To put a title card between prerecorded videos in a YouTube Live feed, create the card as a video segment, make its video and audio streams compatible with the clips, then concatenate the segments and send the encoded output to YouTube. FFmpeg’s concat filter is the flexible choice when you need to generate or normalize media; the concat demuxer may avoid re-encoding when every segment—including a pre-rendered card—already has compatible streams. The command depends on your files and FFmpeg build, so treat the examples below as patterns and test them before going live.

Choose the right FFmpeg approach

Approach Best for Trade-off
Filtergraph with generated card Creating a timed text card inside FFmpeg, or converting clips to a common format before joining. Flexible duration and styling, but the assembled output must be encoded.
Image-backed card with filtergraph Using a designed still graphic as the card, with a generated background if needed. Requires turning the still into a timed video segment and matching its format and audio behavior to the clips.
Concat demuxer Joining compatible files when the card is already encoded to match the clips and you want to avoid re-encoding. It joins existing media; it does not create a compatible title card for you.

FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. The filter expects corresponding streams across segments, so plan to align dimensions, frame rate and time base, pixel format, and—if audio is included—channel layout and sample properties. Consult the FFmpeg filter documentation and concat FAQ for the current behavior and syntax.

Prepare the clips and card

Inspect your inputs first

Before building a filtergraph, check the video and audio streams in every clip: dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, duration, audio sample rate, and channel layout. Choose the output dimensions and frame rate you intend to send to YouTube, then convert inputs that do not match. Do not assume clips from different cameras, editors, or downloads will concatenate cleanly without normalization.

Generate text or use a designed image

For a simple title, FFmpeg can make a full-frame background with the color source and render words with drawtext. Confirm that your FFmpeg build includes the filter and FreeType support; run ffmpeg -filters and check for drawtext. Font selection and text shaping can depend on optional libraries and build configuration. For a branded graphic, use the still image as a timed video segment or place it over a generated background with the overlay filter. FFmpeg documents these filters in its filter manual.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set the card duration deliberately, use high-contrast text, and keep important lettering within safe margins. If your concatenation includes audio, provide a silent audio stream for a silent card; otherwise the filter inputs may not have matching stream topology. Check that the card’s video dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, and audio properties match the normalized clips.

Build and test the filtergraph

The following is a schematic, not a ready-to-run command: filenames, filter labels, text escaping, stream mapping, normalization filters, encoder settings, and card duration all need to match your media and FFmpeg build.

ffmpeg -i clip1.mp4 -i clip2.mp4 -filter_complex
  "[0:v]... [v0]; [0:a]... [a0];
   color=c=black:s=WIDTHxHEIGHT:r=FPS:d=CARD_SECONDS,drawtext=... [cardv];
   anullsrc=... [carda];
   [1:v]... [v1]; [1:a]... [a1];
   [v0][a0][cardv][carda][v1][a1]concat=n=3:v=1:a=1[outv][outa]"
  -map "[outv]" -map "[outa]" ... output

In this pattern, the first clip, card, and second clip each contribute video and audio to the concat filter. The ellipses stand for required filters and options, not literal FFmpeg syntax. Normalize each segment before concatenation, and create a silent audio source with the same sample rate and channel layout as the program audio if the card has no sound. If you do not need audio in the output, construct a consistent video-only graph instead.

  1. Render a short local output with your real clips and the intended card text or image.
  2. Play it through the transition into and out of the card. Check for black frames, frozen video, clipped or unreadable text, audio gaps, abrupt level changes, and audio/video sync problems.
  3. Verify that the output’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio format match the settings you will use for YouTube Live.

Use the concat demuxer only for matching files

If the clips and a pre-rendered card have compatible streams and parameters, the concat demuxer may join them without re-encoding. Make a text file in the desired order, for example:

file 'clip1.mp4'
file 'card.mp4'
file 'clip2.mp4'

Then use the concat demuxer with that list, adapting paths and options to your files:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -c copy joined.mp4

This copy-style approach is not a repair tool for mismatched dimensions, codecs, time bases, or audio streams. If the joined output has timestamp or playback problems, or if the card does not match the clips, normalize and re-encode with the concat filter instead. See FFmpeg’s concat guidance.

Send the assembled feed to YouTube Live

Choose encoder settings for the stream

YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; select the matching row on the current YouTube encoder settings page rather than treating one number as universal. For reference, that page lists H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. Those are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed results; the page may change.

Use a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably, with headroom for normal variation. The relevant upload capacity is the connection sending the feed—not the download speed advertised for the location where you watch it. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health during the event.

Connect with the stream URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the encoder connection. YouTube describes the key as both a password and an address for the connection: keep it out of public commands, recordings, and source repositories.
  3. Use the RTMPS URL displayed in Live Control Room when available; YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Do not substitute a guessed endpoint.
  4. Start FFmpeg with the assembled feed, selected output codec and bitrate, two-second keyframes, and the Live Control Room URL and key. Keep credentials out of shell history and shared logs where possible.
  5. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages before making the event public or sharing it. When finished, stop the encoder feed and use Live Control Room’s end-stream flow.

The exact final FFmpeg command depends on your input streams, chosen codec, encoder build, bitrate, and the URL and key YouTube provides. YouTube’s settings and workflow can change; consult its live encoder guidance and stream setup instructions when configuring a real event.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • drawtext is unavailable: Your FFmpeg build may lack the required FreeType support. Check ffmpeg -filters and the build configuration; use a build with the filter or create the card as an image outside FFmpeg.
  • Concat reports stream or parameter mismatches: Compare every segment’s video dimensions, frame rate/time base, and pixel format, plus audio sample rate and channel layout. Normalize them before connecting filter inputs, or render a matching card for a demuxer workflow.
  • The card has no audio stream and concat fails: If the graph includes audio for the clips, add silent audio with matching sample properties to the card segment. Alternatively, build a video-only concat graph when the output should have no audio.
  • Text is missing, garbled, or in the wrong font: Check filter availability, font path, escaping of punctuation and special characters, and optional text-shaping support in your build. Try a simple title first.
  • The demuxer output glitches or fails to play: The files may not be compatible for stream copy or may have timestamp differences. Re-encode through a normalized concat filtergraph.
  • YouTube shows a connection or health warning: Verify the exact URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the encoder settings and stream health, and check that the sending connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Test before the event rather than changing several settings during a live broadcast.
  • Music, footage, or images may be protected: A card does not change the rights status of the videos around it. Use material you have permission to stream and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules, including its reused-content policy, before relying on a continuous prerecorded feed.

For a practical preflight on rights, use the copyright safety checklist.
