Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →YouTube Studio creates and manages the live event, but it does not send a video file from your computer as the live feed. To play a prerecorded video as a live stream, connect encoder software to the event using its stream URL and stream key, send the video through the encoder, preview the incoming feed, then click Go live in Studio.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube also says creators must be at least 16 to live stream. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility guidance because requirements can change.
- Choose encoder software that can play a local media file and send its output to YouTube. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge, and its streaming tips say expensive equipment is not necessary. The right controls for loading and playing a file depend on the encoder you select.
- Have a reliable upload connection, the video file ready, and any required music and other content rights. A prerecorded video is still live content for policy and rights purposes.
Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
- To set up an event for later, open Manage → Schedule stream, then create a new stream or reuse prior settings.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. The URL is the server address; the key identifies your event to the encoder.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Studio before broadcasting.
Load the prerecorded video in your encoder
- In the encoder, enter the copied stream URL in the server or URL field and the stream key in the key field. The exact labels vary by software.
- Add the video file as the encoder’s video source. In OBS, for example, use a media-file source and choose the file; other encoders have their own file-playback controls.
- Check that the video is framed correctly and that its audio is audible. Configure playback behavior—such as whether it stops at the end or repeats—according to your intended event. Do not assume YouTube Studio controls file playback; that is handled by the encoder.
- Start streaming from the encoder. This sends the video feed to YouTube but does not necessarily make a scheduled event public immediately.
Set the encoder’s output format to one YouTube accepts for your stream. YouTube’s cited encoder workflow establishes the connection steps, but it does not prescribe one universal resolution, bitrate, or keyframe setting for every video and connection. Follow the current recommendations shown for your event and encoder, and test the chosen settings before a public broadcast.
Preview, go live, and end the stream
- In the event’s Live Control Room, wait for YouTube’s incoming preview. Confirm that both picture and sound are present and that the correct video is playing.
- For a scheduled stream, click Go live in Studio when you are ready to begin the event. Starting the encoder sends the feed; Studio’s Go live action starts the event for viewers.
- When finished, end the event in Studio and stop sending the feed from the encoder.
Give the stream a proper readiness check
- Plan ahead: YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before the stream and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Those intervals are preparation guidance, not a guarantee that a connection or event will work.
- Leave bandwidth headroom: YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. If the connection is shared or variable, test under realistic conditions and reduce output demands if the feed stutters.
- Check the actual preview: verify the video, audio, framing, and playback before going live rather than relying only on the encoder’s local view.
- Keep a backup: YouTube recommends a local recording or archive backup. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to YouTube’s current Help guidance, but a separate copy is useful if you need a dependable source file.
A trailer is not the prerecorded live feed
YouTube’s scheduled-stream trailer feature can play on the watch page before the event begins. It does not send the main prerecorded video as the live feed; the encoder workflow above is still required for that.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube says trailers are available to creators with more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. A trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes and should match the main video’s aspect ratio and resolution. These eligibility and format details may change, so check YouTube’s current scheduled-stream trailer guidance.
Rights, copyright, and YouTube policy
Confirm that you have the rights needed to stream the video worldwide, including the relevant music licensing rights. YouTube’s livestream terms require compliance with its Community Guidelines and applicable law. A prerecorded source does not exempt a stream from copyright or platform rules; a match to another copyrighted live broadcast or another policy issue can lead to restrictions. Review the YouTube livestream terms and YouTube copyright guidance before broadcasting.

Troubleshooting
- No incoming preview: check that the encoder is running, that the stream URL and key match the event, and that the key was not copied with extra characters. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- Preview appears, but Studio will not start the event: confirm that you are in the correct scheduled event and wait for the incoming feed to be detected. Use the Studio event’s Go live control when ready.
- Video plays locally but is absent or frozen in the preview: confirm the correct file is selected as the encoder source, restart playback, and inspect the encoder output and preview again.
- Audio is missing or too quiet: check the file’s audio track and the encoder’s audio source and meters, then listen to the incoming preview before going live.
- Feed stutters or drops: test the upload connection, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% bitrate headroom, and lower the encoder’s output bitrate if needed. Recheck the preview after each change.
- Stream ends unexpectedly: check the encoder and connection, then confirm the event status in Studio. If you resume, verify that the correct event and stream key are in use.
- Copyright or policy restriction: review the notice in Studio and resolve the rights or policy issue; changing the video source from live camera to prerecorded does not remove the requirement to have streaming rights.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
Nothing has to stay on at home; any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
