You can run a prerecorded playlist on a 24/7 YouTube live stream from a Google Compute Engine VM by running an encoder in the VM and sending its output to YouTube Live with your stream URL and stream key. The VM can host the media and encoder without relying on a home computer, but boot automation alone does not configure playlist looping, recover a dropped stream, or guarantee uninterrupted service. Treat this as a design pattern to implement and test—not a verified one-command setup.
How the setup fits together
The VM acts as the always-on host for your media and encoder. The encoder reads the playlist, produces a live video-and-audio output, and sends it to YouTube’s ingest service. In YouTube Live Control Room, you create or schedule the stream and copy its stream URL and key into the encoder. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; for this design, the encoder runs on the VM. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the stream URL and key workflow.
There are two separate jobs to solve: keep the encoder process running and make it play the playlist repeatedly. A Compute Engine startup script can automate software setup or launch a process when a VM boots, but it does not itself provide looping or robust reconnect logic. You must configure those behaviors in your encoder or a separate process manager and verify them under failure conditions. Prepare YouTube Live
Enable live streaming and create the event

Open YouTube Live Control Room and enable live streaming for the channel if it has not been enabled before. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete this ahead of the planned start.

Create or schedule a live stream. Set the title, description, visibility, and any other event details appropriate for the documentary playlist. Check the live settings in Control Room before starting the encoder; YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers the available controls.

Copy the stream URL and stream key from the event’s encoder setup. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a signal to your event. Do not put it in public scripts, logs, screenshots, or source repositories. Store it in a restricted configuration or secret-management mechanism available to the VM, and rotate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
Choose the media and encoder design
Place the licensed video files where the VM’s encoder can read them, whether on attached storage or another storage arrangement you have validated. Confirm that the files decode correctly and that the playlist order is intentional. Configure the encoder to repeat the playlist and to reconnect if the ingest connection drops. The reviewed official documentation establishes neither a particular encoder command nor a supported loop or recovery configuration, so validate the exact encoder, options, and process supervision you choose before relying on it.
Do not assume that a startup script is a complete service manager. Plan what should happen if the VM reboots, the encoder exits, the network connection fails, or YouTube rejects the incoming signal. Test boot behavior, restart behavior, logs, and recovery separately. A boot script can install or launch software at startup, but reliable repeated playback and reconnection require additional implementation.

Set video and audio output for YouTube
Use YouTube’s published encoder recommendations as the starting point, then select a resolution and bitrate that your VM can encode and sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution table gives the bitrate guidance by output format.

Protocol: Prefer RTMPS when configuring the encoder and ingest endpoint.

Video: Use H.264 and CBR. Choose resolution and bitrate from YouTube’s current table rather than assuming that a higher setting is automatically better.

Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.

Audio: Use AAC or MP3 and verify that the selected input tracks produce audible output.

Capacity: Measure or otherwise validate the VM’s available outbound bandwidth and leave headroom. The encoder must sustain the chosen output continuously, not merely during a short test.
Run a test with similar motion and audio to the actual playlist: a quiet static frame is not a good proxy for fast-moving footage or complex sound. YouTube recommends testing and watching stream-health messages while the encoder sends video. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Automate VM startup, then test the whole chain

Choose a Compute Engine region and VM configuration that can handle the selected encoder workload. There is no universally correct machine size: required CPU and memory depend on the media, output resolution, and whether the encoder must transcode.

Install the operating system packages and encoder you have selected, and make the playlist files accessible to the VM. Confirm disk capacity and permissions before automating anything.

Configure a startup script or other boot mechanism to prepare the environment and launch the encoder process. Keep credentials out of broadly readable files and prevent the key from being printed to startup logs.

Implement playlist repeat and process recovery as distinct, explicit behaviors. Review logs and test what occurs when the encoder is stopped, the VM is restarted, or connectivity is interrupted. Do not infer recovery from the fact that a startup script ran once.

Start the YouTube event and encoder, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Verify the public watch page from another device or browser, including mobile access, before treating the stream as operational.

If YouTube reports a problem, use the exact message to diagnose the encoder output, connection, or event configuration rather than repeatedly restarting without checking logs. YouTube’s live streaming error-message reference maps reported errors to possible causes.

Compute Engine cost cannot be estimated accurately without choosing a region, VM type, disk and other attached resources, external IP needs, and usage assumptions. VM compute, storage disks, and external IP resources can contribute to the bill; network transfer and other selected resources may also affect the final amount. Check the current Compute Engine pricing page for the actual configuration and consult the instance lifecycle documentation for how VM state affects resource use. A continuously running VM incurs costs while it is allocated and running; stop or delete resources you no longer need, while accounting for any retained storage or IP resources.
Broadcast continuity and YouTube’s archive behavior are separate concerns. YouTube’s documented statement is: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement does not establish that a single event running 12 hours or longer will be archived, nor does it validate a segmentation workaround. If an archived recording matters, plan around YouTube’s stated limit and confirm the current behavior in your channel’s Live Control Room before depending on it.
