In October 2024, a Reddit user gave Google NotebookLM a document made up largely of “poop” and “fart” repeated about 1,000 times. Its Audio Overview feature turned that near-empty source into a roughly 10-minute conversation about art, repetition, psychology and why people look for meaning. The result was real; the apparent profundity was generated interpretation, not a hidden message in the document.
What happened in the “poop” podcast experiment?
Ars Technica reported on October 1, 2024, that a Reddit user uploaded a document consisting of the words “poop” and “fart” repeated across multiple pages to Google NotebookLM. The Reddit post described the words as written 1,000 times; Ars characterized the resulting audio as roughly a 10-minute AI-generated podcast-like discussion. NotebookLM’s Audio Overview produced two synthetic hosts who treated the repetition as a subject for discussion. They moved from jokes into analogies involving Andy Warhol, minimalist music and Dadaism, then considered pattern recognition, the human impulse to impose order, and whether repetition can become meaningful through interpretation. The conversation also returned to the possibility that sometimes a poop is just a poop.
What Audio Overview does—and what it does not do
Audio Overview transforms supplied material into a conversational audio discussion rather than simply reading the document aloud. In this case, two AI-generated voices delivered scripted dialogue with conversational cues such as pauses, interruptions and verbal hesitation. A contemporaneous description by Simon Willison called the feature a one-off custom podcast in which two AI hosts conduct a “deep dive” into user-provided content: his September 2024 explanation.

Those voices were not human presenters, and the discussion was not an independent reporting or research process. The system generated a performance in response to the uploaded source. Because that source contained almost no conventional information or argument, there was little to summarize. Most of the episode’s substance came from associations and interpretation supplied by the model.
Why did the conversation sound profound?
Repetition gave the model a recognizable pattern but almost no evidence about the writer’s intent or the document’s meaning. It could frame repetition as an artistic device, connect it to familiar cultural references, or make the absence of content itself the topic. It could then extend those connections into questions about why people seek patterns and meaning.

That is interpretive expansion, not discovery. The AI did not uncover a coded philosophy in the repeated words. It produced plausible-sounding commentary around a thin prompt, drawing on cultural associations and familiar ways of talking about art and psychology. Ars Technica noted that some of the discussion resembled an undergraduate essay padded with impressive-sounding but weakly grounded analysis.
What is impressive—and what is misleading?
The experiment shows a real generative strength: the system sustained a conversational format, drew on recognizable concepts, and made two voices sound like participants in an engaging exchange. Its pauses, turn-taking and rhetorical questions helped turn a nearly content-free source into several minutes of listenable audio. That is a demonstration of improvisation and presentation, not proof of human-like understanding.

The same qualities can make the output seem more grounded than it is. Artistic references in the conversation were analogies, not evidence that the document belonged to an artistic movement or that its author intended a particular meaning. Ars also described a tangent about a shop with rubber ducks dressed as historical figures—a detail that did not meaningfully follow from the source. The anecdote illustrates how a system may wander while trying to keep a conversation moving.

- Source-grounded summary: a condensed account of information actually present in the document.
- Interpretation: a proposed way to understand material, which needs supporting evidence if it is presented as more than speculation.
- Creative generation: new analogies, examples or dialogue produced beyond what the source states.
- Factual hallucination: a false or unsupported factual claim presented as true.
The “poop” episode is best described as an AI-generated audio interpretation loosely prompted by a source—not a faithful summary, a scholarly analysis, or a researched report. Its elaborations were not necessarily false factual claims, but much of their interpretive weight was unsupported by the document. The natural voices and podcast conventions made that distinction easier to miss.

Dialogue supplies turn-taking, questions, reactions and apparent progression. Those cues make a generated script feel less like a block of text and more like an exchange between people with separate perspectives. But two voices do not establish two independent reasoning systems, genuine disagreement or spontaneous thought. They are presentation choices that can improve accessibility and engagement while also making speculation sound conversationally assured.

The listener contributes to the effect, too. When a polished exchange connects repetition to familiar ideas about art or psychology, people may complete the pattern and experience the result as insight. Axios placed the episode in NotebookLM’s viral moment and observed how convincing artificial imitations of human expression can be: its October 2024 report.
What the experiment says about AI-generated summaries
This is a useful stress test for source fidelity: when a document offers almost nothing to analyze, a model may fill the gap with associations rather than stop at “there is little here to summarize.” The result may be entertaining, but fluency alone cannot show whether an interpretation is supported. Nor does this single unusual example establish how every version of NotebookLM—or other summarizers—will handle ordinary documents.
The risk matters more with substantial material. A technical report, legal document or medical explanation may contain real claims and qualifications, yet an audio rendering can simplify details or add commentary in the same smooth voice. A polished discussion may conceal the difference between what the source says and what the model has supplied. The key question is not only whether the audio sounds coherent, but whether its claims can be traced back to the document.
How to use AI-generated document audio responsibly
- Use generated audio for orientation, review or accessibility—not as a replacement for the source when accuracy matters.
- Check the original document before relying on a claim, especially in legal, medical, scientific, financial or other high-stakes contexts.
- Separate statements supported by the document from analogies, examples and commentary added by the hosts.
- Verify historical, scientific and other factual references independently; a confident conversational delivery is not evidence.
- Be cautious with empty, repetitive, ambiguous or poorly extracted files, which give the system little to constrain its output.
- Consider privacy before uploading confidential material, and avoid relying on audio where exact wording or citations are essential.
The October 2024 episode was funny because the gap between its source and its serious-sounding conversation was so large. Its more durable lesson is that a familiar podcast format can make invented meaning sound like analysis. The model’s fluency is worth noticing—but the source remains the test of what the discussion actually supports.
