First make sure your channel is eligible for live streaming; then create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, connect it with the server URL and stream key, test the visuals and audio, and monitor stream health.
Choose how the rain video will play
You need a playback source and a way to send its output to YouTube Live. The two main approaches are a local encoder on your computer or cloud playout. YouTube describes an encoder as software or standalone hardware that converts video into a digital stream. Its encoder guidance lists OBS as free, open-source software, and names Gyre and Upstream as cloud options for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. Those listings do not establish current service terms, pricing, file limits, or availability, so check each provider directly before choosing.
| Approach | What it depends on | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Local encoder, such as OBS | Your computer, power, internet upload, and playback setup must remain available. You control the local composition, but you are responsible for maintaining it and recovering from interruptions. | Creators who want hands-on control over scenes and can keep the equipment and connection running. |
| Cloud playout | A service plays uploaded media remotely. Check its supported formats, limits, reliability information, price, account access, and support terms before committing. | Creators who do not want continuous playback to depend on a computer at home. |
Prepare the rain program and changing background
Plan the visuals and sound
Choose whether the background changes through cuts, fades, or timed scenes. A straightforward approach is to assemble the rain footage, background changes, and audio into one continuous rendered video. That keeps the sequence in a single source. If you want to change scenes within an encoder instead, confirm its current media-source and looping controls in that software’s official documentation; the exact current OBS controls are not established here.
Clear the rights for every element
Use rain footage, images, and audio that you have created or are licensed to transmit live and make available in a replay. Rain ambience and stock visuals are not automatically safe to use. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance says trailer audio and video must not infringe others’ content; consult YouTube’s current copyright guidance for the full rules. Consider rights for both the live feed and the resulting archive.

Check that your channel can go live
- Your channel must be verified.
- It must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- You must be at least 16 years old to live stream.
YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and activate live streaming before the day you plan to launch. YouTube’s getting-started guidance covers the requirements.
Create a YouTube Live encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create a live stream or schedule one. Enter the title, visibility, and other stream details that viewers will see.
- Choose the encoder workflow. In the Live Control Room, locate the server URL and stream key for the stream.
- In your encoder or cloud playout service, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then configure the output and select the rain program.
- Start the encoder output and wait for YouTube to receive it. Check the preview and stream health before making the stream public or starting the scheduled event.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains this connection flow. Keep the stream key private: YouTube says stream keys are like a stream’s “password and address.” If the key is exposed, reset it in the stream settings and update your encoder.

Set output quality and test before launch
Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain continuously. YouTube advises choosing settings that result in a reliable stream based on your internet connection. Run a speed test, then test the actual video and audio—not only a static screen—before going live. A moving rain scene and a background transition are useful checks for the program you intend to broadcast.
| YouTube encoder guidance | Recommended bitrate | Minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular home connection can sustain them. Use RTMPS, which YouTube recommends; configure constant bitrate (CBR); and set a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the current settings table.

Go live, monitor the feed, and handle interruptions
Before launch, confirm that the stream preview shows the intended background changes and that the rain audio is present at a sensible level. Once live, watch YouTube’s stream health indicators and warnings. With local playback, keep the computer, playback source, power, and network available; YouTube’s documentation does not establish automatic recovery for a particular encoder or local setup. For cloud services, check their own recovery behavior and support terms rather than assuming an interruption will be fixed automatically.
- No incoming video: Check that the encoder is sending to the correct server URL and that the stream key matches the stream you created.
- Unstable feed or warnings: Check upload capacity and encoder output settings. Lower the quality if your connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, then test again.
- Wrong scene or no background changes: Check the rendered file or the encoder’s media-source sequence and confirm it plays through the transition in a preflight test.
- No rain audio: Check the source file and encoder audio input or mix, then verify audio in YouTube’s preview before launch.
- Stream key exposed: Reset the key in YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in your encoder.
Choose viewer controls and plan the replay
YouTube’s DVR setting lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream. Scheduling can give viewers an upcoming watch page, and viewers may choose “Notify me.” Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, according to YouTube’s encoder setup documentation. If you need an archive, plan the broadcast duration around that limit and check YouTube Help for current guidance on longer streams.
