable at boot: check that the chosen capture software supports the installed OS and hardware, and that the input is ready when the service starts. Adjust dependencies or retry behavior for that setup, then test with a reboot.
- A file or configuration cannot be opened: verify its absolute path, that any required storage is mounted before the service runs, and that the service user can read it.
- FFmpeg runs but YouTube shows no preview or poor health: verify the destination and stream key, input video/audio, encoder settings, and network. Compare the selected bitrate with available upload capacity and retain YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- The stream key may have been exposed: reset it through the Live Control Room as an owner or manager, then update the Pi’s protected configuration.
- YouTube drops the broadcast while the Pi process remains up: a boot-enabled service only covers host startup. Inspect FFmpeg and YouTube status and configure recovery appropriate to the failure mode; the boot-start pattern alone does not establish automatic recovery for every YouTube-side interruption.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube loop rather than a Pi-based camera feed, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera. Every quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or plan details. Start the free day at StreamNeo signup.
